Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'This is my story; from the time when I was conscripted as a schoolboy into the army at age seventeen.' This story is fact and not fiction. It is not a historical account written in the first person, it is written as a novel giving insight into the small talk, the joys and the challenges of army life, culminating in the horror of war; what many conscripted young men of our generation faced at the time. The language is brutal and foul at times but it is within context. The story happens in 1975 starting with call-up, through basics and parabat training and culminating in Operation Savannah, a CIA backed operation into Angola which lasted for almost a year - the largest deployment of South African troops since the Second World War- where our soldiers fought Cuban forces sponsored by mother Russia. It speaks of Kevin's journey from boyhood to manhood, accelerated by the furnace of war; surviving two deadly ambushes, facing rocketed and shells; how he slips into a deep and black depression; somehow clawing his way back to mental stability. The betrayal by the apartheid government and how 'en messe', hundreds of men mocked and swore at the then minister of defence PW Botha. At the end it touches on how Kevin has to cope with PTSD; how he partially heals himself while living as a beachcomber for three months, until he feels he can cope with life and living with others. '...Kevin lay there, using his tongue to clear the mud out of his mouth, shovelling it out with his tongue. It was not a bad taste; it tasted like the earth should, like the taste of dirt eaten when he was a kid. He spat and spat again. He could hear others spitting as well; muddy fucking mouths everywhere, he thought. He realized then that he was rambling in his head; words and thoughts bouncing about in his head like a ping-pong ball as he spat the mud out of his mouth; his tongue curling about in his mouth, shovelling out the mud. He tasted blood. He might have bitten his tongue. He spat the pink mud out of his mouth and then began to retch, dry heaving, wanting to vomit but it wouldn't come. Pink fucking mud!...'"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, drugs and gardening. That's the spirit of Garden of My Ancestors, a story about a family farm set in the wild and misty reaches of Limpopo province. The farm belongs to an infamous family whose ancestors settled here more than a century ago. This is no tedious or anguished account of stoic, hard-nosed colonials, however. This is the tale of a wild and wonderful family, an African tale where white mischief meets magic realism. Set in an incredible garden against ancient mountains that change everyday, Garden of My Ancestors is sad, tragic, funny and philosophical - and an evocative testament to the healing powers of gardening.

Book excerpt: This book is a story of success, of the triumph of man over a wilderness; of the triumph of science over disease; of the conversion of a Valley of Death into a paradise. It tells of the shaping of one of the cornerstones of South Africa from a stone which the earlier builders not only rejected, but found an almost insurmountable obstacle. It tells of men and women of all races, principally Boer, Briton and Hollander, toiling against great odds, some for sheer love of adventure, some for wealth or personal advantage, some with a true desire for the common weal; of some who came and shortly went their ways elsewhere; of many who closed their lives here in a twilight of apparently hopeless failure; of some few who lived through the later stages of travail and of hardship to see at last, 'The stubborn thistle bursting into glossy purples, richer than the most voluptuous garden roses'. Each and all of these men and women of the past did their bit, great or small, consciously or unconsciously, with objects of self or of the common good, towards the shaping of the Stone, but the Great Architect could and did combine those individual efforts to the shaping of the things to come; none could foresee how great would be the eventual victory over the inimical forces of Nature, how great would be the use to which future generations would put the generous gifts of Nature in this Region of ours[: the Lowveld]. --H.S. Webb, first president of the Lowveld Regional Development Association, in his preface to The South-Eastern Transvaal Lowveld published in 1954.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. R. Hartley's best-known catch to date is the public imagination. Here are his elusive fishing recollections told in a series of sometimes vividly comic chronological cameos, ranging period and location from York school days in the early 1930s through memorable outings on stream, spate river and loch to startling conclusion half a lifetime later on a Scottish summer night. Complimented by his protege Patrick Benson's evocative illustrations and with his anglers expertise lightly threaded throughout, J. R.'s story will touch every fly fisherman's experience. But it is book too that will appeal to everyone even those who have never held a rod, for the engaging point that emerges of the ultimate reluctant hero.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Eglin was at the frontline of the making of South African history for the second half of the 20th Century. He served in parliament through the terms of seven successive prime ministers and presidents -- from JG Strijdom to Thabo Mbeki; and under five constitutions, from the Union constitution to the constitution of 1996. In the constitutional negotiations that followed Nelson Mandela's release from jail in February 1990, Mandela described Eglin as 'one of the architects of our democracy'. Eglin continued to make his impact in parliament over the first ten years of South Africa's transition to democracy. In this book, Colin Eglin recalls an active life well lived, from childhood in South Africa in the 1920s and 1930s to fighting his way through Italy in the Second World War, then to fighting his corner in parliament -- from which perspective he provides searching insights into South African politics and politicians -- during the most dramatic and traumatic half-century in the history of South Africa.

Book excerpt: Re-Viewing Resistance in Namibian History brings together the work of experienced academics and a new wave of young Namibian historians - architects of the past - who are working on a range of public history and heritage projects, from late nineteenth century resistance to the use of songs, from the role of gender in SWAPO's camps to memorialisation, and from international solidarity to aspects of the history of Kavango and Caprivi. In a culturally and politically diverse democracy such as Namibia, there are bound to be different perspectives on the past, and history will be as plural as the history-tellers. The chapters in this book reflect this diversity, and combine to create a remarkable collection of divergent voices, providing alternative perspectives on the past. Re-Viewing Resistance in Namibian History writes 'forgotten' people into history; provides a reading of the past that reflects the tensions and competing identities that pervaded 'the struggle'; and deals with 'heritage that hurts'.
