Book excerpt: Not for the love of women toil we, we of the craft, Not for the people's praise; Only because our goddess made us her own and laughed, Claiming us all our days, Claiming our best endeavourÑbody and heart and brain Given with no reserveÑ Niggard is she towards us, granting us little gain; Still, we are proud to serve. Not unto us is given choice of the tasks we try, Gathering grain or chaff; One of her favoured servants toils at an epic high, One, that a child may laugh. Yet if we serve her truly in our appointed place, Freely she doth accord Unto her faithful servants always this saving grace, Work is its own reward!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australian Story, Mungo MacCallum investigates the political success of Kevin Rudd. What does he know about Australia that his opponents don't? This is a characteristically barbed and perceptive look at the challenges facing the government and the country. MacCallum argues that the things we used to rely on are not there anymore. On the Right, the blind faith in markets has recently collapsed. The Left lost its guiding light with the demise of the socialist dream. In entertaining fashion, MacCallum dissects the myths that made Australia: the idea of the Lucky Country, with endless pastures, a workingman's paradise, a new Britannia, and more. In newly uncertain times, MacCallum argues, Rudd has sought to tap into these myths, in the process reclaiming them from John Howard. Australian Story is both a canny assessment of the Rudd government's election - winning approach and a broader meditation on the nation's core traditions at a time of major change and challenge. ''Rudd has made it clear that he is looking forward to a long time in office … If the polls are to be believed, he is still seen as the best man for the job by an overwhelming majority of Australians. But why? What is it about this repetitive, boring, God - bothering nerd that appeals to the proverbially laid - back, cynical, disengaged public?'' - Mungo MacCallum, Australian Story This special Christmas issue also includes Robert Manne's Quarterly Essay Lecture, Is Neo - Liberalism Finished?

Book excerpt: The Oxford Studies in Postcolonial Literatures series offers stimulating and accessible introductions to definitive topics and key genres and regions within the rapidly diversifying field of postcolonial literary studies in English. In a provocative contribution to the series, Graham Huggan presents fresh readings of an outstanding, sometimes deeply unsettling national literature whose writers and readers just as unmistakably belong to the wider world. Australian literature is not the unique province of Australian readers and critics; nor is its exclusive task to provide an internal commentary on changing national concerns. Huggan's book adopts a transnational approach, motivated by postcolonial interests, in which contemporary ideas taken from postcolonial criticism and critical race theory are productively combined and imaginatively transformed. Rejecting the fashionable view that Australia is not, and never will be, postcolonial, Huggan argues on the contrary that Australian literature, like other settler literatures, requires close attention to postcolonial methods and concerns. A postcolonial approach to Australian literature, he suggests, is more than just a case for a more inclusive nationalism; it also involves a general acknowledgement of the nation's changed relationship to an increasingly globalized world. As such, the book helps to deprovincialize Australian literary studies. Australian Literature also contributes to debates about the continuing history of racism in Australia-a history in which the nation's literature has played a constitutive role, as both product and producer of racial tensions and anxieties, nowhere more visible than in the discourse it has produced about race, both within and beyond the national context.

Book excerpt: To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Banjo Paterson, and the commemoration of the centenary of the First World War, NLA Publishing has produced this beautiful cloth-cover facsimile publication of Paterson’s poetry. These small-format books were originally published in 1914 as ‘pocket editions for the trenches’, designed for soldiers to slip into their back pockets and carry with them through their war days. Probably purchased by wives, girlfriends and mothers, they were a little piece of Australia to relish amongst the horrors of war. The 47 poems in the book include all the favourites: A Bush Christening, A Mountain Station, Black Swans, Clancy of the Overflow, Conroy’s Gap, In the Droving Days, Over the Range, Our New Horse, Saltbush Bill, The Man from Snowy River, and The Daylight is Dying. At the back of the book, there are two pages of information about Banjo Paterson and the 'trench pocket-books'. Norman Lindsay’s illustrations on the front and frontispiece depicting droving and a homestead must have had an emotional impact on the fighting men so far away. A great Father’s Day present or Christmas gift. Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson (17 February 1864 – 5 February 1941) was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author who achieved enduring fame with his ballads of bushmen, pioneers and workers.
