Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing Your Liverpool Ancestors' gives a fascinating insight into everyday life in the Liverpool area over the past four centuries. Aimed primarily at the family and social historian, Mike Royden's highly readable guide introduces readers to the wealth of material available on the citys history and its people. In a series of short, information-packed chapters he describes, in vivid detail, the rise of Liverpool through shipping, manufacturing and trade from the original fishing village to the cosmopolitan metropolis of the present day. Throughout he concentrates on the lives of the local people on their experience as Liverpool developed around them. He looks at their living conditions, at poverty and the laboring poor, at health and the ravages of disease, at the influence of religion and migration, at education and the traumatic experience of war. He shows how the lives of Liverpudlians changed over the centuries and how this is reflected in the records that have survived. His useful book is a valuable tool for anyone researching the history of the city or the life of an individual ancestor.
Book Synopsis Religious Life for Women c.1100-c.1350 by : Berenice M. Kerr
Download or read book Religious Life for Women c.1100-c.1350 written by Berenice M. Kerr and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-07-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed scholarly study of the Order of Fontevraud's English monastic houses. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the Order was notably prestigious and autonomous, renowned both for the prayerfulness of its members and for their independent management of their affairs. The huge following of Robert Arbrissel (d. 1116) included many women - not at first the aristocrats who later dominated the Order of Fontevraud, but prostitutes, beggars, and other representatives of the dregs of society. Urged by Church authorities to stabilize his women followers, Robert gave them a Rule which was, in essentials, that of St Benedict, but he introduced men as chaplains, clerks, and lay-brothers for the nuns. Uniquely, however, for contemporary houses for women, the men were placed firmly under the direction of the nuns and remained there throughout the Order's history. Sister Berenice Kerr's study of Fontevraud's English establishments: Amesbury, Nuneaton, and Westwood (Grovebury, the Order's fourth foundation, was never more than administrative centre) opens up a wide range of insights and information about monasticism and religious life for women in the middle ages. Dr Kerr examines the endowment of each house, and its subsequent acquisition of property and its administration; monastic observance; domestic economy, including expenditure on food and drink; the scale and layout of conventual buildings, and the exploitation of new assets, such as salt-pans, markets, and appropriated churches.

Book excerpt: The Langstone Harbour Archaeological Survey Project was founded to undertake a detailed investigation of a large, shallow marine inlet on the southern coast of England. This volume outlines the results of work carried out between 1993 and 1998 when a broad range of inter-disciplinary investigative techniques were employed: fieldwalking, GPS survey, auger survey, limited excavations, underwater geophysical survey and excavation. A history of the physical development of the harbour as well as the populations that lived in the vicinity and exploited its resources, is given, from the earliest evidence in the Mesolithic and Neolithic, to the Bronze Age Urnfield cemetery, salt production in the Roman period, through to more recent changes and ecological and environmental threats to the survival of this area.
