Book excerpt: Salford is often seen as the smaller twin of Manchester, its neighbour across the River Irwell. In fact, Salford was a borough long before Manchester achieved that status, but even in the 1530s John Leland described it as 'a large suburb to Manchester'. However, during the Industrial Revolution, Manchester grew more rapidly than Salford, although together they were the first 'shock city' of the industrial age, described in graphic detail by writers such as de Tocqueville and Engels. While Manchester city centre became the area's commercial heart, Salford was relegated to the periphery. It certainly had its grim areas, described by Ewan McColl: 'I met my love by the gas works wall, dreamed a dream by the old canal/I kissed my girl by the factory wall, dirty old town, dirty old town.' However, today's Salford is an up and- coming area, home to Media City. This book presents a photographic tour through central Salford, ending up on the 'old canal'.

Book excerpt: Throughout the sixties and early seventies Shirley Baker spent many days wandering the streets of Manchester and Salford, taking photographs of children at play, women out shopping, old men on street corners. Her pictures capture the character of a whole way of life which was just then disappearing: a street world caught in late afternoon light, at the end of an era. Her astonishing colour and black and white photographs were first shown in the highly acclaimed Images of Salford exhibition at Salford Art Gallery.

Book excerpt: World-renowned artist L.S. Lowry immortalised his home town with his paintings of Salford scenes peopled with his trademark 'matchstick men'. The mills and the docks have gone; but today the Lowry Centre stands along side the Ship Canal, an innovative modern complex which fosters history and the arts.Salford is firmly back on the map, and the old dock warehouses have become sought-after apartments and offices. This new history of Salford chronicles events from its evolution some time at the end of the New Stone Age, through Romano/Celtic times and mediaeval expansion, down to the 'heyday' of the Industrial Revolution, the slow decline of the 20th century and the city's 'rebirth' in the 1990s and early 21st century. History is essentially about people and, while all the facts are here, the inhabitants of Salford peep through the curtains of time as well in the events, stories, images and legends that help to bring Salford and its past to life.

Book excerpt: In Victorian England, an eccentric scientist unveils his latest invention: a machine capable of travelling through time. Demonstrating its capabilities, the Time Traveller embarks on a journey to the distant future, arriving in the year 802,701. He discovers a seemingly utopian society inhabited by the gentle Eloi, but soon uncovers a dark and terrifying underworld ruled by the sinister Morlocks. As the Time Traveller delves deeper into this bifurcated world, he realises the grim consequences of societal decay and the potential fate of humanity. H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine is a pioneering work in the science fiction genre, introducing the concept of time travel and coining the term »time machine«. First published in 1895, it has since become a classic, influencing countless works of fiction and shaping the genre’s development. H. G. WELLS [1866-1946] was a British author and pioneer in the science fiction genre. His works, including The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, delved into futuristic and societal critique themes. Wells’s visionary portrayals of technology, social structures, and extraterrestrial life made him one of the most influential writers in his field and a precursor to modern science fiction.
