Book excerpt: This volume of exiles’ accounts “[uses] the stories as springboards to discussing Iraqi history, politicization, and diasporic experiences in depth” (International Journal of Middle East Studies). With the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Iraqis abroad, hoping to return one day to a better Iraq, became uncertain exiles. Return to Ruin tells the human story of this exile in the context of decades of U.S. imperial interests in Iraq—from the U.S. backing of the 1963 Ba’th coup and support of Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s, to the 1991 Gulf War and 2003 invasion and occupation. Zainab Saleh shares the experiences of Iraqis she met over fourteen years of fieldwork in Iraqi London—offering stories from an aging communist nostalgic for the streets she marched since childhood, a devout Shi’i dreaming of holy cities and family graves, and newly uprooted immigrants with fresh memories of loss, as well as her own. Focusing on debates among Iraqi exiles about what it means to be an Iraqi after years of displacement, Saleh weaves a narrative that draws attention to a once-dominant, vibrant Iraqi cultural landscape and social and political shifts among the diaspora after decades of authoritarianism, war, and occupation in Iraq. Through it all, this book illuminates how Iraqis continue to fashion a sense of belonging and imagine a future, built on the shards of these shattered memories.

Book excerpt: Louise McCabe, a former intelligence analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), knows Saleh is brutal, brilliant, and cold-blooded. Saleh is no longer an intellectual exercise but is an existential threat to Louise and everyone she loves. The subject knows little of real value other than the attack will be local. Following the interrogation, they realize if he was using the name Saleh, there is a mole in the IC. What they need more than anything is intelligence, and they have none. Louise knows she must become the intelligence gatherer. She knows the risks she must take, her lack of field experience, and how it will endanger her and her family, but she has no choice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liber Amicorum Samir Saleh Reflections on Dispute Resolution with Particular Emphasis on the Arab World Edited by Nassib G. Ziadé This welcome volume upturns the widespread perception that the Islamic and Arab worlds fail to conform to today’s internationalized approach to dispute resolution. With contributions from nineteen eminent authors – judges, arbitrators, academics, practicing lawyers, representatives of international arbitral institutions – this collection of essays and analyses manifests the salutary worldwide influence of Arab law and its intersection with the common law and civil law traditions. Conceived to honor Mr. Samir Saleh, one of the leading scholars and international lawyers in the Arab world, the book offers work in English and French that focuses on the fields of law to which Mr. Saleh has made his most significant contributions, namely, arbitration and mediation in different types of international disputes. Among the issues and topics covered are the following: the position of Islamic and Middle Eastern law on alternative dispute resolution; dichotomy between confidentiality and enforcement; Shari’a applicable to the merits in international commercial arbitration; oil and gas agreements; State submission to arbitration in the Arab world; the role of arbitral institutions in the Middle East and North Africa; and interaction between public and private law concepts and practices. The authors highlight the ongoing challenges and outlook for dispute resolution in the region, discussing case law, evolving legislation, and changes in the practice of international arbitration and mediation in several Arab countries. Mr. Saleh’s work in strengthening international law while bridging the legal and cultural divides between the Arab region and the rest of the world will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come. Given recent developments in Arab and Islamic law and the resulting focus on Arab scholarship and jurisprudence, along with Mr. Saleh’s unparalleled influence on dispute resolution in the Arab world and beyond, the wide-ranging expertise revealed in this Liber Amicorum is sure to be of great practical value to international law practitioners and law firms, alternative dispute resolution scholars, and arbitral institutions worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yassin al-Haj Saleh is a leftist dissident who spent sixteen years as a political prisoner and now lives in exile. He describes with precision and fervour the events that led to Syria’s 2011 uprising, the metamorphosis of the popular revolution into a regional war, and the ‘three monsters’ Saleh sees ‘treading on Syria’s corpse’: the Assad regime and its allies, ISIS and other jihadists, and Russia and the US. Where conventional wisdom has it that Assad’s army is now battling religious fanatics for control of the country, Saleh argues that the emancipatory, democratic mass movement that ignited the revolution still exists, though it is beset on all sides. The Impossible Revolution is a powerful, compelling critique of Syria’s catastrophic war, which has profoundly reshaped the lives of millions of Syrians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on various perspectives and analysis, the Handbook problematizes Middle East politics through an interdisciplinary prism, seeking a melioristic account of the field. Thematically organized, the chapters address political, social, and historical questions by showcasing both theoretical and empirical insights, all of which are represented in a style that ease readers into sophisticated induction in the Middle East. It positions the didactic at the centre of inquiry. Contributions by forty-four scholars, both veterans and newcomers, rethink knowledge frames, conceptual categories, and fieldwork praxis. Substantive themes include secularity and religion, gender, democracy, authoritarianism, and new "borderline" politics of the Middle East. Like any field of knowledge, the Middle East is constituted by texts, authors, and readers, but also by the cultural, spatial, and temporal contexts within which diverse intellectual inflections help construct (write–speak) academic meaning, knowing, and practice. By denaturalizing notions of singularity of authorship or scholarship, the Handbook plants a dialogic interplay animated by multi-vocality, multi-modality, and multi-disciplinarity. Targeting graduate students and young scholars of political and social sciences, the Handbook is significant for understanding how the Middle East is written and re-written, read and re-read (epistemology, methodology), and for how it comes to exist (ontology).
