Book excerpt: During much of the 1980s, US wage growth has been unexpectedly slow in the face of relatively low unemployment rates and high capacity utilization rates. This collection of papers resulting from the Wage Structure Conference held by the Federal Research Bank of Cleveland, November 1989, helps explain labour market behaviour in that period. The contributors - academic and research economists in labour economics - provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the wage-setting process in the US labour market.

Book Synopsis Benefit Levels of Nonfederal Retirement Programs by : United States. General Accounting Office
Download or read book Benefit Levels of Nonfederal Retirement Programs written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a congressional request, GAO prepared information on retirement programs in the nonfederal sector by estimating the levels of benefits at retirement that selected nonfederal programs provide to employees by age, years of service, and salary levels. GAO found that benefit formulas for nonfederal pension plans vary considerably; therefore, it calculated the benefit amounts produced by the formulas as a percentage of final salary. GAO found little difference in the average pension plan benefits available to retirees at age 65 and age 62 when years of service and salary levels were equal. Pension plan benefits for employees retiring at age 55 with 30 years of service ranged from 72 to 84 percent of the benefits they would have received if they had retired at age 62 with the same years of service and salary levels. In state government pension plans, age 55 benefits were about 85 percent of the benefit amounts at age 62 with the same years of service and salary levels. In addition, GAO found that state government pension plans provided higher average benefits than private sector pension plans. Finally, GAO found that the capital accumulation plan component of a typical private sector retirement program can add substantial retirement benefits to participating employees. A 30-year career employee who contributes to the plan can supplement his pension and social security benefits by 16 percent or more of his final annual salary. Since states generally do not match employee contributions in their plans, GAO did not calculate any thrift plans for them. Therefore, the combined benefits for state employees were less than those received by private sector employees who participate in thrift plans.
Book Synopsis The Corporate Transformation of Health Care by : J. Warren Salmon
Download or read book The Corporate Transformation of Health Care written by J. Warren Salmon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume illuminates the growing corporate in-roads into the health care system and its probable consequences, especially for physicians and other practitioners. Its fourteen contributors examine both the delivery and supply functions in the health sector in America. Ambulatory care, hospitals, health maintenance organizations, and health promotion activities are each critically dissected. A major thrust of the investigations focuses upon implications for the medical profession, principally how the increased scrutiny over clinical decision making by corporate purchasers and payors threatens the traditional role and relative autonomy of physicians. Varying theoretical perspectives are debated, with an additional Canadian perspective offered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employee Ownership Through ESOPs: Implications for the Public Corporation summarizes the large body of literature on employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) and the phenomenon of employee ownership. The author has discovered and reviewed over 700 articles on the subject in academic and professional journals of business, labor, law, and social science since 1973. The study is divided into four parts. The first part examines law, public policy, and regulation; the status of ESOPs in the publicly held corporation; corporate uses and labor-management roles; the impact of the ESOP on labor-management cooperation and the economic performance of firms; and the future of employee ownership. The second part presents selected case studies which illustrate the range of corporate uses and benefits to workers and the difficult issues these raise. The third part presents abstracts of articles or books that are central to understanding the major findings and implications of employee ownership and gaining an ordered introduction to the field. The fourth part includes references to these abstracted materials and to the subjects discussed in the first and second sections. This study emphasizes the significance of employee ownership to corporate officers, middle managers, union officials, and/or local labor representatives and employee leaders who are associated with a publicly held company.
