Book excerpt: First published in 1865, 'Value, Price, and Profit' was originally given as a speech by Karl Marx, a German philosopher, critic of political economy, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary. He is one of the most influential social theorists and political philosophers of the 19th century. Marx sought to reveal the economic patterns underpinning the capitalist mode of production, in contrast to classical political economists such as Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Say, David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill. This speech expands on his ideas regarding the relationship between wages and profit. Marx argues that workers are responsible for forming the value that leads to profit and they are entitled to share in it through increased wages. Marx's theories remain widely studied for their relevance and insight into the problems and inequalities that continue to exist in modern economic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Value, Price and Profit The circumstances under which this paper was read are narrated at the beginning of the work. The paper was never published during the lifetime of Marx. It was found amongst his papers after the death of Engels. Among many other characteristics of Marx, this paper shows two especially. These are his patient willingness to make the meaning of his ideas plain to the humblest student, and the extraordinary clearness of those ideas. In a partial sense the present volume is an epitome of the first volume of Capital. More than one of us have attempted to analyze and simplify that volume, with not too much success perhaps. In fact, a witty friend and commentator has suggested that what is now required is an explanation by Marx of our explanations of him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Macroeconomics presents a new paradigm in macroeconomic analysis initiated by Bernard Schmitt. It explains the historical origin, the analytical contents, and the actual relevance of this new paradigm, with respect to current major economic issues at national and international level. These issues concern both advanced and emerging market economies, referring to inflation, unemployment, financial instability, and economic crises. In the first part of this volume, leading scholars explain the historical origin and analytical content of quantum macroeconomics. The second part explores its relevance with respect to the current major economic issues such as the sovereign debt crisis and European monetary union. The volume also features two previously unpublished papers by Bernard Schmitt. The main findings of this book concern the need to go beyond agents’ behaviour to understand the structural origin of a variety of macroeconomic problems, notably, inflation, unemployment, financial instability, and economic crises. The originality that pervades all contributions is plain, when one considers the lack of any structural explanation of national and international economic disorders in the literature within the mainstream approach to economics. This edited volume is of great interest to those who study macroeconomics, monetary economics and money and banking.

Book excerpt: This, in 1898 posthumously published, pamphlet was Marx's response to an argument on trade union activity that took place at a meeting of the General Council of the International Working Men's Association in 1865. Weston, a follower of Robert Owen, argued that wage increases did not benefit the workers immediately concerned, and, worse, also harmed workers in other sections of industry by causing price inflation. In the first five chapters of this pamphlet Marx easily demolishes the arguments of “Citizen Weston”. This part of the pamphlet is now mainly of academic interest since most of Weston's points were so crude that they are rarely heard today. From chapter VI on, however, Marx sets out in simple form his Labour Theory of Value; explains the source of rent, interest and profit and outlines both the usefulness and the limitations of trade union action. The labor theory of value is the economic theory of value which argues that the value of a commodity is related to the labor needed to produce or obtain that commodity. Presently the concept is most often associated with Marxian economics, although it appears as a foundation to earlier classical economic theorists such as Adam Smith and David Ricardo. However, Karl Marx never used the phrase "labor theory of value" to describe his theory of value, but instead made reference to a law of value.
