Book Synopsis Saints of Tonga by : Riley Moore Moffat
Download or read book Saints of Tonga written by Riley Moore Moffat and published by Brigham Young University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the faith of the Tongan Saints from contact with our first missionaries in 1891 until the centennial commemoration held in Tonga in 1991, with an epilogue that will highlight events until the present. At that centennial commemoration, rain fell upon the Tonga Saints, and so did revelation from the mouth of Apostle Russell M. Nelson. After thanking the congregation for their "great example as Latter-day Saints," he pronounced a blessing upon the local Church members, "that from this island kingdom, faith may radiate through the entire world and affect the lives of people all over the world."

Book Synopsis Migration and Transnationalism by : Helen Lee
Download or read book Migration and Transnationalism written by Helen Lee and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Islanders have engaged in transnational practices since their first settlement of the many islands in the region. As they moved beyond the Pacific and settled in nations such as New Zealand, the U.S. and Australia these practices intensified and over time have profoundly shaped both home and diasporic communities. This edited volume begins with a detailed account of this history and the key issues in Pacific migration and transnationalism today. The papers that follow present a range of case studies that maintain this focus on both historical and contemporary perspectives. Each of the contributors goes beyond a narrowly economic focus to present the human face of migration and transnationalism; exploring questions of cultural values and identity, transformations in kinship, intergenerational change and the impact on home communities. Pacific migration and transnationalism are addressed in this volume in the context of increasing globalisation and growing concerns about the future social, political and economic security of the Pacific region. As the case studies presented here show, the future of the Pacific depends in many ways on the ties diasporic Islanders maintain with their homelands.

Book Synopsis Aviation Photography by : James O'Rear
Download or read book Aviation Photography written by James O'Rear and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simply defined, aviation photography is the taking photos of airplanes. But behind the scenes of this seemingly simple act are a number of critical elements: aircraft scheduling, lighting, spotting locations, diversions, and sometimes interactions with law enforcement officials. Aviation photographer James O'Rear takes you on an illustrated tour of these factors and more as he talks about finding locations suitable for photographing aircraft and the equipment needed for short trips and more adventurous locations. Basic photographic concepts and techniques are covered as well as discussions on basic identification of both commercial and military aircraft. Lavishly illustrated with images from his aviation archives James brings a common-man style of writing to a subject near and dear to his heart; the documentation of aircraft and the situations in which they are found all around the world.

Book Synopsis The Living Icon in Byzantium and Italy by : Paroma Chatterjee
Download or read book The Living Icon in Byzantium and Italy written by Paroma Chatterjee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore the emergence and function of a novel pictorial format in the Middle Ages, the vita icon, which displayed the magnified portrait of a saint framed by scenes from his or her life. The vita icon was used for depicting the most popular figures in the Orthodox calendar and, in the Latin West, was deployed most vigorously in the service of Francis of Assisi. This book offers a compelling account of how this type of image embodied and challenged the prevailing structures of vision, representation and sanctity in Byzantium and among the Franciscans in Italy between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. Paroma Chatterjee uncovers the complexities of the philosophical and theological issues that had long engaged both the medieval East and West, such as the fraught relations between words and images, relics and icons, a representation and its subject, and the very nature of holy presence.
