Book excerpt: Matt Collins had everything a man could want. Cars, houses, boats and a life that was a dream. But one dark night he listened to the whisper of cocaine and lost every single thing he owned. He took a long drive to Destin, Florida, filled with shame and ready to die. What he didn't count on was meeting Joseph Mason, a man of the cloth, who decided to take him under his proverbial wing. A gripping story of one man's climb back to the human race, a son trying to find his father, and an old tramp who took it upon himself to bring the two together. You may laugh and you will cry, but you won't put this book down. For in the great harbors of Destin lay secrets of drug deals and kingpins, and the twist and turns of this story are worn by a ragged old scientist who in his last days throws a seven in the game of life, and turns Matt's world upside down. Saints and Vagabonds isn't just any novel. It's a man's life in words. On paper. And oh, yes, you will miss a few nights' sleep over this one. So get comfortable and go for the ride.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolution of the Saints is a study, both historical and sociological, of the radical political response of the Puritans to disorder. It interprets and analyzes Calvinism as the first modern expression of an unremitting determination to transform on the basis of an ideology the existing political and moral order. Michael Walzer examines in detail the circumstances and ideological options of the Puritan intelligentsia and gentry. He sees Puritanism, in sharp contrast to some generally accepted views, as the political theory of intellectuals and gentlemen attempting to create a new government and society.

Book excerpt: Where the Crawdads Sing meets The Four Winds as award-winning author Donna Everhart's latest novel immerses readers in its unique setting—the turpentine camps and pine forests of the American South during the Great Depression. This captivating story of friendship, survival, and three vagabonds' intersecting lives will stay with readers long after turning the final page. It takes courage to save yourself... In the dense pine forests of North Carolina, turpentiners labor, hacking into tree trunks to draw out the sticky sap that gives the Tar Heel State its nickname, and hauling the resin to stills to be refined. Among them is Rae Lynn Cobb and her husband, Warren, who run a small turpentine farm together. Though the work is hard and often dangerous, Rae Lynn, who spent her childhood in an orphanage, is thankful for it--and for her kind if careless husband. When Warren falls victim to his own negligence, Rae Lynn undertakes a desperate act of mercy. To keep herself from jail, she disguises herself as a man named "Ray" and heads to the only place she can think of that might offer anonymity--a turpentine camp in Georgia named Swallow Hill. Swallow Hill is no easy haven. The camp is isolated and squalid, and commissary owner Otis Riddle takes out his frustrations on his browbeaten wife, Cornelia. Although Rae Lynn works tirelessly, she becomes a target for Crow, the ever-watchful woods rider who checks each laborer's tally. Delwood Reese, who's come to Swallow Hill hoping for his own redemption, offers "Ray" a small measure of protection, and is determined to improve their conditions. As Rae Lynn forges a deeper friendship with both Del and Cornelia, she begins to envision a path out of the camp. But she will have to come to terms with her past, with all its pain and beauty, before she can open herself to a new life and seize the chance to begin again. “Fans of Sarah Addison Allen won't be able to put it down.” —Booklist

Roberts The time-period covered in this sixth volume of the HISTORY OF THE CHURCH is less than one year - from the 1st of September, 1843, to the 29th of June, 1844. Events within this period are therefore given in elaborate detail. The general reader and the student of our history will find in this volume a larger collection of documents, official and otherwise, covering this period, than will be found elsewhere. This volume also closes the first Period of our Church History, the period marked off by two events: (1) the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith; and (2) his martyrdom and that of his brother Hyrum, at Carthage, Illinois.

Book excerpt: Joseph Smith's monumental work, 'History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,' is a comprehensive seven-volume series that delves into the origins and early history of the Mormon religion. Written in a straightforward and chronological style, the book provides a detailed account of the key events, revelations, and challenges faced by the early leaders of the Church. Smith's writing is marked by his deep religious faith and his desire to document the history of his faith community for future generations. The book not only serves as a primary source for Mormon history but also sheds light on the religious and social context of 19th-century America. Each volume is filled with primary sources, personal accounts, and doctrinal teachings, making it a valuable resource for scholars of American religious history. Joseph Smith, as the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wrote this comprehensive history to provide a record of the divine guidance and challenges faced by the early leaders of the Church. Smith's personal experiences, religious vision, and dedication to his faith are evident in the meticulous detail and spiritual insights found throughout the series. Written with a sense of mission and purpose, 'History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' stands as a testament to Smith's belief in the importance of recording and preserving the history of his religious community. I highly recommend this seven-volume edition to readers interested in Mormon history, American religious movements, and the foundational texts of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighty percent of Filipinos (about 80 million people) identify with the Catholic faith. Visitors to the Philippines might find it surprising that images of Catholic saints, the Child Christ, and the Virgin Mary can be seen in all kinds of public and private spaces throughout this Asian country, such as in restaurants, shopping malls, pasted to walls, painted on buses, and of course, in-home altars. Many of these saints bear Spanish names and their legends almost always date to the period of Spanish colonialism. Saints of Resistance: Devotions in the Philippines under Early Spanish Rule explores why, in spite of their fraught history with Spanish colonialism (which ended in 1898), Filipinos have staunchly held on to the faith in their saints. This is the first scholarly study to focus on the dynamic life of saints and their devotees in the Spanish Philippines, from the sixteenth through the early part of the eighteenth century. The book offers an in-depth analysis of the origins and development of the beliefs and rituals surrounding some of the most popular saints in the Philippines, namely, Santo Niño de Cebu, Our Lady of Caysasay, Our Lady of La Naval, and Our Lady of Antipolo. Christina Lee recovers the voices of colonized Philippine subjects as well as those of Spaniards who, through the veneration of miraculous saints, projected and relieved their grievances, anxieties, and histories of communal suffering. Based on critical readings of primary sources, the book traces how individuals and their communities often refashioned iconographic devotions to the Holy Child and to the Virgin Mary by introducing non-Catholic elements derived from pre-Hispanic, animistic, and Chinese traditions. Ultimately, the book reveals how Philippine natives, Chinese migrants, and Spaniards reshaped the imported devotions as expressions of dissidence, resistance, and survival.

Book excerpt: History of Joseph Smith, the Prophet and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a semi-official history of the early Latter Day Saint movement during the lifetime of founder Joseph Smith. It is largely composed of Smith's writings and interpretations and editorial comments by Smith's secretaries, scribes, and after Smith's death, historians of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The history was written between 1839 and 1856. It was later published in its entirety with extensive annotations and edits by B. H. Roberts as History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first six volumes of this work cover the "History of Joseph Smith" from his birth in 1805 to his death in 1844. Volume seven covers the material from immediately after Smith's death in June 1844 until the church's first general conference in Salt Lake City.
