A knowledge of Greek is nowhere presupposed, although it will be a great advantage to those who possess it. Technical terms have been almost entirely omitted, and the same is true of abbreviations. I should be particularly glad if this little volume proved interesting and serviceable to the ordinary Bible-reader and the average Bible-class member. In their interests, experience shows the necessity of explaining, with apologies to the scholarly, the only abbreviations which are liable to puzzle them, viz., that ff. after the number of a verse or page means "and the following verses" (or pages), and that a or b after the number of a verse or page indicates respectively the first or second half of that verse or page. Wherever possible, references have been given to English translations, not to the original foreign works.
