Book excerpt: St. John of Capistran was many things, a Franciscan, a theologian, a crusader, but ultimately a reformer of the Church, a friend of saints and a man zealous for the salvation of souls. The deep remorse that took possession of him on the day of his conversion never left him and remained the dominant attitude of his mind. This penitential disposition underlay his preaching. Setting aside all reserve, he would make public confession in the pulpit, thus emulating the penitent Magdalene, his favorite saint. We are not surprised that such an energetic temperamental nature, always ready for action and battle, did not escape reproaches of irascibility and impetuosity. Yet appeals to his sympathy must have been frequent. CapistranoÕs history is inextricably bound up with the great figures and world events of the 15th century. Hofer, in this powerful historical biography of the saint, traces his life as a reformer, preacher, and leading a Crusade to stop the Turkish onslaught into Europe.

Book excerpt: Stanko (Croatian Historical Institute) identifies a resurgence of academic interest in medieval miracle accounts as rich sources of theological, historical, and anthropological insight. Here he analyzes the miracle collections promoting the canonization of a 15th- century Observant Franciscan preacher--thoroughly studying widely scattered manuscripts (Naples, Rome, Venice, Paris) to reconstruct the accounts and provide insight into everyday life, hardships, illnesses, hopes, dreams, and anxieties during the late medieval and early modern period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we all know and as many of our well-established textbooks have argued for decades, the Inquisition was one of the most frightening and bloody chapters in Western history; Pope Pius XII was anti-Semitic and rightfully called “Hitler’s Pope,” the Dark Ages were stunting the progress of knowledge to be redeemed only by the secular spirit of the Enlightenment. The religious Crusades were an early example of the rapacious Western thirst for riches and power. But what if these long held beliefs were all wrong? In this stunning, powerful, and ultimately persuasive book, Rodney Stark, one of the most highly regarded sociologists of religion and bestselling author of The Rise of Christianity (HarperSanFrancisco 1997), argues that some of our most firmly held ideas about history, ideas that paint the Catholic Church in the least favorable light are, in fact, fiction. Why have we held these wrongheaded ideas so firmly and for so long? And if our beliefs are wrong, what is the truth? In each chapter, Stark takes on a well-established anti-Catholic myth, gives a fascinating history of how each myth became conventional wisdom and presents a startling picture of the real truth. For example, instead of the Spanish Inquisition being an anomaly of torture and murder of innocent people persecuted for “imaginary” crimes such as witchcraft and blasphemy, Stark argues that not only did the Spanish Inquisition spill very little blood, but it was a major force in support of moderation and justice. Stark dispels the myth of Pope Pius XII being apathetic or even helpful to the Nazi movement, such as to merit the title “Hitler’s Pope,” and instead shows that the campaign to link Pope Pius XII to Hitler was initiated by the Soviet Union, presumably in hopes of neutralizing the Vatican in post-World War II affairs. Many praised Pope Pius XIIs vigorous and devoted efforts to saving Jewish lives during the war. Instead of understanding the Dark Ages as a millennium of ignorance and backwardness inspired by the Catholic Church’s power, Stark argues that the whole notion of the “Dark Ages” was an act of pride perpetuated by anti-religious intellectuals who were determined to claim that theirs was the era of “Enlightenment.” In the end, readers of Bearing False Witness will have a more accurate history of the Catholic Church and will also understand why it became unfairly maligned for so long. Bearing False Witness is a compelling and sobering account of how egotism and ideology often work together to give us a false truth.

Book excerpt: Maureen Capistran did not know much, if anything, about God and Heaven. An admitted workaholic, living in the Boston area, she had little interest in spiritual topics. Accumulating wealth was her primary goal. Then without warning or reason, in 1989, Maureen began to experience episodes of demonic attacks that terrified her. Little did she realize at the time, she had been chosen by God for a specific purpose. God the Father gave Maureen many gifts including, healing, knowledge, and discernment to guide her in the mission He had planned for her life. He also gave her the grace to see and hear Jesus, the Blessed Mother and Archangel Michael. She has spent over 20 years in service to Heaven using these gifts helping people in need. Simple, yet profound, this book shows what God would like us to know and understand to advance our spiritual journey on earth. The impact of the power of "one" and proof that God exists.Endorsement by Joan Wester Anderson the author of eight books about angels, including the New York Times best-seller Where Angels Walk.

Book excerpt: Among the followers of St. Francis there were saints and teachers who were endowed by God with a natural and supernatural kinship with their holy founder. They developed the Franciscan spirituality which had its origin in the simple practical life and the rules of St. Francis; and they gave further, clearer expression to it both by their lives and their writings. Thus they pointed out the characteristic traits of Franciscan spirituality, both in a practical and a theoretical way. Concerning the distinctive features of Franciscan spirituality, as contained in the Franciscan tradition, suffice it to say that its essence is doctrinal Christocentrism and practical imitation of Christ, conformity with Christ, prompted by love. Distinctive aspects of Franciscan piety are childlike love of God, our Father, devotion to the Humanity of Christ, His Sacred Heart, the Holy Eucharist, the mysteries of the Nativity and the Passion, His Virgin Mother Mary, and reverence for the Catholic priesthood. Franciscan love of God finds expression also in charity to our fellowmen, understanding them as our brothers, especially in aid to the poor and sick and in apostolic zeal for souls, Christian and pagan. Total poverty detaches the Franciscan soul from creatures, but at the same time it recognizes God in created things and uses the latter to mount to God. Emphasis is placed on the will, and hence on love and action above speculation. The atmosphere in which the Franciscan spirit develops is one of individual freedom of the spirit, absence of coercive and confining methods, love of enterprise, and a sense of realism. On the path of this traditional Franciscan way of life many have attained sainthood. Thus, The Seraphic Order, which recounts their lives and virtues, can well serve as a practical textbook of Franciscan spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Francis de Sales said, that while many saints should be imitated, some of the saints are to be admired more than imitated. The life of St. Francis gives us some of both. On the one hand, his extraordinary love of God, his humility, his penance, his charity, his prudence and his detachment from and loathing for the world, are all virtues that every Christian should seek to emulate throughout his life. On the other hand, his discernment of spirits, his miracles, his extraordinary fasting and mortification of his body, his ecstasies and the stigmata are all things God performed in St. Francis for our wonderment, to give glory to Him for what He brought about in his servant. We have provided a spiritual classic, Fr. Candide Challipe's Life of St. Francis, translated by the Oratorians of London into English. The value of Challipe's narrative, having compiled all of the sources available at the time of his writing (1700's) is that he balances the narrative between the two different elements which made Francis one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church. Challipe's work is not only a spiritual tour de force, but is also a great work of theology, as he unfolds the life of St. Francis with respect to the subsequent theology of the Church through St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas, The Council of Trent and St. Robert Bellarmine. He quotes frequently not only from the Franciscan sources, but also from the Holy Scripture, the Fathers, and the great Theologians of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The important feature of the Mediatrix press edition, freshly scanned and OCRed from the 1877 American Edition, is that we have retained all of the footnotes, and faithfully reproduced the Oratorian translation without any abridgement, only removing notes of mere technicalities and updating certain jarring old English spellings. We have also added several of the frescoes of Giotto, which are found in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, to elucidate and illustrate the work. Giotto is often credited with beginning the Renaissance, and in some ways he did, though he can scarcely be identified with the humanist goals of Petrarch, or the classicism of Michaelangelo or Raphael. Giotto is firmly within the Byzantine tradition of Iconography, but as he progressed in his career added elements of perspective and three dimensional painting, while presenting an essentially iconographic depiction of the life of St. Francis. The Frescoes reproduced here, are filled with theological depth which bring out in pictures (in an age prior to the printing press when literacy was not accessible to the masses due to technological limitations) the spiritual depth of the events in St. Francis' momentous life. In fine, Francis is a simulacrum of Christ Himself, and many of the events of his life were brought about by providence, in order to to conform the life of the Saint to his own. His, is an epoch, placed in a time of great emperors, sultans, and Popes such as Innocent III, one of the most able Popes in history. His, is the age of St. Dominic, the Crusades, the Reconquista, and a great period of reform in the life of the Church, as well as a well-spring for subsequent renewal in the 16th and 17th centuries. The life of Francis also is a model of reform in our age, when the crisis in the Church is not only of the secular state on the outside, but the corruption on the inside, which can only be renewed by the qualities which allowed Francis to perform miracles and be elevated by Christ in the way he was, true faith, penance, reverence for the Mass and the Eucharist, and divine apostolic charity. May this work be a benefit to everyone in the Church, that they will seek to be one with Christ as completely as St. Francis. Check out this and more titles at www.mediatrixpress.com
