Book excerpt: Foreword: Placement of the term "changeable" next to the word "historical" in this book's title may appear repetitive to the insightful reader. Indeed history is an ongoing process. Communities grow, populations vary, and economies rise and fall. History captures and interprets the change that goes on around us. Yet in Saginaw "change" is the password that opens the door to understanding the community's past. Few cities have undergone such extensive economic fluctuations, physical restructuring and demographic changes as Saginaw. The exploitation of "inexhaustible resources," first by the Indians, fur traders and later lumbermen marked earlier changes. This bounty did not last forever; after 30 years of transition something even better came along. By combining text, documents, remembrances, and quotations with a pictorial narrative one can look back at Saginaw's changeable past. New faces and new technologies will likely bring additional challenges, but by looking at the past Saginaw's citizens can be reassured that the accomplishments and adaptability of earlier generations has prepared the community well for the changeable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Indians have lost much of their land over the years, but their legacy is evident in the many places around the United States that have Indian names. Countless placenames have, however, been corrupted over time, and numerous placenames have similar spellings but different meanings. This reference work is a reprint in one combined volume of the two-volume set published by McFarland in 2003 and 2005. Volume One covers the name origins and histories of cities, towns and villages in the United States that have Indian names. It is arranged alphabetically by state, then alphabetically by city, town or village name. Additional data include population figures and county names. Probable Indian placenames with no certain origin also receive entries, and as much history as possible is provided about those locations. Volume Two covers more than 1400 rivers, lakes, mountains and other natural features in the United States with Indian names. It is arranged by state, and then alphabetically by natural feature. Counties are provided for most entries, with multiple counties listed for some entries where appropriate. In addition to name origins and meanings, geophysical data such as the heights of mountains and lengths of waterways are indicated.

Book excerpt: In Negotiating Relief, Susan Stein-Roggenbuck examines Michigan's implementation of the New Deal relief programs and the state's reorganization of welfare in 1939. Local officials, social workers, and recipients were key players in the Michigan debates over how best to administer relief. The book sheds important light on the profession of social work and public welfare, and the development of nonfederal relief at the state and local levels after 1935. Guided by fiscal localism and a firm belief in home rule, local officials fought to retain control of relief. Stein-Roggenbuck argues that while significant changes occurred in welfare policy as a result of the New Deal, many continuities remained. Among those was the responsibility of families to provide financial support. Often forgotten were those on general relief--individuals who did not fit the federal programs such as Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) and Old Age Assistance (OAA). General relief became a third track of welfare. Drawing on newspaper records, county and city board minutes, social welfare agency records, federal records, and case file records, Negotiating Relief gives voice to the numerous groups involved in welfare debates, particularly the recipients of relief. This book adds to our understanding of the local implementation of welfare policy in both rural and urban areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan's foremost lumbertowns, flourishing urban industrial centers in the late 19th century, faced economic calamity with the depletion of timber supplies by the end of the century. Turning to their own resources and reflecting individual cultural identities, Saginaw, Bay City, and Muskegon developed dissimilar strategies to sustain their urban industrial status. This study is a comprehensive history of these lumbertowns from their inception as frontier settlements to their emergence as reshaped industrial centers. Primarily an examination of the role of the entrepreneur in urban economic development, Michigan Lumbertowns considers the extent to which the entrepreneurial approach was influenced by each city's cultural-ethnic construct and its social history. More than a narrative history, it is a study of violence, business, and social change.
