Book excerpt: New insights into the trade and processing of mineral raw materials for glass making - Free ebook at OAPEN Library (www.oapen.org) This book presents a reconstruction of the Hellenistic-Roman glass industry from the point of view of raw material procurement. Within the ERC funded ARCHGLASS project, the authors of this work developed new geochemical techniques to provenance primary glass making. They investigated both production and consumer sites of glass, and identified suitable mineral resources for glass making through geological prospecting. Because the source of the raw materials used in the manufacturing of natron glass can be determined, new insights in the trade of this material are revealed. While eastern Mediterranean glass factories were active throughout the Hellenistic to early Islamic period, western Mediterranean and possibly Italian and North African sources also supplied the Mediterranean world with raw glass in early Roman times. By combining archaeological and scientific data, the authors develop new interdisciplinary techniques for an innovative archaeological interpretation of glass trade in the Hellenistic-Roman world, highlighting the development of glass as an economic material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, a potters' quarter was discovered to the east of the town of Sagalassos (SW Asia Minor, the region of Pissidia). In an area of about two hectares dump of misfired pottery provide evidence for the local production of a wide variety of ceramic products. In economical terms, the local tableware or Sagalassos red slip ware can be considered the most important feature of this production centre. After a Hellenistic antecedent, mass production of this tableware started during the Augustan period and lasted into the first half of the seventh century AD. The town of Sagalassos was abandoned shortly afterwards. The ware was traded intensively throughout Anatolia, and has also been identified at a series of sites in the eastern Mediterranean. This volume presents, on the one hand, an overview of the typology of Sagalassos red slip ware, based on descriptive statistical techniques. On the other hand, the chronological evolution of Sagalassos red slip ware is defined by linking quantified ceramic assemblages.

The archaeological excavations at this site yield large quantities of animal remains that represent mainly consumption refuse of its former inhabitants. The bones, teeth, and molluscs are described, as well as the various traces left by animals and man on these remains. The importance of herding versus hunting and fishing is discussed, as well as the composition of the livestock. An analysis of the mortality profiles, sex distributions, and pathologies allow inferences about the use of the domestic species as a source of meat or of secondary products (wool, dairy products, and animal power). Attention is paid to butchery practices, bone-working techniques, and to the use of animal remains as a means of reconstructing former trade connections. The former environment is reconstructed, using the habitat preferences of the identified species.

Although the study of ceramics started at an early date, discrepancies and lacunae are rife in this area of archaeological research. For the Roman period the so-called fine wares have always attracted more interest than the more utilitarian ceramics. Although this situation has been rectified to a large extent in the Roman west, the eastern part of the empire remains by and large terra incognita, with most of the effort going into the study of fine wares. A second discrepancy exists between the coastal areas, which are rather well known, and the inland sites, specifically in Asia Minor. This book is one of the first attempts to rectify at least in part the existing situation by studying the common wares of the Roman town of Sagalassos in Pisidia from the first to the middle of the seventh century. The research on a previously unknown pottery manufacturing centre is placed within the wider framework of pottery research in the eastern Mediterranean, but contrary to most of the extant studies, the chosen approach is not limited to typology and chronology. Also included are a full mineralogical/chemical analysis of the different fabrics, both local and imported, while the full typological spectrum of wares and types is described, quantified and illustrated. As such it represents a major addition to the ceramics research concerning the eastern Roman empire.

It was rarely disturbed by external invasions and remained largely untouched by the continuous Roman-Persian conflict until very late in the period, was apparently well connected to the flourishing Mediterranean economy and, as the region closest to Constantinople, is assumed to have played an important part in the provisioning of the imperial capital and the imperial armies. When exactly this prosperity came to an end – the late sixth century, the early, middle or even later seventh century – remains a matter of debate. Likewise, the impact of factors such as the dust veil event of 536, the impact of the bubonic plague that made its first appearance in AD 541/542, the costs and consequences of Justinian’s wars, the Persian attacks of the early seventh century and, eventually the Arab incursions of around the middle of the seventh century, remains controversial. The more general living conditions in both cities and countryside have long been neglected. The majority of the population, however, did not live in urban but in rural contexts. Yet the countryside only found its proper place in regional overviews in the last two decades, thanks to an increasing number of regional surveys in combination with a more refined pottery chronology. Our growing understanding of networks of villages and hamlets is very likely to influence the appreciation of the last decades of Late Antiquity drastically. Indeed, it would seem that the sixth century in particular is characterized not only by a ruralization of cities, but also by the extension and flourishing of villages in Asia Minor, the Roman Near East, and Egypt. This volume's series of themes include the physical development of large and small settlements, their financial situation, and the proportion of public and private investment. Imperial, provincial, and local initiatives in city and countryside are compared and the main motivations examined, including civic or personal pride, military incentives, and religious stimuli. The evidence presented will be used to form opinions on the impact of the plague on living circumstances in the sixth century and to evaluate the significance of the Justinianic period.
