Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four years more than three-quarters of a million tourists have viewed the colorful coral-lined seas off the U.S. coasts while sitting comfortably in submersibles designed to carry over 40 passengers. Seven tourist submersibles have been operating in U.S. waters, and their safety record has been good. The primary concern, however, is that regulations and procedures will ensure that future submersibles builders and operators meet the same or better standards than are found in present operations. This volume examines the development of the tourist submarines industry throughout the world and explores the problems involved with strengthening the Coast Guard's capability of providing the oversight and expertise needed to certify and inspect tourist submersibles. It identifies the needs for system redundancy, hazards analysis, and quality control and recommends ways to enhance emergency rescue capabilities and management of passenger safety. The book also addresses concerns about small two- or three passenger submarines that do not now fall under the Coast Guard's safety purview.

Book Synopsis Passenger Carrying Submersibles: System Safety Analysis by :
Download or read book Passenger Carrying Submersibles: System Safety Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few years, several private companies have been using passenger carrying submersibles to conduct underwater sightseeing tours for tourists. For submersible operations under U.S. jurisdiction, the Coast Guard is required by law to establish and enforce a certain minimum level of safety for vessels. The existing Coast Guard statutes and regulations were developed primarily for surface craft; many of the requirements cannot be applied to or are inappropriate for application to submersibles. Furthermore, for passenger carrying submersibles, the complexity and new concepts employed require that the Coast Guard develop methods to adequately evaluate their safety. This report presents the results of the system safety analysis conducted to identify and assess the hazards associated with the operation of passenger carrying submersibles. Included in this analysis is the definition of the submersible system in terms of the basic system elements: equipment and facilities, procedures, people, and the environment in which the submersible system operates. Hazard identification is accomplished through the creation of accident scenarios, the conduct of a Preliminary Hazard Analysis, and the development of Fault Trees. Finally, undesired events resulting from the hazards are assessed for event severity and the probability of event occurrence. General countermeasures to mitigate the undesired events are presented and the factors to be considered in the evaluation of the countermeasures are delineated. Keywords: Submersible safety; System safety; Passenger carrying submersibles; Submarines; Submersible hazards; Passenger submarines; Underwater tour safety. (SDW).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a unique analysis of current multidisciplinary research on the complex relationships between tourism and the imaginaries of tourist destinations, this book traces the links between tourism imaginaries and their religious (heaven) and political (utopia) antecedents. The substantive chapters are organised into three main thematic sections, the first explores the touristic production and consumption of place imaginaries, the second analyses the way places are practiced through imaginaries and the role imaginaries play in the tourist experience and the final section explores the way images and the media participate in the creation of tourism imaginaries.
