Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Orders on Safety Building Construction: Revised, 1918 Before printing the present edition the committee was again called together to consider certain changes suggested by the experience of the past four years. These changes were of minor importance and were adopted without controversy, ex cept those relating to temporary floors on steel structures. On this subject representatives of the steel contractors and work men were called into consultation by the committee, and the amendments finally adopted were agreed to unanimously. These changes became effective July 6, 1918. In this edition there have also been included a few extracts from the general orders on safety relating to the guarding of machinery, and other hazards found on construction work as well as in factories. These orders are not new, having been in force for several years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safe Building Construction: A Treatise Giving in Simplest Forms Possible Practical and Theoretical Rules and Formulae Used in Construction of Buildings and General Instruction Safe building construction is the logical sequence of my former work on Construction, Safe Building. Methods of construction and building materials have changed so radically that this new book seems called for. Much of my former work has been retained, though my object has been to condense - saving the student's time in these busy days while still following the original plan which wasz - to furnish to any earnest student the Opportunity to acquire, so far as books will teach, the knowledge necessary to erect safely any building. While of course, the work will be based strictly on the science of mechanics, all useless theory will be avoided. The object will be to make the articles simply practical. To follow any of the mathematical demonstrations, arithmetic, a rudimentary knowledge of algebra and plane geometry will be sufficient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fireproofing of Steel Buildings The want of any systematized and collected form of in formation ou the subject of the development of the fireproofing of steel buildings and its present most approved and efficient methods of treatment', as recommended and used in the best practice of the day, has induced the author to offer this volume. It is hoped that it may rouse more general interest in a phase of building construction, the full importance of which, from an economic standpoint and from its close rela tion to the safety of human life, still largely remains to be realized in a practical and adequate way. The subject of fireproofing is still in the interesting stage of experimentation, and there is vast opportunity for practical ingenuity to make improvement and new suggestion. Indeed the term fireproof in relation to present imperfect conditions and environments is almost utopian. A building can, at best, be only relatively fire and water-proof. No structure can be considered as a unit, exclusive of its neighbor. But it may be assumed that a building designed and erected in accordance with the recommendations made in the following chapters, will be as nearly fireproof as the surrounding build ings and the character of the contents will permit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Build a Home: The House Practical; Being Suggestions as to Safety From Fire, Safety to Health, Comfort, Convenience, Durability, and Economy One builds a home, as a rule, but once in a lifetime. Unless an architect or builder by profession, he is liable to make serious mistakes, and to overlook many things which would conduce to the comfort and safety of himself and his family. Even if he be an architect or builder, he will do well not to rely entirely upon his own knowledge, but to consult others. While he will be likely to escape oversights in proportion as he has had experience, especially if he has been systematic in preserving notes from time to time of discoveries and details for which the memory cannot be relied upon, it is safe for him to assume that some of his acquaintances, especially if experts, may know some things which he does not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fireproof Construction: An Authoritative Presentation of the Fire Prevention Problem, Giving the Historical Development of the Art of Safe Building, and the Best Modern Practice in Fireproof and Fire-Resisting From the beginning of time fire has played a most important part in the world's evolution, changes, progress, its very existence. Physicists will tell you the composition of fire, its why and where1 fore, but with all that we are not now concerned. Suffice it for us that fire is what might be called, for our purpose, the visible expres sion of heat. Without solar heat there would be no life here; abso lutely everything depends upon it. But we are not dealing with reflected solar rays and such highly interesting but ultra-scientific matter; we have in mind now mere fire, the combustion of inflam mable materials by ignition and the destruction or damage to many materials by exposure to great heat generated by fire plain, ter restrial burning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.
