Book excerpt: How do today’s leaders move from playing it safe to playing for great? In a volatile time of climate crisis, global pandemics, and disruptive technologies, leaders may find themselves clinging to fear-based mindsets that favor individualism over collectivism – inadvertently controlling their teams rather than inspiring genuine commitment in them. To navigate uncertainty and seize emerging opportunities, leaders must move toward a more facilitative, enabling approach that centers on purpose before profit and the team before the individual. In Safe to Great, consultant, keynote speaker, and author Skip Bowman outlines an integrated organizational and leadership development process for implementing a growth mindset based on psychological safety. Grounded in more than 25 years of experience working with global organizations, Bowman’s model unites theory and practice in a set of practicable principles designed to meet the opportunities and challenges of leading and organizing in the twenty-first century and beyond. Bowman looks to the concept of psychological safety, as described in Amy C. Edmondson’s work on fearless organizations, to examine how a workplace that tolerates risk and exhibits a willingness to experiment can facilitate high levels of innovation. The tenets of a growth mindset, as popularized by Carol Dweck, also serve as a guiding philosophy: Bowman urges organizations to take a generative approach to managing people and resources, putting at least much back as they extract. In this relational model, success rests on the combined achievements and developmental growth of the collective rather than on the accumulation of power and wealth by a single executive or small group of stakeholders. Conversational in tone and packed with big hopes and uncomfortable truths, Safe to Great makes an impassioned appeal for a new standard of leadership that will move people and organizations from a place of relative comfort and little risk to a space of daring curiosity, engagement, and collaboration.

Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Jan Karon welcomes you back home to Mitford in this inspirational novel that “hits the sweet spot at the intersection of your heart and your funny bone” (USA Today). After five hectic years of retirement from Lord’s Chapel, Father Tim Kavanagh returns with his wife, Cynthia, from the land of his Irish ancestors. While he’s glad to be at home in Mitford, something is definitely missing from his life: a pulpit. But when he’s offered one, he decides he doesn’t want it. For years, he believed he had a few answers. Now he has questions. How can he possibly help Dooley’s younger brother, Sammy, make it through the fallout of a disasterous childhood? Could doing a good deed for the town bookstore be the best thing for his befuddled spirit? And who was riding through town in a limo? Not Edith Mallory. Then an editorial in the weekly Muse poses a question that sets the whole town looking for answers: Does Mitford still take care of its own?

Book excerpt: Sailing from one port to another in order to deliver goods is one of the main purposes of any commercial maritime adventure. Although most of the ports in the world have some kind of navigational history and are described in detail on maps, groundings, delays, and other accidents still occur to vessels. With the growing complexity of vessels and the increasing cost of their operation, the amount of damages that the shipowner can suffer by delaying a vessel due to congestion or repairs can be significant. The issue of safe ports and berths naturally stems from the vessel’s operation. This dissertation delineates a meaning of safe ports and berth under English and American law, discusses a standard of culpability of the parties, and sets benchmarks on physical, political, administrative and ecological safety. A standard of liability of the parties responsible for nomination of the port is explained in detail. Under English law, it is a warranty of the charterers that encompasses strict liability for nomination of an unsafe port. American law provides two approaches: one of a warranty given by the charterers; another of a duty of due diligence of the charterers in selecting a port. Physical, political, administrative and environmental conditions of the port are discussed with examples of court’s decisions and arbitration awards. The dissertation concludes with a proposal that the due diligence approach will best reflect the modern realities of the shipping world.

Book excerpt: Adults often try to create a risk-free environment for children, but this can reduce their opportunities to manage their own risk, making it difficult for them to learn how to judge new situations. This practical guide shows how adults can share their own skills with young children and promote understanding of safety within an interesting learning environment. The first edition made a huge contribution to the debate around children and risk. Over ten years later, this new edition thoroughly re-examines the issues of the first edition and assesses recent developments such as risk-benefit analysis and the importance of outdoor experiences.Written for the full range of practitioners involved with children, it will support them to take the middle path of offering enough challenge to benefit children, while avoiding the extremes of over-protection or careless practice.

Book excerpt: This book presents the scientific principles and real-world best practices of behavioral safety, one of the most mature and impactful applications of behavioral science to reduce injuries in industrial workplaces. The authors review the core principles of behavioral science and their application to modern safety processes. Process components are discussed in detail, including risk analysis and pinpointing, direct observation, performance feedback, reinforcing engagement, trending and functional analysis, behavior change interventions, and program evaluation. Discussions are complemented by industry best-practice case studies from world-class behavioral safety programs accredited by the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies (CCBS), which provide compelling evidence of the effectiveness of these behavioral science principles in reducing injury. The Science and Best Practices of Behavioral Safety is essential reading for safety professionals, process safety engineers, and leaders in companies who have implemented, or are considering implementing, behavioral safety; or as an aid to learning more about the scientific background behind effective and practical safety practices. Researchers, expert consultants, and students who are already familiar with the practice will also find the book a valuable source to further develop their expertise.

Book excerpt: These guidelines have been produced to support implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries with regard to safety at sea in the fisheries sector. Their purpose is to enable relevant authorities to develop and implement strategies aimed at improved safety, health and conditions of service at sea in capture fisheries and aquaculture operations. They apply to all commercial fishing activities, as well as activities at sea within the aquaculture sector. Furthermore, the principles therein, may also be applied to vessels engaged in fisheries research. However, while these guidelines are not directed at sport and recreational activities carried out within the aquatic environment, administrations responsible for such sectors may well take note of the safety and health issues therein. The guidelines contribute to Strategic Objective 5: Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises.
