Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The titular story revolves around an aging English professor who, mourning the loss of his wife, robs other people's homes of their sentimental knick-knacks. In "Free Ham," a young dropout wins a ham after her house burns down and refuses to accept it. "Has my ham done anything wrong?" she asks when the grocery store manager demands that she claim it. In "Carry Me Home, Sisters of Saint Joseph," a failed commercial writer moves into the basement of a convent and inadvertently discovers the secrets of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. A girl, hoping to talk her brother out of enlisting in the army, brings Bob Dylan home for Thanksgiving dinner in the quiet, dreamy "North Of." In "The Idea of Marcel," Emily, a conservative, elegant girl, has dinner with the idea of her ex-boyfriend, Marcel. In a night filled with baffling coincidences, including Marcel having dinner with his idea of Emily, she wonders why we tend to be more in love with ideas than with reality. In and out of the rooms of these gritty, whimsical stories roam troubled, funny people struggling to reconcile their circumstances to some kind of American Ideal and failing, over and over.

Book excerpt: Parenting isn't rocket science, it's just brain surgery. And Dr. Joshua Straub has good news for you: You can do it! You don’t need to do all the “right” things as a parent. Both science and the Bible show us that the most important thing we can provide for our kids is a place of emotional safety. In other words, the posture from which we parent matters infinitely more than the techniques of parenting. Emotional safety—more than any other factor—is scientifically linked to raising kids who live, love, and lead well. Learn how to use emotional safety as a foundation from which you parent—and make a cultural impact that could change the world! In Safe House, Dr. Straub draws from his extensive research and personal experience to help you: - Foster healthy identity and social development in children of any age - Win the war without getting overwhelmed in the daily battles - Discipline in a way that builds relationship - Understand how the culture is affecting your child and what you can do about it - Cultivate responsible, self-regulating behavior in your kids - Establish an unshakeable sense of faith, morality, and values in your home - Feel more confident and peaceful as a parent - Find a greater perspective on parenting than what you might see on a daily basis Also includes a Safe House Parenting Assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the Queer Students of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation's (QSAPP) research into housing for LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness in New York City. Based at Columbia GSAPP, QSAPP's interdisciplinary project looks at this issue from the various disciplines of the built environment represented at the school: architecture, real estate, planning, and preservation. The book draws on a range of sources--including data from government and social service organizations, operating models of existing organizations in New York, and interviews with service providers and experts in the field--and perspectives in sociology, public health, and advocacy. Funding is often cited as one of the biggest barriers to solving this housing crisis, but an analysis of funding models and strategies does not currently exist. In addition, housing is a design problem but there are no published reports that analyze LGBTQ youth housing from a spatial perspective. QSAPP hopes that by visualizing this issue and highlighting ways in which these shelters fit into specific planning and real estate systems in the city, we can further shed light on the specific needs of LGBTQ youth and help advise on ways forward with these concerns in mind.

The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I left her room and went to bed. I lay next to David, but we did not speak. There were no words to describe the pain we were in. I thought about the day that had begun so pleasurably and ended so painfully. Even so, I thanked God for the blessings in my life, as I did every night. I asked Him to watch over Candice and provide her with the help she needed. We had not been able to give her what she required. Nothing had worked as we had hoped. I am glad I didnt know then how tragically her storyand ourswould end. What had happened to Candice, and where did it all begin? This is the story of an ordinary family struggling with an extraordinary problem: a special child whose journey was hijacked by teenage drug use. Candice Doucette was a beautiful and well-loved young girl with many friends and talents and supportive parents. What happened to her and her family can happen to any family. In this memoir, her mother candidly shares her experience, in hopes that other parents will find this book a resource as they strive to answer the recurring question, What can we do? And now, nine years later, Cynthia writes an epilogue to give the reader insight into her life today. How through her enduring loss of her daughter, she has finally found whats most important: her peace. Cynthia Doucettes compelling memoir shares such deep, intense, emotional family struggles and triumphs. The connection I felt with Cynthia and her daughter, Candice was unreal. It felt as though Candices spirit was with me as I read her life story. Candice spoke through the words of her mother. I could feel Candices happiness, her depression, her pain, and her anger. In this story of her tragic death and the wonderful family she left behind, I found myself becoming a part of the Doucette family, as I can relate to the emotional roller coasters theyve endured. Cynthias outlook on her familys ups and downs is so real and by far one of the most amazing stories Ive ever read. Cynthia is an inspirational author, a role model, a woman who had enough faith, love and strength to put her familys story out for the world. She sacrificed her and her familys privacy to help others in need of answers and guidance in times of crisis. This book clearly proves that this can happen to any family. -Rebecca Batchelder-
