Book excerpt: SHAHIN OF SHIRAZ The Jewish Sufi Poet of the Time of Hafiz SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Maulana Shahin of Shiraz was a 14th century Jewish Persian Poet who composed only masnavis in the Persian language but written in the Hebrew script. He was alive in his birthplace of Shiraz during the reign of the Il-khanid sultan of Baghdad Abu Said (1316-1335) at whose court was Obeyd Zakani and Khaju Kermani. He is said to have greatly admired three great masnavi writers who came before him, Firdausi, Nizami and Rumi and to have been much influenced by Sufism. It is quite possible that although he would have lived in the large Jewish quarter of Shiraz at the time, with the liberality that existed in that city of about 100,000 (within the walls and another 100,000 outside) he would most likely have come into contact with other poets living there including Hafiz (see Appendix), Obeyd Zakani, Khaju Kermani and Ruh Attar and Jahan Khatun. His first epic masnavi Musa-Nama, 'The Book of Moses' (10,000 couplets) was composed in 1327 and he followed that with Ardashir-Nama, 'The Book of Ardashir and Esther' (9000 couplets) six years later. It would be another 25 years for his last masterpiece to appear in 1358, his Bereshit-Nama, 'Book of Genesis' (8,700 couplets). In his 'Book of Moses' (see cover illustration) he turns Moses into an epic hero like those in Firdausi's Shah-Nama that seems to have been a great influence on him. He should be known as one of the great masnavi Sufi poets of Iran. The form of the masnavi has been kept. Introduction: The Life, Times & Works of Shahin of Shiraz, APPENDIX: Shahin of Shiraz in Paul Smith's 'Hafiz of Shiraz', 3 vols. 2012. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" Illustrated, 126 pages COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. Book excerpt: MAHSATI THE GREAT, OUTRAGEOUS, FEMALE, SUFI POET Selected Poems (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith We know little of Mahsati Ganjavi's life (1098-1185) except that she lived in Ganjeh when Sultan Sanjar reigned and as she was a poet at his court she would have known Anvari. She was a court, dervish and ribald poet. She knew Nizami (she is said to have been buried in his mausoleum) and Omar Khayyam... and composed in the ruba'i form and must be considered not only a master of that form but also to have helped to revolutionize it. She also composed ghazals but few have come down to us today (one is included here). She was an influence on perhaps Iran's greatest female poet Jahan Khatun of Shiraz and Iran's greatest satirist Obeyd Zakani. She was famous and also infamous for her truly liberated behaviour. Included in the Introduction are her life, times and a history of the ruba'i and examples by its greatest exponents. Selected Bibliography. Appendix on the Latest News on her. This is by far the largest collection of her poems translated into English. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these immortal, courageous four-line poems. Book excerpt: F A I Z I Sufi Poet Laureate of Akbar Selected Poems (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction by Paul Smith The work of Faizi (1547-1595), marks the beginning of the golden age of Indian literature in Persian. This Sufi poet-laureate of Akbar assisted him in reforms that were aimed at reconciling Indians of different faiths. In his best known poem 'Nal and Daman' he reworks a story from the Mahabharata. Faizi also wrote works on philosophy, philology, mathematics, medicine, and the history of religion. Faizi's poems are qasidas, ghazals, and ruba'is that were composed in the traditions of classical Persian poetry and are translated here in the correct form for the first time. His ghazals show the influence of Hafiz and Jami and Fighani and are early examples of the 'Indian Style'. Book excerpt: AHMED YESEVI FIRST TURKISH SUFI POET Selected Poems (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Ahmed Yesevi, born in Sayram in 1093, and died in 1166 in Hazrat-e Turkestan, (both cities now in Kazakhstan), was a Turkish poet and Sufi or Dervish who exerted a powerful influence on the development of mystical orders throughout the Turkish-speaking world. Yesevi is the earliest known Turkish poet who composed poetry in an early Turkish dialect, Chagatai. He was a pioneer of popular mysticism, founded the first Turkish order, (the Yeseviye), that quickly spread over the Turkish-speaking areas. Yesevi had numerous students/followers in the region. His poems created a new genre of mystical folk poetry in Central Asia and influenced many Sufi/Dervish poets including 'Attar, Rumi, Hafiz (who both knew Turkish) and Yunus Emre. The book of his poems, the Divan-e Hikmet (Book of Wisdom), consists mainly of gazels and murabbas (foursomes), Kosmos (robi'as srung together) and munajat (prayers). All are generously represented in this translation in the correct forms for the first time in English. Introduction: On Turkish & Turkish Sufi Poetry & The Life & Times & Poetry of Ahmed Yesevi, On the Gazel in Turkish Sufi Poetry, Selected Bibliography. Book excerpt: AL-MA'ARRI: SUFI & PHILOSOPHER Selected Poems (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Born in Ma'arra, south of Aleppo in Syria in 973 A.D., he achieved fame as one of greatest of Arab poets. Al-Ma'arri was stricken with smallpox when four and became blind. His early poems in ruba'i form gained great popularity as did his other poems. As he grew older, he was able to travel to Aleppo, Antioch and other Syrian cities. He spent months at Baghdad, then the centre of learning and poetry, leaving to return to his native town. There he created the Luzumiyyat, a famous collection of 1592 poems. In his passionate hatred of the vile world and all the material manifestations of life, he was like a dervish dancing in sheer bewilderment; a holy man, melting in tears before the distorted image of Divinity. In his aloofness, as in the purity of his spirit, his ecstatic negations can only be translated in terms of the Sufism. If others have symbolised the Divinity in wine, he did it in Reason, which is the living oracle of the Soul; he embraced Divinity under the cover of a philosophy of extinction. Here is a large selection of poems in all the forms in the correct rhyme. Introduction: The Life and Works of al Ma'arri, The Ruba'i & Qit'a, Ghazal & Qasida. Selected Bibliography. Large Print (18pt), Large Format (8" x 10"). 183 pages. Book excerpt: SHAH ABDUL LATIF Sufi Sindhi Master Poet Selected Poems (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Shah Abdul Latif (1689-1752) was a Sufi Master and is considered by many to be the greatest poet of the Sindhi language. His book of poetry is called the Risalo. His shrine is located in Bhit and attracts hundreds of pilgrims every day. He is the most famous Sindhi poet and Sufi. He was not just adored for poetry, people from far and near respected and loved him as a Spiritual Master. He composed dohas (self-contained strict-rhyming couplets popular with poet-saints of India like Kabir, Surdas, Tukaram) and freed it from the chain of two lines, extending it to even five or six couplets, often with irregular rhyme structures. He also introduced one more string to the tambura, and founded a new tradition in music based on the synthesis of high art and folk art. He told the basic principles of Sufism in his poetry, often using folktales about human love such as that of Sasui and Punhu, becoming a bridge to Divine Love.
