Download or read book SADCC Beyond Transportation written by Tom Østergaard and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1989 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on economic co-operation in southern Africa which looks to the future. The first ten years of the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference have been mainly devoted to co-operation in transport and communications, not least to reduce dependence on apartheid South Africa. In order to move to an offensive to combat underdevelopment, SADCC has recognized the need to move into intra-regional trade and industrialization. Tom Oestergaard's study is an analysis of the obstacles which have to be overcome, and the minimum of changes that the SADCC countries must agree on to achieve balanced and co-ordinated development. fact that Southern Africa is overwhelmingly oriented to foreign markets and suppliers, and the lack of co-ordination which is heightened by the often diverse role of transnational corporations, banks, and donor agencies. illustration by the study of the tractor industry and SADCC. It serves to illuminate and dramatize the constraints, but also the gains to be made if co-ordination can be made a reality.

Book Synopsis Transfrontier Conservation in Africa by : Maano Ramutsindela
Download or read book Transfrontier Conservation in Africa written by Maano Ramutsindela and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transfrontier conservation is a global concept which encompasses the protection of biodiversity spanning the borders of two or more countries in ways that support local economic development, international relations and peace. Nowhere is this more relevant but highly debatable than in Africa, which is home to a third of the world's terrestrial biodiversity, while at the same time hosting its poorest nations. This is one of the first books to account for the emergence of transfrontier conservation in Africa against international experiences in bioregional planning. The roles of the state and local populations are analysed, as well as the ecological, socio-economic and political implications.

Book excerpt: The 1990 Annual Consultative Conference put the spotlight on issues of human resources development. The Conference Theme: Human Resources: A Primary Factor in Development, clearly acknowledged that development of the region's human capital to its fullest potential, was a prerequisite for tackling the socio-economic problems of SADCC member States. Indeed, SADCC has to significantly increase the productivity of its people by providing better education, skills, technology, and above all, by creating a supportive environment for the optimal utilisation of people's skills, creativity and enterprise. The Conference took a step further, from last year's theme, to link issues of human development and freedom with those of enterprise, investment and production.

Book excerpt: Seven country case studies of fish marketing and distribution patterns are presented in this collection. Country studies of Burundi, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe were prepared in accordance with a recommendation of the Technical Consultation on Aquaculture and Human Nutrition (Maseru, Lesotho, 5-8 June 1989). The selected countries represent a considerable range of circumstances in terms of such dimensions as territorial extent, access to marine or freshwater resources, domestic production capcities, and traditions of fisheries and fish consumption. An introductory overview chapter provides a summary account based on the format used for each of the case presentations, and sets out general recommendations for further development action on a region-wide basis.

Book Synopsis Regionalism in Africa by : Daniel C Bach
Download or read book Regionalism in Africa written by Daniel C Bach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa, which was not long ago discarded as a hopeless and irrelevant region, has become a new 'frontier' for global trade, investment and the conduct of international relations. This book surveys the socio-economic, intellectual and security related dimensions of African regionalisms since the turn of the 20th century. It argues that the continent deserves to be considered as a crucible for conceptualizing and contextualizing the ongoing influence of colonial policies, the emergence of specific integration and security cultures, the spread of cross-border regionalisation processes at the expense of region-building, the interplay between territory, space and trans-state networks, and the intrinsic ambivalence of global frontier narratives. This is emphasized through the identification of distinctive 'threads' of regionalism which, by focusing on genealogies, trajectories and ideals, transcend the binary divide between old and new regionalisms. In doing so, the book opens new perspectives not only on Africa in international relations, but also Africa’s own international relations. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars of African politics, African history, regionalism, comparative regionalism, and more broadly to international political economy, international relations and global and regional governance.
