Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the conceptual position of women in early India, specifically in the Vedic and early epic periods (c.1500-200 BCE), and it seeks to make contributions both to Indology and to gender studies. By focusing on a single female role--the activities of the "Sacrificer's Wife" in solemn ritual--and by extracting the rich materials on her role from the voluminous technical ritual manuals, the author isolates a set of conceptual functions the wife fills in ritual practice. These functions can then be observed in other cultural institutions in which women participate--particularly the system of hospitality and gift exchange that regulated the relations between mutually obligated strangers in ancient India and the system of marital exchange. Besides filling a large gap in our understanding of ancient India, this work makes a general contribution to the study of women and gender, not merely by supplying information about a place and time poorly represented in these studies, but also by suggesting some methodologies involving sensitivity to language and linguistic analysis to employ in approaching women and gender in other ancient cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents revised papers delivered at the 1998 and 1999 Taubes Minerva Center for Religious Anthropology conferences. The papers from the 1998 conference discuss the role of sacrifice in religious experience from a comparative perspective. Those from the second conference examine alternatives to sacrifice. The first theme has been much elaborated in recent scholarship, and the essays here participate in that on-going inquiry. The second theme has been less explored, and the goal of this volume is to stimulate examination of the topic by offering a set of test cases. In both sections of the volume a wide variety of religious traditions are considered. The essays show that in spite of the inclination we may sometimes have to consider sacrifice part of the idolatrous past, long overcome, it remains a persistent and meaningful part of religious experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam is the only biblical religion that still practices animal sacrifice. Indeed, every year more than a million animals are shipped to Mecca from all over the world to be slaughtered during the Muslim Hajj. This multi-disciplinary volume is the first to examine the physical foundations of this practice and the significance of the ritual. Brannon Wheeler uses both textual analysis and various types of material evidence to gain insight into the role of animal sacrifice in Islam. He provides a 'thick description' of the elaborate camel sacrifice performed by Muhammad, which serves as the model for future Hajj sacrifices. Wheeler integrates biblical and classical Arabic sources with evidence from zooarchaeology and the rock art of ancient Arabia to gain insight into an event that reportedly occurred 1400 years ago. His book encourages a more nuanced and expansive conception of “sacrifice” in the history of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A father struggles to raise his daughter right as she comes of age in the 1960s in this moving conclusion to a multi-generational family trilogy. Simon Hagan’s life has been portrayed over several decades in Annette Valentine’s novels Eastbound From Flagstaff and Down to the Potter’s House. In Sufficient Sacrifice, he bears the burden of responsibility to give his child, Alexandra, the foundational strength she needs to navigate the bumpy road of her youthful years and the proverbial wings she needs to fly against the winds of young adulthood. With the goal of Sufficient Sacrifice elevating the power of a father’s love for his child, the story poses the question of whether Simon’s influence has diminished over time or been compromised by the eroding push of a determined woman. Simon, however, makes the necessary sacrifices. Having given all he had to give, Sufficient Sacrifice uniquely portrays his stunning and triumphant victory over Alexandra’s confusion and rebellion. The results land her on higher ground, enabling her to be more than conqueror. “Excellent!! An absolute treasure that recounts the warm and sometimes harsh realities of a family striving to maintain a high standard of living amidst currents of mediocrity.” —Becky Hadden Wise, educator, Carver Middle School, Spartanburg, South Carolina

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises three tales written in "classical" verse (i.e., strict rhythms and rhyme.) Although in the form of fairy tales and fables, they deal with important social and historic issues. "A Tale of Dancing Chair" decries racial discrimination and expounds the idea that, regardless of outside help, success comes to those who don't shy away from hard work, are willing and able to use creative potential to the fullest, and stand up to bigotry, injustice, and unfair judgement. "A Tale of Captive Puffins . . ." reflects upon events in the history of Russian/Soviet Jewry in the twentieth Century. To recognize historic prototypes of the fable's characters, one should read up on history of Tsarist Russia and Soviet Union, Weimar and Nazi Germany. However, it is not a prerequisite: the Tale is intended to trigger reader's interest in those chapters of history. "A Tale of Boy Nightingale . . . " is intended to make dents in prejudices against unconventional" (gay and lesbian) families. It proclaims love, respect, and loyalty as traits identifying and holding together families, asserts that friendship between children from different families is greatest hope and strongest weapon in the struggle against prejudices still prevalent in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Hebrew Bible's numerous laws about sacrificial procedure to understand the significance of gender in sacrificial rituals and the reasons that gender distinctions are so vital in these acts. Gender selection of both victims and participants is an intrinsic aspect of the nature and purpose of each rite, affecting its form and function, as well as its legitimacy. Sacrifice and Gender in Biblical Law considers the laws of the firstborn, the rite of the red cow, laws of slaughter, rituals of purification, and other offerings. It shows that these laws regulate material wealth and contribute to the construction of social roles.

Book excerpt: At an excavation of the Great Aztec Temple in Mexico City, amid carvings of skulls and a dismembered warrior goddess, David Carrasco stood before a container filled with the decorated bones of infants and children. It was the site of a massive human sacrifice, and for Carrasco the center of fiercely provocative questions: If ritual violence against humans was a profound necessity for the Aztecs in their capital city, is it central to the construction of social order and the authority of city states? Is civilization built on violence? In City of Sacrifice,Carrasco chronicles the fascinating story of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, investigating Aztec religious practices and demonstrating that religious violence was integral to urbanization; the city itself was a temple to the gods. That Mexico City, the largest city on earth, was built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, is a point Carrasco poignantly considers in his comparison of urban life from antiquity to modernity. Majestic in scope, City of Sacrifice illuminates not only the rich history of a major Meso american city but also the inseparability of two passionate human impulses: urbanization and religious engagement. It has much to tell us about many familiar events in our own time, from suicide bombings in Tel Aviv to rape and murder in the Balkans.

Book excerpt: A shockingly true account of a woman living part of her teenage years and young adulthood as a Muslim wife and eventually became part of a 'Harem' inside of one of the most influential underground cults in the United States. Assuming the pen name of Ruby Garnett at the request of her family, the author recounts the circumstances that led her to eventually be enticed by the religious extremist dogma of one of the most charismatic, influential underground cult leaders Black America has seen since since the likes of Father Divine... Garnett has a candidly-intimate conversation with the reader about her state of mind from beginning to end. She wrote "Soul Sacrifice" for the children that came forward to let someone know about the sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of Nuwabian cult leader Malachi York. Despite the threats, harrassment and lack of support (from some of their own brainwashed parents), these brave survivors of abuse are the reason this story needs to be heard...
