Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Rhetoric: Or, the Art of Rhetoric as Applied to the Preaching of the Word of God A priest should for every reason be an educated man; and, bound as he is by his Ministry to teach and preach, Rhetoric forms an essential part of his education. As in the Old Law, so also in the New, "The lips of the Priest shall keep knowledge, and they shall seek the law at his mouth, because he is the Angel of the Lord of Hosts" (Mai ii.7). Like other arts, Rhetoric aims at perfection within its own sphere, but, like them too, it adapts itself to the capacity of the learner, and the use he may have to make of it. Hence, in learning Rhetoric the student is to take account of his own capacity in the first place, and then keep constantly in view the occasions he may have for exercising, and displaying, the proficiency he will have attained. Religion, it must be said, furnishes the most elevated subjects for the application of Rhetoric, and the Christian pulpit has presented to public admiration, in every age, its Preachers, as amongst the most distinguished orators of their day. Book Synopsis The Imperative of Preaching by : John Carrick
Download or read book The Imperative of Preaching written by John Carrick and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believing that preaching remains of vital importance today, John Carrick argues that its effectiveness can be greatly enhanced if preachers make use of the patterns of communication laid down by God in Scripture for their instruction. He sees in the Bible a sacred rhetoric which the apostles and prophets, and Christ himself, used to awaken, move and persuade their hearers. While depending on the power of the Spirit, the preacher should not neglect any help which Scripture affords. Sacred rhetoric is based essentially on statements and commands (called in grammar the indicative and the imperative), which, together with exclamations and questions, are of immense significance in the preaching of the Word. Abundant examples from Scripture and from the preaching of such men as Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, Samuel Davies, Asahel Nettleton and Martyn Lloyd-Jones, demonstrate Carrick's case. Insisting on the critical importance of applying, as well as explaining, the truth of Scripture, Carrick provides an effective critique of redemptive-historical preaching, arguing that this approach seriously neglects the application of the Word of God.
Book Synopsis Manual of Sacred Rhetoric by : Reverend Bernard Feeney
Download or read book Manual of Sacred Rhetoric written by Reverend Bernard Feeney and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on 1901 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There must be art in the doing of any work in which complex means have to be employed to do it well; for art is the skillful use of such means, whether the work be a kitchen table or an epic poem. Now, Preaching relying on divine help, undertakes a very difficult and complicated work, namely, to move the will of another from a state of apathy or opposition to activity in a definite direction. To do this, several means have to be employed: obstacles and prepossessions have to be removed; interest has to be awakened; the intellect has to be enlightened by exposition and illustration; the feelings have to be aroused and enlisted; the will itself has to be brought under the direct influence of motives calculated to determine it to action. Book Synopsis Sacred Rhetoric by : Michael Pasquarello III
Download or read book Sacred Rhetoric written by Michael Pasquarello III and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern approaches to preaching today are largely fixated on "how-to's"--how to make preaching more relevant, more interesting, more entertaining. Michael Pasquarello suggests that this fixation may stem from a preaching imagination more beholden to technical, scientific reason than theological wisdom. Rather than devising new techniques or strategies for effective speaking, Pasquarello offers something more salutary--portraits of ten exemplary preachers from the Christian tradition.Included in Pasquarello's gallery are Augustine of Hippo, Gregory the Great, Benedict, Bernard of Clairvaux, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, Erasmus, Hugh Latimer, Martin Luther, and John Calvin. These excellent preachers conceived of Christian speech as a unique theological practice learned through prayerful attention to the Bible and aimed at communion with God.Sacred Rhetoric invites readers to join an extended conversation with the past in order to become faithful preachers of the gospel in a post-Christian society. Preachers, seminarians, and students of Christian history will find much to learn from Pasquarello's fresh perspective and passion for the past.
