They have been found, by the many tests of comparative popularity, to be those which are most wanted - most looked for in a sepa rate volume. Two or three of the Sacred Poems which follow have never before been included in a volume. Written in mature years, they must stand simply on their merits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Poetry Mom of the following poems, as well as others which I have written but not here reprinted, have been long before the public, and many of them extensively circulated in selections of sacred poetry, both in this country and in America, but in a collected form they have for years been out of print. Believing that it is important for a writer to learn to blot, I have shortened some of them from what they were in the former editions, corrected others, and some which have been before printed I have altogether suppressed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unseen Realities: Sacred Poems It is a privilege to be asked to write a word of introduction and appreciation to this small volume. The poems it contains are veritable heart-throbs. Each of them has its birth in a direct message from God to the soul of the gifted writer, to whom the Christian Church is already greatly indebted for her songs of the Kingdom. In these, which she now sends forth, deep answers unto deep, as is ever the case when God and the soul are in communion; and many will doubtless find their own experiences interpreted here in lines of haunting sweetness and abiding strength. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First-Fruits of Sacred Song The principal motive that has led to the publication of these Poems is a desire to aid in exciting a deeper practical interest in tho profound truths of our living Christianity. It must be admitted that, while those truths are accepted by every branch of the Church of Christ, their power over the heart and life is, to a great extent, in abeyance. Christians are not living in "the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace," "filled with the Spirit: " hence the necessity that they be stirred up to a view of their privileges as "sons and daughters" of the "King eternal, immortal, invisible." "First-fruits" imply a harvest. If the quality of the former be fine the latter may be anticipated with joy. But both first-fruits and harvest of grain are things in a measure realised. This cannot be predicated of the Muse. Still, the quality of poetical first-fruits may foretoken the quality of the unknown harvest. Is it a good foretoken in the following pages'? The reader must judge. There is some, nay much, excellent grain of God's own revealed truth in them. Let the chaff of imperfect expression be scattered, and that pure grain realised. This is the Author's anxious desire and prayer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Job: And Other Sacred Poems To my private tastes only, without consideration of other results from my labour, this rhymed edition of Job has been due, and which in its present form is the outcome of a rigid revision of a former edition. In undertaking this task, my purpose was to preserve, as well as I could, the literal words of the Scripture text. This, by transposition and liberal use of synonyms, I have endeavoured to accomplish so as to make, to the ordinary reader, my work seem as familiar as the Bible version, with the lines appearing to fall accidentally into rhyme. In my rigid adherence to this end, I have, as well as I was able, avoided escaping the difficulties of my task by the easier mode of paraphrasing. The intelligent reader will readily perceive how greatly the difficulties of smooth versification were increased thereby. At the outset of my task, my design was to make my work reflect the text of the Authorised Version, but, in passages of hopeless obscurity there, I have used the more palpable renderings of the Revised Version and of Davidson's Commentary.
