Book excerpt: Unknown to most outside observers, from the earliest days of embryonic stem cell research through today's latest developments, Christian theologians have been actively involved with leading laboratory research scientists to determine the ethical implications of stem cell research. And contrary to popular expectation, these Christians have been courageously advocating in favor of research. Three of these dynamic theologians tell their story in Sacred Cells? Why Christians Should Support Stem Cell Research. Sacred Cells? takes readers through the twists and turns of stem cell development, providing a brief history of the science and an overview of the competing ethical frameworks people use in approaching the heated debate. Each new scientific advance, from the cloning of Dolly the sheep to the use of engineered cells in humans, had to be carefully considered before proceeding. Rejecting the widely held belief that the ethics of stem cell research turn on the moral status of the embryo, the authors carefully weigh a diversity of ethical problems. Ultimately, they embrace stem cell research and the prospect of increased health and well being it offers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the 1917 Revolution in Russia, the Bosheviks launched a massive assault on religion. Although we know a great deal about how the Bolsheviks went about doing this&—propaganda, persecution of clergy and laity, seizing church property&—scholars have not devoted much attention to the other side of the story: the people who were being persecuted and how they responded to their persecutors. Glennys Young shows how ordinary Russian peasants devised ways of asserting their religious faith during the difficult period of New Economic Policy, 1921&–28, when the Party-state was ideologically obsessed with eradicating religion. Faced with persecution, torture, and the creation of antireligious organizations such as the League of the Godless, Orthodox clergy and laity organized themselves against the Bolsheviks. They revived factional politics, even using the village soviets, the intended cornerstone of Soviet power in the countryside, to defend their religious interests. When they achieved some degree of success in their resistance, the Bosheviks were forced to respond and adapt their strategies&—a conclusion that scholars have not put forward previously. Based on extensive research in archives and published sources, Young's book will force historians of Soviet Russia to confront religious issues as central to rural politics. Her work also draws upon cultural anthropology and theories of peasant politics, making it of great interest to any scholars studying the processes of secularization and desacralization in other cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is not a cakewalk for any of us. We each have our individual sufferings and challenges in life, and we each must endure vital questions that have no certain answers. Why are we here? Where is God when we need him? How do our lives matter in the long run? Our science cannot help us with such questions, but theology can. And that's what this book has to offer. This book's theology is based on an arresting theory about God. Turning to modern physics, it finds God in the origin of the universe and in the innermost foundations of the natural world. The universe flowed from his nature, but his nature was not perfect, which is why we have an imperfect world where bad things happen to good people. And yet we also find this God deep within us, enabling us to confront our suffering with resilience and grace. The evil in the world has power, but we have power too, the power from our inner God to hold steady against the slings and arrows of our misfortunes. The theology presented here builds on the discoveries of particle physics and quantum mechanics about the foundational building blocks and forces in all of creation. These reveal the abounding spirit and purposes of the Creator--a spirit that empowers us and instills in us purposes we can embrace and foster. It may seem we are essentially on our own as we navigate through life, but in this book's theology, God is always and everywhere with us and in us.

Book excerpt: Anyone seeking a deeper understanding of human spirituality will find something of value in Michael Washburn's new book. Drawing on a rich variety of psychoanalytic, Jungian, and existential-phenomenological sources and on both Western and Asian spiritual texts, Embodied Spirituality in a Sacred World provides a theoretical foundation for the idea that human development follows a spiral path. Washburn shows that ego development early in life requires us to turn our backs on original sources of our existence and, therefore, that spiritual development later in life requires us to spiral back to these sources on the way to whole-psyche integration. He elucidates the underlying causes and pivotal events that set development on its spiral course and traces six major dimensions of experience as they unfold along the spiral path: the unconscious, the energy system, the ego system, the perceived other, the experiential body, and the life-world. In providing a theoretical foundation for the idea of the spiral path, Washburn defends the idea against its critics and helps explain why the idea has been compelling to so many people in diverse traditions.

This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tantra Yoga is actually a spiritual teaching that was developed based on a deep understanding of the reality of the self, the universe and God. This teaching guides spiritual learners to be able to step into Divine Consciousness, with the estuary of liberation of the soul from all the roots of sorrow. In Tantra Yoga, there are systems and methods that lead to the purification of the soul from all karmic residues, bad traces of trauma and mental wounds, angkara murka, illusions and entanglements of inharmonious energies. Unfortunately, a lot of confusion has developed regarding Tantra. In the West, there are many neo-tantras that make sexuality the axis of teaching. This triggers people to associate Tantra with sexuality. In other parts of the Earth, such as in Nusantara, Tantra is often associated with brutal rituals that are considered as the application of the teachings of Panca Makara. Legendary figures from Nusantara such as Adityawarman, Sri Kertanegara and Calon Arang are often mentioned as practitioners of Tantra, specifically Bhairawi Tantra, with the habit of holding following rituals that undoubtedly make people in the modern era shake their heads: eating corpses, binge alcoholic drinking and sex parties, or performing dances. mystic naked in the grave. This book was actually written to answer all the confusion and at the same time straighten the slander against the legendary figures of Nusantara. In this book, Tantric practices are explained which are actually divine, simple and effective, to lead to enlightenment and a life full of happiness. Tantric practice includes dhyana, pranayama, samadhi, mantra, yantra and others. The author of this book, Setyo Hajar Dewantoro is a practitioner of Tantra as a path of stillness mindfulness that leads to connectedness as well asand great oneness with Sang Hyang Atman/True SelfDivine Self and Brahman/God Almighty. The readers are invited to dive into Tantra as a teaching of spiritual sciences as well asand a holistic method for the transformation of the soul towards purity, wisdom and complete perfect empowerment.
