Book excerpt: “A graphic account of the horrors, the brutality and sometimes wanton destruction of warfare, particularly of civil war.” —Charleston (SC) Post and Courier In the first reissue of these documents since 1865, A City Laid Waste captures in riveting detail the destruction of South Carolina’s capital city. William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870), a native South Carolinian and one of the nation’s foremost men of letters, was in Columbia and witnessed firsthand the city’s capture and destruction. A renowned novelist and poet, who was also an experienced journalist and historian, Simms deftly recorded the events of February 1865 in a series of eyewitness accounts published in the first ten issues of the Columbia Phoenix and reprinted here. His record of burned buildings constitutes the most authoritative information available on the extent of the damage. Simms historian David Aiken provides a historical and literary context for Simms’s reportage. In his introduction Aiken clarifies the significance of Simms’s articles and draws attention to factors most important for understanding the occupation’s impact on the city of Columbia. “A shrewd viewer of the war scene in Columbia, famed Southern writer William Gilmore Simms published stinging, courageous exposés of the doings of the Northern forces, even when threatened with arrest. The restoration of his candid firsthand accounts of the destruction wrought by Sherman’s forces against the South Carolina capitol and its inhabitants is a great service to all who study and appreciate Southern history and literature.” —James Everett Kibler, author of Our Fathers’ Fields

Book excerpt: In late 1864 and early 1865, 62,000 battle-hardened Northern soldiers, under the command of William Tecumseh Sherman, marched through Georgia and South Carolina, destroying everything in their path. Sherman had promised that he would "make Georgia howl" and "punish South Carolina as she deserves" for her "sins" against the Union. In the name of "destroying slavery" and with the blessings of Abraham Lincoln, Sherman's troops destroyed civilian homes, desecrated graves, raped and murdered helpless women and children, and left thousands, both White and Black, in their wake to forage through the destruction for what food they could find. This book details the horrors experienced by the citizens of Columbia, South Carolina at the hands of their Northern invaders. Also included is the eyewitness account of Dr. Daniel H. Trezevant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into who burned South Carolina's capital in 1865 Who burned South Carolina's capital city on February 17, 1865? Even before the embers had finished smoldering, Confederates and Federals accused each other of starting the blaze, igniting a controversy that has raged for more than a century. Marion B. Lucas sifts through official reports, newspapers, and eyewitness accounts, and the evidence he amasses debunks many of the myths surrounding the tragedy. Rather than writing a melodrama with clear heroes and villains, Lucas tells a more complex and more human story that details the fear, confusion, and disorder that accompanied the end of a brutal war. Lucas traces the damage not to a single blaze but to a series of fires—preceded by an equally unfortunate series of military and civilian blunders—that included the burning of cotton bales by fleeing Confederate soldiers. This edition includes a new foreword by Anne Sarah Rubin, professor of history at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the author of Through the Heart of Dixie: Sherman's March and America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, cities, houses, forests, and soldiers’ bodies were transformed into “dead heaps of ruins,” novel sights in the southern landscape. How did this happen, and why? And what did Americans—northern and southern, black and white, male and female—make of this proliferation of ruins? Ruin Nation is the first book to bring together environmental and cultural histories to consider the evocative power of ruination as an imagined state, an act of destruction, and a process of change. Megan Kate Nelson examines the narratives and images that Americans produced as they confronted the war’s destructiveness. Architectural ruins—cities and houses—dominated the stories that soldiers and civilians told about the “savage” behavior of men and the invasions of domestic privacy. The ruins of living things—trees and bodies—also provoked discussion and debate. People who witnessed forests and men being blown apart were plagued by anxieties about the impact of wartime technologies on nature and on individual identities. The obliteration of cities, houses, trees, and men was a shared experience. Nelson shows that this is one of the ironies of the war’s ruination—in a time of the most extreme national divisiveness people found common ground as they considered the war’s costs. And yet, very few of these ruins still exist, suggesting that the destructive practices that dominated the experiences of Americans during the Civil War have been erased from our national consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic developments unfolded during the first months of 1865 that brought America's bloody Civil War to a swift climax. As the Confederacy crumbled under the Union army's relentless "hammering," Federal armies marched on the Rebels' remaining bastions in Alabama, the Carolinas, and Virginia. General William T. Sherman's battle-hardened army conducted a punitive campaign against the seat of the Rebellion, South Carolina, while General-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant sought to break the months-long siege at Petersburg, defended by Robert E. Lee's starving Army of Northern Virginia. In Richmond, Confederate President Jefferson Davis struggled to hold together his unraveling nation while simultaneously sanctioning diplomatic overtures to bid for peace. Meanwhile, President Abraham Lincoln took steps to end slavery in the United States forever. Their Last Full Measure relates these thrilling events, which followed one on the heels of another, from the battles ending the Petersburg siege and forcing Lee's surrender at Appomattox to the destruction of South Carolina's capital, the assassination of Lincoln, and the intensive manhunt for his killer. The fast-paced narrative braids the disparate events into a compelling account that includes powerful armies; leaders civil and military, flawed and splendid; and ordinary people, black and white, struggling to survive in the war's wreckage.
