Book Synopsis Borneo Studies in History, Society and Culture by : Victor T. King
Download or read book Borneo Studies in History, Society and Culture written by Victor T. King and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is the first major review of what has been achieved in Borneo Studies to date. Chapters in this book situate research on Borneo within the general disciplinary fields of the social sciences, with the weight of attention devoted to anthropological research and related fields such as development studies, gender studies, environmental studies, social policy studies and cultural studies. Some of the chapters in this book are extended versions of presentations at the Borneo Research Council’s international conference hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam in June 2012 and a Borneo Studies workshop organised in Brunei in 2012. The volume examines some of the major debates and controversies in Borneo Studies, including those which have served to connect post-war research on Borneo to wider scholarship. It also assesses some of the more recent contributions and interests of locally based researchers in universities and other institutions in Borneo itself. The major strength of the book is the inclusion of a substantial amount of research undertaken by scholars working and teaching within the Southeast Asian region. In particular there is an examination of research materials published in the vernacular, notably the outpouring of work published in Indonesian by the Institut Dayakologi in Pontianak. In doing so, the book also addresses the urgent matters which have not received the attention they deserve, specifically subjects, themes and issues that have already been covered but require further contemplation, elaboration and research, and the scope for disciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration in Borneo Studies. The book is a valuable resource and reference work for students and researchers interested in social science scholarship on Borneo, and for those with wider interests in Indonesia and Malaysia, and in the Southeast Asian region.

Book Synopsis Marketing of Tourism Experiences by : Noel Scott
Download or read book Marketing of Tourism Experiences written by Noel Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of the current theory and practice of experiential tourism and how it is marketed. Many societies today are characterised by widespread individual wealth of an order previously confined to the elite with the consequence that ownership of ‘ordinary’ physical goods is no longer a distinguishing factor. Instead people are now seeking the ‘extraordinary’ with examples being bodies enhanced through surgery, personal fitness trainers, and, in the case of leisure and tourism, seeking unique and unusual places to visit and activities to undertake. This trend manifests in the increasing consumption of services and the addition of experiential elements to physical goods by businesses aware of societal changes. The trend is enhanced by rapidly changing technology and economic production methods providing new sectors of the world’s population with access to the consumption experiences that are repeatedly featured in the media. This is the experience economy, characterised by a search by consumers for fantasies, feelings, and fun. This book was based on a special issue of Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Mangement.

Book Synopsis Staging Indigenous Heritage by : Yunci Cai
Download or read book Staging Indigenous Heritage written by Yunci Cai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staging Indigenous Heritage examines the cultural politics of four Indigenous cultural villages in Malaysia. Demonstrating that such villages are often beset with the politics of brokerage and representation, the book shows that this reinforces a culture of dependency on the brokers. By critically examining the relationship between Indigenous tourism and development through the establishment of Indigenous cultural villages, the book addresses the complexities of adopting the ‘culture for development’ paradigm as a developmental strategy. Demonstrating that the opportunities for self-representation and self-determination can become entwined with the politics of brokerage and the contradictory dualism of culture, it becomes clear that this can both facilitate and compromise their intended outcomes. Challenging the simplistic conceptualisation of Indigenous communities as harmonious and unified wholes, the book shows how Indigenous cultures are actively forged, struggled over, and negotiated in contemporary Malaysia. Confronting the largely positive rhetoric in current discourses on the benefits of community-based cultural projects, Staging Indigenous Heritage should be essential reading for academics and students in the fields of museum studies, cultural heritage studies, Indigenous studies, development studies, tourism, anthropology, and geography. The book should also be of interest to museum and heritage professionals around the world.
Download or read book Hasan-I-Sabah written by James Wasserman and published by Ibis Press. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication includes the first English translation of the 1310 biography of Hasan-i-Sabah by Rashid al-Din: The Biography of Our Master (Sar-Guzasht-i-Sayyidna) Hasan-i-Sabah was born in northern Persia around 1050 and died in 1124. He was an Ismaili missionary (or dai) who founded the Nizari Ismailis after the usurpation of the Fatimid Imamate by the military dictator of Egypt. It may be said that Hasan founded and operated the world's most successful mystical secret society, while building a political territory in which to maintain his independence. The small empire he created would be home to him, his followers, and their descendants for 166 years. Today, under the leadership of the Aga Khan, the Nizari Ismailis are one of the preeminent Muslim sects in the world, numbering some twenty million members in twenty-five countries. The medieval Nizaris were also known as Assassins or Hashishim. They became embedded in European consciousness because of their contact with the Knights Templar, and other Crusaders and visitors to the Near East. Several Europeans reported back with strange (and largely false) tales of the Assassins. In the fourteenth century, they were widely popularized by the famed Venetian traveler and writer Marco Polo in The Travels of Marco Polo. He added a whole new level of myth in his account of the sect (included in this volume along with extensive commentary). Of greatest interest is the idea that the Assassins were the spiritual initiators of the Knights Templar. If this is true, Hasan-i-Sabah would be in part responsible for the European Renaissance that would reclaim the spiritual centrality of the Hermetic writings and the Gnostic/Esoteric trends that continue to this day. Essential reading for an understanding of modern esoteric secret societies and today's headlines coming from the Middle East. Includes 9 maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the archaeological research and the development carried out at the site of Bukit Tengkorak in Semporna, Sabah from 1994 to 2017. Archaeological findings from Bukit Tengkorak have shown that the site is an important Neolithic site in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, dated around 3,000 years ago. Archaeological surveys and excavations at Bukit Tengkorak had revealed that the site is very rich in archaeological evidence and deposits such as pottery, stone tools, and food remains. Scientific studies conducted at Bukit Tengkorak had concluded that it is one of the largest pottery-making sites in Southeast Asia. Significant discoveries from Bukit Tengkorak include archaeological evidence on prehistoric human migration and one of the longest maritime trade or exchange routes in the world during the Neolithic Period. In addition, this book discusses the local and traditional Bajau pottery-making of Semporna which is believed to be connected to the prehistoric pottery of Bukit Tengkorak, as well as brief information on other archaeological sites and archaeology of Semporna and Sabah. Finally, this book presents the history and various stages of development of Bukit Tengkorak as an archaeological heritage site for archaeological tourism in Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia. Book Synopsis Performing History by : Nancy November
Download or read book Performing History written by Nancy November and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen essays of Performing History glimpse the diverse ways music historians “do” history, and the diverse ways in which music histories matter. This book’s chapters are structured into six key areas: historically informed performance; ethnomusicological perspectives; particular musical works that “tell,” “enact,” or “perform” war histories; operatic works that works that “tell,” “enact,” or “perform” power or enlightenment; musical works that deploy the body and a broad range of senses to convey histories; and histories involving popular music and performance. Diverse lines of evidence and manifold methodologies are represented here, ranging from traditional historical archival research to interviewing, performing, and composing. The modes of analyzing music and its associated texts represented here are as various as the kinds of evidence explored, including, for example, reading historical accounts against other contextual backdrops, and reading “between the lines” to access other voices than those provided by mainstream interpretation or traditional musicology.
