Book Synopsis Tourism and Archaeological Heritage Management at Petra by : Douglas C Comer
Download or read book Tourism and Archaeological Heritage Management at Petra written by Douglas C Comer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once visited only by the cognoscenti of the ancient world, over the last decade Petra has drawn almost a million visitors in some years. Petra burst into popular consciousness with the release of enormously popular motion picture Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Moviegoers all over the world were introduced to some of the spectacular scenic wonders of Petra: the Siq, a narrow chasm with colorful, towering sandstone walls, and Al-Khazna, the exquisitely carved tomb for a Nabataean king. For centuries, the Nabataeans controlled the trade in precious commodities across the Arabian Peninsula, bring spices from Southeast Asia, incense from present-day Yemen, gold and ivory from Africa, and silk from the Far East across the Empty Quarter to ports on the western Mediterranean. In 1985, Petra was included on the list of World Heritage Sites. Since then, low cost jet travel and a fast highway from the capital city of Amman have made the site increasingly accessible. The Jordanian government has made attracting tourists to Jordan a top priority. For all of the attention that Petra has received, it is still surprisingly poorly understood. A widely accepted chronology of the city, even the dates of major tombs and monuments, has yet to be established. Even the mystery of why and how Arab nomads adopted a sedentary lifestyle and built a great city has yet to be fully explained. Will Petra’s popularity as a tourism destination overshadow the importance of addressing these questions, and, more importantly, will tourism damage the archaeological remains there in ways that make answers more difficult or even impossible to find?

One fantastic sci-fi universe, where the only limit is one's imagination. Welcome to Starflight. Based on the exploration-based Starflight video game series created by Greg Johnson and the Binary Systems team, the stories in Tales From the Starport Lounge flesh out and shine a light into the darkest corners of the known universe. Join the last vestiges of Humanity and their alien allies (the reptilian Thrynn, the insectoid Velox, and the plant-based Elowan) as they attempt to carve out their own territory in a sector of space filled with wondrous opportunity and deadly threats. Brave explorers seek out new worlds to colonize while merchants cruise from starport to starport, their holds laden with exotic goods. Not all in this futuristic setting have noble intent. For every prospector and trader attempting to make a difference, a dozen pirates, smugglers, and mobsters engage in all manner of criminal enterprise. Gangs fill the underbellies of every major city and raid the trade routes between the stars, pushing the outnumbered and outgunned Interstel Police to their limit and forcing civilians to take matters into their own hands. It's a rough and tumble universe, where one wrong move could spell doom for an expedition, or grant enough wealth to buy a planet. Board your ship and set course for stars unknown! The universe awaits. Stories include: "Those Who Came Before" by Michael Gants, "Choices" by Christopher Woods, "Black Box Blues" by Philip K. Booker, "Rock of Truth" by Bart Kemper, "Obligations" by Marisa Wolf, "Hindsight" by R.J. Ladon, "Peacestone" by Brisco Woods, "Everyone Gets What They Have Coming" by D.J. Thanks to S Daljit Singh ji for the great work which will benefit future generations understand Guru Ji’s message easily.” -Amarjit Singh, M.D., University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York “A monumental undertaking, reflecting a lifetime of devotion to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and to the scholarly study of its voluminous texts. Both its rendition of the original Gurmukhi script, with accompanying English transliteration, and its erudite commentary on each of the Granth’s many hymns mark this work as a stunning achievement which will benefit all serious students of the Sikh religion and of world religions in general.” -Barry Crawford, Ph.D., Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas
