Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based around a series of true events. The BBC's current affairs programme 'Panorama' undertook a sixty minute documentary / expose surrounding an elite government task force that went undercover in Sheffield over a period of twelve months. Their remit was to use the Proceeds of Crime Act to fill up the police federations coffers using illegally gained intelligence, on one hand overlooking - and in some cases encouraging - major criminal activity such as murder, kidnap and torture; whilst on the other, surreptitiously acquiring pre-bargained guilty pleas from defendants then reneging on deals, which culminated in some of the heaviest sentences ever handed out in the UK. But the programme was never aired."

Wilson Kipper knows this can't be right, since no hominids lived during the time of the dinosaurs, and it turns out his suspicions are correct: someone is altering the exhibit at night. Is someone on the janitorial staff? A new professor or her daughter? Or someone else? Wilson and his friends need to get to the bottom of this messed-up exhibit.

Book excerpt: Handbook of Approximation Algorithms and Metaheuristics, Second Edition reflects the tremendous growth in the field, over the past two decades. Through contributions from leading experts, this handbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the underlying theory and methodologies, as well as the various applications of approximation algorithms and metaheuristics. Volume 1 of this two-volume set deals primarily with methodologies and traditional applications. It includes restriction, relaxation, local ratio, approximation schemes, randomization, tabu search, evolutionary computation, local search, neural networks, and other metaheuristics. It also explores multi-objective optimization, reoptimization, sensitivity analysis, and stability. Traditional applications covered include: bin packing, multi-dimensional packing, Steiner trees, traveling salesperson, scheduling, and related problems. Volume 2 focuses on the contemporary and emerging applications of methodologies to problems in combinatorial optimization, computational geometry and graphs problems, as well as in large-scale and emerging application areas. It includes approximation algorithms and heuristics for clustering, networks (sensor and wireless), communication, bioinformatics search, streams, virtual communities, and more. About the Editor Teofilo F. Gonzalez is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He completed his Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Oklahoma, the Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Texas at Dallas, before joining the UCSB computer science faculty in 1984. He spent sabbatical leaves at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education and Utrecht University. He is known for his highly cited pioneering research in the hardness of approximation; for his sublinear and best possible approximation algorithm for k-tMM clustering; for introducing the open-shop scheduling problem as well as algorithms for its solution that have found applications in numerous research areas; as well as for his research on problems in the areas of job scheduling, graph algorithms, computational geometry, message communication, wire routing, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primarily designed as a text for undergraduate students of computer science and engineering and information technology, and postgraduate students of computer applications, the book would also be useful to postgraduate students of computer science and IT (M.Sc., Computer Science; M.Sc., IT). The objective of this book is to expose students to basic techniques in algorithm design and analysis. This well organized text provides the design techniques of algorithms in a simple and straightforward manner. Each concept is explained with an example that helps students to remember the algorithm devising techniques and analysis. The text describes the complete development of various algorithms along with their pseudo-codes in order to have an understanding of their applications. It also discusses the various design factors that make one algorithm more efficient than others, and explains how to devise the new algorithms or modify the existing ones. Key Features Randomized and approximation algorithms are explained well to reinforce the understanding of the subject matter. Various methods for solving recurrences are well explained with examples. NP-completeness of various problems are proved with simple explanation.

Book excerpt: In this research the stone and flint artefacts of the site Swifterbant are analysed. Attention is focussed on the Neolithic occupation phase of the prehistoric creek system (c. 4300 - 4000 cal BC) where archaeological traces were found on several levee and river dune sites. This study shows that there is a larger variability in site types than originally presumed. It is established that these sites are all part of one settlement system in which they all had a different function. This thesis comprises a monograph on the research history of the site and the different aspects of the lithic research such as typological analysis, technological attribute analysis, raw material analysis and use-wear analysis, in combination with a detailed inventory (catalogue). All this leads to new insights into the use of lithic artefacts. The importance of stone tool morphology, the selective gathering of stone tool blanks or the use of two different flint production sequences are but a few of these interesting aspects. Other topics concern tool function, mobility, raw material access and use, cultural markers and social identity. In combining the results from this research with that of other Swifterbant sites a better understanding of the different aspects of prehistoric stone and flint industries is gained.
