Book Synopsis Fourth Ezra and Second Baruch by : Matthias Henze
Download or read book Fourth Ezra and Second Baruch written by Matthias Henze and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two Jewish works that are the subject of this volume, 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch, were written around the turn of the first century CE in the aftermath of the Roman destruction of the Second Temple. Both texts are apocalypses, and both occupy an important place in early Jewish literature and thought: they were composed right after the Second Temple period, as Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity began to emerge. The twenty essays in this volume were first presented and discussed at the Sixth Enoch Seminar at the Villa Cagnola at Gazzada, near Milan, Italy, on June 26-30, 2011. Together they reflect the lively debate about 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch among the most distinguished specialists in the field. The Contributors are: Gabriele Boccaccini; Daniel Boyarin; John J. Collins; Devorah Dimant; Lutz Doering; Lorenzo DiTommaso; Steven Fraade; Lester L. Grabbe; Matthias Henze; Karina M. Hoogan; Liv Ingeborg Lied; Hindy Najman; George W.E. Book Synopsis The Apocryphal Apocalypse by : Alastair Hamilton
Download or read book The Apocryphal Apocalypse written by Alastair Hamilton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-09-16 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study of the reception of the apocryphal Second Book of Esdras (4 Ezra) from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. Professor Hamilton discusses the concepts of biblical apocrypha and canonicity in connection with the increasingly critical attitude to religious authority which developed with the humanists and intensified with the Reformation. The Book owed its initial success to Hebraists such as Pico della Mirandola and Bibliander. It was used to account for the origins of Jewish Kabbalah and to prophesy political and religious events: the fall of the Ottoman empire, or the destruction of the papacy. Anabaptists, dissident Protestants of various persuasions, Rosicrucians and Paracelsians consulted it not only as a work of prophecy but, it is argued, as an emblem of dissent, rejected by the official Churches. At the same time more sober scholars, both Protestants and Catholics, scrutinized 2 Esdras with greater objectivity, endeavouring to date it correctly and establish its authorship. This study also investigates the interaction between their views and those of the Book's enthusiastic supporters.

Book Synopsis 'Christus Medicus' in der frühchristlichen Sarkophagskulptur by : David Knipp
Download or read book 'Christus Medicus' in der frühchristlichen Sarkophagskulptur written by David Knipp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the representation of Christ's Healing Miracles in early Christian sepulchral art from Provence and Northern Italy. It sees the imagery through the contemporary exegetical writings and tries thus to uncover new strata of symbolic significance in early Christian art. The aim of the work is to reveal the complex theological concepts reflected in the relief decoration of a small number of late fourth-century sarcophagi and to cast thus light upon the spiritual climate of the sphere the persons who commissioned them were part of. It also links the narrative structure of representations of medical treatment and miracle scenes in ancient art with the Christian images and establishes new formal and iconographic connexions.
Book Synopsis The Third Gender and Aelfric's Lives of Saints by : Rhonda L McDaniel
Download or read book The Third Gender and Aelfric's Lives of Saints written by Rhonda L McDaniel and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Third Gender, McDaniel addresses the idea of the "third gender" in early hagiography and Latin treatises on virginity and then examines Aelfric's treatment of gender in his translations of Latin monastic Lives for his non-monastic audiences. She first investigates patristic ideas about a "third gender" by describing this concept within the theoretical frameworks of monasticism and then turns to creating a historical and theological cultural context within which to locate an interpretation of Aelfric's portrayals of male and female saints.
