Book excerpt: Holland Hockey winger and campus hottie, Cole Davis, might be an MVP with the ladies, but I'm not falling for a player... not with medical school on the line. With our best friends dating, our forced proximity is inevitable. That doesn't mean I have to like it-or the way he makes me feel. Like I'm missing out and there's more to life than sitting on the sidelines. It only takes one moment of weakness to remind me why I should have stayed away from Cole. He might be a ruthless player, but nothing about this is a game. Cole Holland Donovan knows exactly what she wants out of life- and it isn't me. She's not looking for any distractions, and I'm a one-night kind of guy, but that doesn't stop me from wanting her. From the first electric kiss-I know one night will never be enough. I just need to convince her that I'm in it for the long haul-this isn't just about scoring. On the ice, I'm a pro at blocking shots and stealing passes, but when it comes to Holland the rules change. I won't stop fighting for her, for us, until I make her mine. Authors Note: A heartfelt college sports romance with an HEA. No Cliffhanger. For mature readers.

In game worlds players can take on the role of antagonists; they allow us to play with behaviour that would be offensive, illegal or immoral if it happened outside of the game sphere. While contemporary games have always handled certain problematic topics, such as war, disasters, human decay, post-apocalyptic futures, cruelty and betrayal, lately even the most playful of genres are introducing situations in which players are presented with difficult ethical and moral dilemmas. This volume is an investigation of "dark play" in video games, or game play with controversial themes as well as controversial play behaviour. It covers such questions as: Why do some games stir up political controversies? How do games invite, or even push players towards dark play through their design? Where are the boundaries for what can be presented in a games? Are these boundaries different from other media such as film and books, and if so why? What is the allure of dark play and why do players engage in these practices?

Book excerpt: Baseball games are supposed to be fun, right? I got tickets to bring my son. Popcorn, soda and an easy day in the sun, but then I saw him. But Surprise! There’s Michael. His last name is Irons. He plays major leagues and he’s the father of my son. Every instinct told me to take our boy and run. I hadn’t known his name or how to get in touch with him the past six years. Now not only does he see me in the stand, it takes him a glance at my boy and he knows the truth. It was like fate brought us to this point, but he climbed into the fan benches to talk and flirt. I told myself it was just about our son, but alone, our conversations are getting heated. I didn’t expect our magical memory would be burned in his brain. Or he’d want me again. All I wanted was a quiet life to raise my son. Ball players are dangerous. But what happens when the season ends? Let me tell you the truth… I never expected what actually happened.

An Overnight Sensation, Book One, starts in 1956 with a scandalous love nest murder, then rewinds to Sonya at the age of 17 in 1940, a dreamy girl in the Royal Box of the Krakow Opera. When Sonya’s mother is hanged by the Nazis, she must grow up quickly. Using her wits and beauty, Sonya escapes Poland with the help of partisan fighters and makes her way to London during the Blitz. In 1943, she finagles a passage to America on the Mauretania, a dangerous North Atlantic crossing on a troop ship full of men. As the ship steams north into Arctic waters evading enemy submarines, Sonya almost wins at a high-stakes game of love . . . only to arrive in New York alone and desperate, determined to outwit fortune and become a star. An Overnight Sensation is a dark comedy of manners: a tale of murder, blackmail, fortune-hunters and dreamers, and the price paid for living large.

Book excerpt: Neil Lanctot’s biography of Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella—filled with surprises—is the first life of the Dodger great in decades and the most authoritative ever published. Born to a father of Italian descent and an African- American mother, Campanella wanted to be a ballplayer from childhood but was barred by color from the major leagues. He dropped out of school to play professional ball with the Negro Leagues’ Washington (later Baltimore) Elite Giants, where he honed his skills under Hall of Fame catcher Biz Mackey. Campy played eight years in the Negro Leagues until the major leagues integrated. Ironically, he and not Jackie Robinson might have been the player to integrate baseball, as Lanctot reveals. An early recruit to Branch Rickey’s “Great Experiment” with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Campy became the first African-American catcher in the twentieth century in the major leagues. As Lanctot discloses, Campanella and Robinson, pioneers of integration, had a contentious relationship, largely as a result of a dispute over postseason barnstorming. Campanella was a mainstay of the great Dodger teams that consistently contended for pennants in the late 1940s and 1950s. He was a three-time MVP, an outstanding defensive catcher, and a powerful offensive threat. But on a rainy January night in 1958, all that changed. On his way home from his liquor store in Harlem, Campy lost control of his car, hit a utility pole, and was paralyzed below the neck. Lanctot reveals how Campanella’s complicated personal life (he would marry three times) played a role in the accident. Campanella would now become another sort of pioneer, learning new techniques of physical therapy under the celebrated Dr. Howard Rusk at his Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. As he gradually recovered some limited motion, Campanella inspired other athletes and physically handicapped people everywhere. Based on interviews with dozens of people who knew Roy Campanella and diligent research into contemporary sources, Campy offers a three-dimensional portrait of this gifted athlete and remarkable man whose second life after baseball would prove as illustrious and courageous as his first.

Book excerpt: As Liverpool F.C. reach their 125th anniversary, amidst the celebrations, doubts persist. Are they still elite? Can their prolonged title drought be ended? Foreign owners say they came to win but the trophy cabinet lies bare. Where to next for the reds? Lost? explores the gloried past, the moneyed present and the uncertain future of both Liverpool F.C. and the English game at large. Have they lost their way? Liverpool F.C.’s most famous manager, Bill Shankly, declared that the club ‘exists to win trophies’ and for many years this maxim proved true, as Liverpool became one of the most successful clubs in European football and dominated the scene in England for over two decades. Yet recently, the victories have dried up and Liverpool have not won the league title in over a quarter of a century. Football is also in a state of flux as major TV deals have made the Premier league the wealthiest in the world, but the gap between the elite clubs and those striving to catch up widens. Has the game lost it’s soul? Who will rise and who will fall as a new uncharted era in football unfolds? Lost? captures exclusive interviews with key figures including former Liverpool managers, Brendan Rogers and Roy Evans, the Shankly family and a whole host of footballing legends, past and present. The book also includes reflective pieces on an array of Premier League clubs from both a sporting and cultural perspective, looking not just at the team in isolations, but also at the communities and landscapes that shape them

Book excerpt: "There are good things and bad about being part of a big Italian family in a small American town. Good things and bad, and mostly you couldn't get a cigarette paper in the gap between them. That's because they're the same things." When Robbie Giraldi drags himself reluctantly back to the dilapidated town where he was raised, it's definitely just for a visit, and the only bright spot he foresees is an opportunity to connect with his brother Cris again. He doesn't expect to promise anybody he'll come home for good, and he doesn't know how he'll deliver on the pledge he's made... Cris, on the the other hand, knows he's back for keeps. His marriage and career are both emphatically over, his plans for the future in ruins. Always the steady, reliable one, he's increasingly shouldering the burdens of older relatives, while staying characteristically silent about his grief, his loneliness, and his growing resentment of Robbie's apparently charmed life... A story about family, betrayal, and forgiveness — and about truly coming home.

Book excerpt: Video games permeate our everyday existence. They immerse players in fascinating gameworlds and exciting experiences, often inviting them in various ways to reflect on the enacted events. Gerald Farca explores the genre of dystopian video games and the player's aesthetic response to their nightmarish gameworlds. Players, he argues, will gradually come to see similarities between the virtual dystopia and their own ›offline‹ environment, thus learning to stay wary of social and political developments. In his analysis, Farca draws from a variety of research fields, such as literary theory and game studies, combining them into a coherent theory of aesthetic response to dystopian games.

Book excerpt: In November 1939, the Nazis used the so-called Venlo Incident as a pretext for invading the Netherlands. Following orders from Himmler, two British intelligence officers, Sigismund Payne Best and Richard Stevens, were captured from the Café Backus in the town of Venlo. Best had been trying to contact German officers plotting against Hitler. The Netherlands had been an ideal ground for operations, because of its proximity to Germany and the fact that Dutch Intelligence was badly funded. When Best met the three agents – including Walter Schellenberg – he was carrying with him a list of British agents who were working in Europe. hen he arrived at the café, which was just over the Dutch border, he realised he had walked into a trap. A Dutch intelligence officer who accompanied them, Dirk Klop, was fatally wounded. Best and Stevens were taken into Germany. After their Berlin interrogation and torture they were taken to the notorious Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Hitler used the incident – together with the Elser bomb plot – as an excuse for war with the Netherlands, claiming their involvement with Britain violated their neutrality. As Nigel Jones explains, the incident was crucial in making the British suspicious of dealings with anti-Hitler resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Containment Works examines the conduct of American foreign policy during and after the Cold War through the lens of applied policy analysis. Wallace J. Thies argues that the Bush Doctrine after 2002 was a theory of victory—a coherent strategic view that tells a state how best to transform scarce resources into useful military assets, and how to employ those assets in conflicts. He contrasts prescriptions derived from the Bush Doctrine with an alternative theory of victory, one based on containment and deterrence, which US presidents employed for much of the Cold War period. There are, he suggests, multiple reasons for believing that containment was working well against Saddam Hussein's Iraq after the first Gulf War and that there was no need to invade Iraq in 2003. Thies reexamines five cases of containment drawn from the Cold War and the post-Cold War world. Each example, Thies suggests, offered US officials a choice between reliance on traditional notions of containment and reliance on a more forceful approach. To what extent did reliance on rival theories of victory—containment versus first strike—contribute to a successful outcome? Might these cases have been resolved more quickly, at lower cost, and more favorably to American interests if US officials had chosen a different mix of the coercive and deterrent tools available to them? Thies suggests that the conventional wisdom about containment was often wrong: a superpower like the United States has such vast resources at its disposal that it could easily thwart Libya, Iraq, and Iran by means other than open war.
