Book Synopsis Russian Projects Against India from the Czar Peter to General Skobeleff by : Henry Sutherland Edwards
Download or read book Russian Projects Against India from the Czar Peter to General Skobeleff written by Henry Sutherland Edwards and published by London, Remington & Company. This book was released on 1885 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Sutherland Edwards (1828-1906) was a British author and journalist who over a long career worked in a wide range of genres, producing dramatic pieces, fiction, and serious journalism. In 1856 he went to Russia as correspondent of the Illustrated Times to cover the coronation of Tsar Alexander II. He remained in Moscow to study the language and married the daughter of a Scottish engineer who had settled in Russia. Sutherland developed a lifelong interest in Russian subjects, and wrote numerous essays and articles and several books on Russian themes. Russian Projects against India from the Czar Peter to General Skobeleff is a history of Russian interest in and expansion into Central Asia from the time of Peter the Great (1672-1725) to the late 19th century. Echoing what was a widely held view in Great Britain at the time, Sutherland writes in the preface: "Russian expeditions in Central Asia (supported at critical moments by intriguers in Persia and Afghanistan) have always been undertaken, not with a view to an improved frontier, the Russian frontier on the Central Asian side never having been threatened; nor for commercial purposes, the exports and imports between Russia and the Khanates being of the most trifling value, and quite out of proportion to the cost of occupying and administering the Russian possessions in Central Asia: but simply in order to place Russia in a position to threaten and, on a fitting opportunity, attack India." Among the Russian expeditions covered in detail by Sutherland are General Vasily Alexseevich Perovsky's expedition of 1839 to Khiva; Colonel Nikolai Pavlovich Ignatiev's mission of 1858 to Khiva and Bukhara; and General Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufman's expedition to Khiva of 1872-73. The concluding chapter, "Projects for the Invasion of India," discusses several different schemes put forward by Russian military writers in the second half of the 19th century for Russian advances on India through Afghanistan. The book contains a fold-out color map of the Russo-Afghan frontier.

Download or read book My Life written by Leon Trotsky and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since My Life was first published it has been regarded as a unique political, literary and human document. Written in the first year of Trotsky's exile in Turkey, it contains the earliest authoritative account of the rise of Stalinism and the expulsion of the Left Opposition, who heroically fought for the ideas and traditions of Lenin. Trotsky's exile is the culmination of a narrative which moves from his childhood, his education in the "universities" of Tsarist prisons, Siberia and then foreign exile - to his involvement in the European revolutionary movement and his central role in the tempestuous 1905 revolution and the Bolshevik victory in October 1917 and the civil war which followed. The work concludes with his deportation and exile. With an introduction by Alan Woods and a preface by Trotsky's grandson, Vsievolod Volkov.
Book Synopsis The Heart of Asia by : Edward Denison Ross
Download or read book The Heart of Asia written by Edward Denison Ross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1899, The Heart of Asia is a definitive history of Central Asia from pre-history to the contemporary machinations of the Russian empire. The book is valuable not only because of the quality of the historical work on the early period, but also because of the unique picture that it gives of contemporary views on the potential for Anglo-Russian conflict, at a time when the Russian Empire was Britain's closest rival for Asian hegemony. Scholars of modern Russia and Central Asia will find much that echoes, and indeed drives, more recent events. Includes 34 illustrations and two maps.

Book Synopsis Turkestan and the Fate of the Russian Empire by : Daniel Brower
Download or read book Turkestan and the Fate of the Russian Empire written by Daniel Brower and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central argument of this book is that the half-century of Russian rule in Central Asia was shaped by traditions of authoritarian rule, by Russian national interests, and by a civic reform agenda that brought to Turkestan the principles that informed Alexander II's reform policies. This civilizing mission sought to lay the foundations for a rejuvenated, 'modern' empire, unified by imperial citizenship, patriotism, and a shared secular culture. Evidence for Brower's thesis is drawn from major archives in Uzbekistan and Russia. Use of these records permitted him to develop the first interpretation, either in Russian or Western literature, of Russian colonialism in Turkestan that draws on the extensive archival evidence of policy-making, imperial objectives, and relations with subject peoples.
