Oppressed for many years by the Western peoples, which drew the word slave from the appellation Slav, scorned by their German neighbours, who would not regard their race in any other light but that of ethnological matter (et/mo logz'seher Stofi), they probably owed their inferiority solely to their geographical position. Modern civilisation, like that of the ancients, built itself up almost independently of the Slavs. Yet they have raised their protest against a too absolute decree of exclusion, and they have right on their Side. The Slav nation did not, indeed, hollow out the channels of the double movement, intellectual or religious, Renaissance and Reform, from which the modern era issued, but it opened them in two directions. Copernicus and John Huss were both Slavs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Literature Since the Crimean'war, in 1855, the power of Russia, although it suffered in that contest, has been much more noticed by other nations than it had been before; and since the abolition of serfdom in her dominion, in 1861, her government has become a study for other statesmen besides her own: but no nation yet has given her literature more than a pass ing notice. The reason may be plain. 'her great military power is felt by the world, and her policy, in reference to the law of nations, has its influence, but her literature, which will ultimately represent the best results of all. Her powers, is not yet established. Perhaps her banner may yet wave, her policy rule, and her language be heard, from the chilling snows of Siberia to the burning rays of Good hopel - for she is rapidly availing herself of the science, art, and skill of other nations - if so, then her literature will be known to the world; for the school and college, in the range of time, are more powerful than the cabinet and the field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Russian Literature But in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the existence of this growing barrier was not yet perceptible. The eleventh and twelfth centuries in Russia were an age of Sagas and Byliny, already clearly stamped with the democratic character and ideal that is at the root of all Russian literature, and which offer so sharp a contrast to Greek and Western ideals. In the Russian Sagas, the most popular hero is the peasant's son, who is despised and rejected, but at the critical moment displays superhuman strength and saves his country from the enemy; and in return for his services is allowed to drink his fill for three years in a tavern. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Masters of Russian Literature in the Nineteenth Century But these trivialities, dressed in graceful idioms, are simply charming. To touch them, to analyze them, is like touching a soap-bubble. Fortunately, M. Dupuy has also all the Gallic acuteness and cleverness bf illus tration and, in spite of occasional glittering, illusive triteness, there is a solid basis of value, which remains even when the scintillations are dulled, when the iri descence is obscured by the veil of translation. His skill in giving the gist of a book is thoroughly characteristic and that, it is to be hoped, shines through the English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Russian Literature: With a Lexicon of Russian Authors That the kingdoms of Europe are daily becoming more exposed to the risk of being subjugated by the barbarism of Russia, is the constant theme of declamation among a numerous and influential party in this country. It will be evident, however, on the slightest reflection, that it is not the barbarism of Russia which is to be dreaded, but her civilisation. Not only year after year is some new province added to the formidable acquisitions of the imperial sceptre, but day after day the internal resources of the people are becoming more and more developed, and the Russian language is rendered richer in its attractions in the same proportion as it is more widely diffused in extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Russian Literature To the difficulties inseparably attached to all literary criticism must, in the present case, be added the circumstance that the writers here reviewed belong to a nation whose history and civilization differ in many essential points from the history and civilization of Western Europe. I dare not flatter myself that in all cases I have succeeded in under standing aright the form and stir of mind which have given to the Russian people a literature of their own. I can only trust that an honest desire to comprehend and appreciate the character and aims of a people among whom I have lived for many years, and a warm sympathy with the progress they have made and - despite recent ominous events - are still making, may have proved sufiicient safeguards against glaring errors, and that justice has been done in these pages to the more illustrious writers and thinkers of modern Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia's Gift to the World In any account of Russian literature, two kinds of it have to be considered which are historically separate, though the one to some extent grew out of and is founded upon the other. There is the early popular literature of tales, ballads, and poems which grew up among the people, was handed down by memory, and very often was not committed to writing at all until modern times. There is also the regular literature of books, which begins when language has been studied as an art and reduced to rules. This latter is the form which literature takes in modern times. In both forms the recox d of Russia is extraordinarily rich. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Russian Literature The period of the greatest activity of the two brothers was during their residence in Moravia. The Moravian princes, seeing that the people were unable to apprehend even the elementary truths of Christianity, addressed them selves to the Byzantine Emperor Michael; who selected Cyril for the purpose. The success of the Slavonic mission in Moravia, aroused and alarmed the German Hierarchy which, dreading the loss of its influence on the Moravians impugned these first missioners before Pope Nicholas I. The Pope summoned the brothers to Rome for trial, but it was his successor Adrian II who heard them, and so far from letting them be tried, made Methodius a Bishop and sent him to Moravia where he lived for sixteen years more. Cyril, worn out with toil, died at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Anthology in English The purpose of this anthology is to offer to English and American readers in an adequate translation examples of the best in Russian literature. In compiling it, I have endeavoured to steer a course between several diverging currents. One method I have rejected is to set out a multitude of extracts in chronological order in the hope of illustrating by them the progress of Russian literature from its birth to its lusty prime. Such a compilation, however, is of real interest to no one but historians. Another plan was to devote separate sections to Russian prose, Russian verse and Russian drama. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Russian Masterpieces More than ninety per cent, of the Russian people never read "short stories." They create them, tell them, listen to them. The popular Russian short story, is the skaska or fairy tale, which belongs to the province of folklore, probably the richest, most varied, wise, and clever of all folklores of Europe, having absorbed all the richest elements of the East and some of the West. But the short story in the sense in which it is understood by Americans, is the product of the journalization of literature, of the daily press, which did not develop in Russia until the seventies of the nineteenth century. The predecessor of the newspaper, the big monthly, created the "serial," the three-volume novel, usually covering the year with its twelve voluminous instalments.
