The simple-hearted villager, as if in a frightened way, recommended to the enlightened public four fantastic stories allegedly told at gatherings in his modest hut. "This is real gaiety, sincere, unconstrained, without cheating, without being stiff. In some places, what poetry! What sensitivity!"--So welcomed the new book Pushkin. He knew that, under the mask of an old farmer, a twenty-two-year-old writer is hiding, happily inventing and colorful characters (daring dudes, dazzling marvels, stubborn old men, angry women, mermaids, witches, devils - in a word, all sorts of people and nonhumans), and funny storytellers, and the collector himself invariably "truthful" nonsense - Rudy Pank. Nowadays the name of the writer "Evenings ..." is known to all, in 1831, very few knew him. But among them were two great poets - Zhukovsky ..." --Vasha Kniga

Book excerpt: This early work by Nikolai Gogol was originally published in 1830 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'St. John's Eve' is a short story about young lovers that are kept apart by the girl's father. The boy then gets convinced to accept a dangerous deal from a witch in order to win the right to his love. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born in Sorochintsi, Ukraine in 1809. In 1831, Gogol brought out the first volume of his Ukrainian stories, 'Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka'. It met with immediate success, and he followed it a year later with a second volume. 'The Nose' is regarded as a masterwork of comic short fiction, and 'The Overcoat' is now seen as one of the greatest short stories ever written; some years later, Dostoyevsky famously stated "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'." He is seen by many contemporary critics as one of the greatest short story writers who has ever lived, and the Father of Russia's Golden Age of Realism.

Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's work "The Evening before Ivan Kupal" (Вечер накануне Ивана Купала) which is also translated as "St. John's Eve". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. "The Evening on the Eve of Ivan Kupala" is a story by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol from the series "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka". It was first published in 1830 in the February and March issues of Otechestvennye zapiski, without the author's signature, under the title Bisavryuk. The editor made many changes to it. This story explains the text that appeared in the preface and ridicules the editorial arbitrariness in the name of the narrator. This is a Tragic-comic story with horror and surrealist elements. The story is considered a "Kunstmarchen", a fairy tale that is based in reality or folk tale told by a subjective narrator. Foma Grigorievich, the narrator, describes his grandfather's stories as themselves magically efficacious. As in Gogol's other stories, the laws of nature are often broken; for instance, the devil's gifts float in water. It is a deeply Ukrainian story- a dark and mystical tale revolving around the protagonist's desperate quest to find a hidden treasure. The narrative intertwines love, betrayal, and the supernatural against the backdrop of the summer solstice celebration.

Book excerpt: Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852) is by far the most enigmatic, unexpected, contradictory, and mystical writer representing classic Russian literature. His stories are unforgettably colored with Ukrainian romance and include uncanny dissections of the realities of St. Petersburg under Tsarist Russia. The ethnographic realities are described with almost scientific precision while incorporating those inexplicable, fantasy, elements that define his works as Magical Realism. Some stories feature witches, sorcerers, ghouls, mermaids, and even demons alongside quite pragmatic and cheerful Ukrainian citizenry. Others feature dull tsarist officials and crazy clerks with exaggerated and humorously complex personalities. You will be hard-pressed to find such a brilliant combination of fantastical stories, plots, and characters in another author. The true Russian soul is wide and incomprehensible. Illustrated by D. Fisher Table of Content: 1. The Viy. 2. Christmas Eve (ST. JOHN’S EVE). 3. A May Night. 4. The Cloak (The Mantle). 5. The Nose. 6. The Carriage (The Calash).

This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. "May Night, or the Drowned Maiden" is the third story in the collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka. It was made into the opera May Night by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1878-79 and also into a Ukrainian setting by Mykola Lysenko. This story melds romance with elements of the supernatural. Centered around the legend of drowned maidens, the tale delves into a young man's love affair and his encounters with these spectral beings. In the XVIII century, as young villagers enjoy an evening of song, Levko, son of the village head, longs to marry Hanna. However, his father, who frequently boasts of his past with Queen Catherine, refuses due to his own affections for Hanna. After Hanna and Levko discuss a tragic local legend of a lady wronged by her stepmother and turned spirit, Levko rallies boys to mock the village head in protest. Amidst the turmoil, Levko, by a haunted pond, is given a note by the spirit of the lady from the legend. Upon waking, he presents this note, purportedly from a commissar, which orders the head to allow Levko's marriage to Hanna, leading to an unexpected union blessed under mysterious circumstances.

It starts quite ordinary - a young man is in love with a beautiful young girl, but other people and unforeseen circumstances stand in the way of their happiness. Quite unexpectedly, our young hero receives an offer of help from a very unlikely source.

Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "The Enchanted Place". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. This tale delves into the eerie and strange happenings in a cursed, haunted location. First introduced in 1832 within the second volume of "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka", the original manuscript remains undiscovered. This lack of original source prevents precise dating of the work. Given that "The Enchanted Place" bears the same subtitle, "True tales told by the sexton of the church", as seen in "The Evening on the Eve of Ivan Kupala" and "The Missing Letter", and is presented in a similar style, it's believed that this piece is from the early "Evenings" collection, likely penned between 1829 and 1830. The narrative interweaves two central themes: the quest for hidden treasure and the mischief of devils in illusory or "enchanted" locales.

Book excerpt: A new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "A Terrible Revenge". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. "A Terrible Revenge" is a story by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, part of the collection "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". Approximately dates between the summer and early autumn of 1831. In the first edition of "Evenings", "The Terrible Revenge" has a subtitle, which was removed in later reprints: "An Old True Story". This narrative is laden with dark supernatural elements, telling the story of a man seeking revenge after the murder of his family. The stylistic features of "Terrible Revenge" show the influence of folklore, especially East Slavic. In addition to Gogol's ideas about lamentations and songs written in imitation of Ukrainian folk songs, the story contains many folklore images, comparisons, epithets, including the famous description of the Dnieper: "Wonderful is the Dnieper in calm weather, when it flows freely and smoothly through the forests and the mountains are full of its waters... A rare bird flies to the middle of the Dnieper. Lush!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sorcerer. Nightmares. Secrets. Not the usual components of a love story but Nikolai Gogol’s short horror story follows the love story of Danilo and Katerina as they deal with the presence of an evil sorcerer. When it transpires that the sorcerer is much closer to them than either of them thought, one question remains. Will they be able to defeat the sorcerer and his powers? This gothic tale maps incarnations of evil in everyday life and was one of Gogol’s most successful works, even being adapted into film by Wladyslaw Starewicz in ‘The Terrible Vengeance’ (1913). Considered one of the most prominent figures in Russian literature, Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was born in Ukraine. Both a writer and a dramatist, he is known for the unconventional nature of his works, so much so that they often touch upon folklore and fantasy. He has been associated with a range of different literary styles, including surrealism and Russian realism. Gogol’s most famous works include the novel "Dead Souls", the horror novella "Viy", as well as the short story collections "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka" and "Mirgorod". They have inspired numerous stage, film, and television adaptations including the movie "Inspector General" (1949), based loosely on his play with the same name.
