Its total superficial area is estimated at eight millions of square miles, being more than twice the area of the whole of the United States, and comprising all the north of Europe and Asia, and the north-west corner of North America. This immense territory has given to the Russian empire an importance more imaginary than real. For, as with individuals, so with nations, - nothing, to the cursory observer, invests them so much with the appearance of strength as large landed possessions. According to this idea, however, the aborigines of this western world were a very power ful people, for the whole boundless continent was theirs; and, though divided into a great variety of tribes, they were linked together by interests that made them the common foe of the white man. Nevertheless, they melted away, at his approach, like the snows of winter before the summer's sun. Something, therefore. Beside land, is requisite to national strength. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the East: An Illustrated History of the Conflict Between Russia and Turkey With a Review of the Eastern Question The author of this work has made the Eastern Question for nearly twenty. Years a subject of constant and special study. As a member of the editorial staff of the New York Tribune, and contributor to other daily and weekly papers of New York, he has had many occasions to discuss it editorially in its various aspects, and as editor of and contributor to several cyclopaedias 'and other publications, he has made himself familiar with the entire literature on this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Empire: Its Resources, Government and Policy Tm: Eastern Question and the war have presented Europe to American eyes in a new, and, to most, an unexpected aspect. The actual condition of the European Powers, their comparative strength, their relations to each other, their present policy, and ultimate aims, may now be better under stood by this nation, than ever before. It is possible that the great events, of which we are distant though interested spectators, may, in their progress, work important changes in the Opinions and feelings of the Ameri can people, concerning the parties engaged in this bloody struggle. Indeed, if we compare the present state of the public mind with what it was at the beginning of the con ict, we cannot fail to remark a decided alteration. A sympathy with Russia is fast springing up in the American heart we scarce know why and every day lessens the number among us, who would rejoice at the fall of Sebastopol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eastern Question, in Its Various Phases: Egyptian, British, Russian, Ottoman, Hebrew, American, and Messianic The removal of the Ottoman Empire from Europe, is the dream of Emma, while the powers of Western Europe see, in such an event, the final overthrow of their own nationalities. Russ1a a1ms at Universal Empire, as indicated in the will of Peter the Great. The western powers are not in darkness relative to the intention of the northern autocrat. In all the great national movements of to-day nothing is said by the Monarchs of any other than their own claims to the diadem of the world. Jehovah's claim is ignored. The right of Messiah to the Empire of the whole earth is not once named; and His people are not In any of their plans. The Eastern Question therefore, in the estimation of human rulers and in the purpose of Jehovah, is quite a different problem. To put this question on its proper base is the intention of this work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia the Eastern Question Richard Cobden, Esq., of England, is a name extensively and favorably known. It would be difficult to find the man of the present of more good, practical common-sense. In the language of a personal friend, be is "England's prime-minister of common-sense." His name alone is sufficient guarantee for the extensive perusal of any production of his pen. The following work on Russia was written by him, and first published in a pamphlet form in Edinburgh, London, Manchester and Dublin, in 1836; but its principles and facts have not become essentially changed since that time. They are such as the lapse of time cannot materially affect. And it is believed that the present position of the "Eastern Question," will invest it with fresh interest, and render its reprint at the present time peculiarly seasonable. Few men in our country are better acquainted with European affairs than Rev. Dr. Baird, of New-York, and Foreign Secretary of the "American.and Foreign Christian Union." He was familiar and favorably impressed with this work of Mr. Cobden when it was first published in England, and he now says that "he thinks its republication in this country, and at this moment, would be eminently opportune." For these reasons, it is thought expedient to recommend the work of Mr. Cobden, with a few preliminary observations touching the Eastern Question, to the American public. Russia is, territorially, the largest civil division of the globe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Wars With Turkey Man of the South.' The Eastern question will still be unanswered, and there will still be a dormant volcano which one day will convulse Europe. Ever since the year 1453, when the Turks conquered Constantinople, it may be said that they have been in almost a chronic state of dissension or war with their Christian neighbours. Up to 1683, when Mahomet the Fourth besieged Vienna, the tide of their conquest was advancing; since then it has been slowly but certainly receding. On three successive occasions their naval power has been destroyed by the combined fleets of other nations, and twice has England participated in this de struction. In 1571, at Lepanto, the fleets of Spain, Genoa, Malta, Venice, and Pius V., combined to destroy their navy; again in 1770 they were defeated by the fleet of Russia aided by Englishmen, in the passage of Scio; once more, fifty-seven years later, in 1827, at N avarino the Turkish navy was annihilated by the united fleets of England, Russia, and France. The Turks have not un frequently been called our ancient allies; it will be found on referring to history that they might with greater truth be called 'our ancient enemies, ' as up to 1840 we were nearly always allied against them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth About Russia Before leaving England, I made it my business to ascertain how things looked in the eyes of political leaders of all parties. Ministers were not greatly preoccupied with foreign afiairs. Their interests were firstly Irish and secondly electoral and administrative. Do you think, I was asked, if we antici pated war, we should have reduced the navy estimates this year Our only object is peace. The Ministerial view is that, if they have laid themselves open to the reproach of risking war, they have done so solely because they loved peace so well they were willing to risk war in order to maintain the Conti neutal equilibrium. That they consciously desired war not even their worst enemies assert. But, in their exertions to maintain peace, the danger lay in the fact that they might be mistaken as to the Powers in whose support, in the interests of peace, they Should cast the weight of English influence. No Administration was ever bound over more heavily to abstain from unnecessary war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
