Ruskin's friends were legion, and to include them all - even cursorily - would have lengthened the book beyond reason able limits. I decided that it was better to confine my attention to those directly influencing his life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Opie and His Circle It would be impossible here to thank all my correspondents individually: each letter was replied to at the time, and I now repeat (both in my own name and on the part of my readers) my grateful acknowledgment of the valuable help thus given me in compiling the list of Opie's works. Seldom, I am sure, has a literary worker had such an abundance of good wishes for success from total strangers to these Mr. R. Hall Mccormick added a more tangible expression of goodwill in the gift of a copy of the handsomely illustrated catalogue of his private picture gallery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Ruskin: His Homes and Haunts This essay is obviously an outline; it could not be otherwise When the story of eighty years had to be told in eighty pages. The reader Will find little that is new save an anecdote here and there; but the treat ment, as regards locality, has at least the freshness of its attempt to describe places and scenes not as they may appear to the independent observer to-day, but as they appeared to Ruskin himself. Download or read book Effie written by Suzanne Fagence Cooper and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effie Gray, a beautiful and intelligent young socialite, rattled the foundations of England's Victorian age. Married at nineteen to John Ruskin, the leading art critic of the time, she found herself trapped in a loveless, unconsummated union after Ruskin rejected her on their wedding night. On a trip to Scotland she met John Everett Millais, Ruskin's protégé, and fell passionately in love with him. In a daring act, Effie left Ruskin, had their marriage annulled and entered into a long, happy marriage with Millais. Suzanne Fagence Cooper has gained exclusive access to Effie's previously unseen letters and diaries to tell the complete story of this scandalous love triangle. In Cooper's hands, this passionate love story also becomes an important new look at the work of both Ruskin and Millais with Effie emerging as a key figure in their artistic development. Effie is a heartbreakingly beautiful book about three lives passionately entwined with some of the greatest paintings of the pre-Raphaelite period.
Book Synopsis Studies in Ruskin by : Edward T. Cook
Download or read book Studies in Ruskin written by Edward T. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Ruskin: Some Aspects of the Work and Teaching of John Ruskin The object of the First Part of this little book is not, it will be seen, critical or controversial, but expository. My desire has been to discuss not how, but what, Ruskin has written. For several reasons, such definition seemed to me a thing worth attempting at this time. Mr. Ruskin has of late years written so voluminously, and on subjects so multifarious, that the accidental and the temporary have been like to overlay what is essential and permanent in his teaching. His writings open a vista into a great forest, but there has been some danger of not seeing the forest for the trees. Book Synopsis Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole by : Matthew M. Reeve
Download or read book Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole written by Matthew M. Reeve and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole shows that the Gothic style in architecture and the decorative arts and the tradition of medievalist research associated with Horace Walpole (1717–1797) and his circle cannot be understood independently of their own homoerotic culture. Centered around Walpole’s Gothic villa at Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, Walpole and his “Strawberry Committee” of male friends, designers, and dilettantes invigorated an extraordinary new mode of Gothic design and disseminated it in their own commissions at Old Windsor and Donnington Grove in Berkshire, Lee Priory in Kent, the Vyne in Hampshire, and other sites. Matthew M. Reeve argues that the new “third sex” of homoerotically inclined men and the new “modern styles” that they promoted—including the Gothic style and chinoiserie—were interrelated movements that shaped English modernity. The Gothic style offered the possibility of an alternate aesthetic and gendered order, a queer reversal of the dominant Palladian style of the period. Many of the houses built by Walpole and his circle were understood by commentators to be manifestations of a new queer aesthetic, and in describing them they offered the earliest critiques of what would be called a “queer architecture.” Exposing the role of sexual coteries in the shaping of eighteenth-century English architecture, this book offers a profound and eloquent revision to our understanding of the origins of the Gothic Revival and to medievalism itself. It will be welcomed by architectural historians as well as scholars of medievalism and specialists in queer studies.

Download or read book Critical Shift written by Karen L. Georgi and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Civil War–era art critics James Jackson Jarves, Clarence Cook, and William J. Stillman classified styles and defined art in terms that have become fundamental to our modern periodization of the art of the nineteenth century. In Critical Shift, Karen Georgi rereads many of their well-known texts, finding certain key discrepancies between their words and our historiography that point to unrecognized narrative desires. The book also studies ruptures and revolutionary breaks between “old” and “new” art, as well as the issue of the morality of “true” art. Georgi asserts that these concepts and their sometimes loaded expression were part of larger rhetorical structures that gainsay the uses to which the key terms have been put in modern historiography. It has been more than fifty years since a book has been devoted to analyzing the careers of these three critics, and never before has their role in the historiography and periodization of American art been analyzed. The conclusions drawn from this close rereading of well-known texts challenge the fundamental nature of “historical context” in American art history.
