This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural State and Province Series Rural California The purpose of this writing is to convey impressions of the characters, qualities and activities of California rural life and industries. It attempts to sketch formative conditions both of natural situations and resources and of factors influencing local individualism and sociology. It also presents, with some detail of character and method, concrete agricultural achievements which are unique in American progress. Thus it is hoped to reveal the characteristics of the rural life through which natural conditions have been translated into industrial accomplishment. Two reasons may be cited as justifying this effort. First, it has not been hitherto undertaken in a comprehensive way. Second, California is so young that more than two-thirds of the whole span of her life as an American state have passed under the adult observation of the writer; and his knowledge of the preceding portion was chiefly derived from personal acquaintance with those who had participated as young men in its earliest enterprises and continued their efforts for the upbuilding of the state for several decades - many of them enduring until the dawning of the present century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rural Survey of Tulare County California The social and religious problems of relatively new and rapidly growing communities must differ in many important particulars from those of sections where society is mature and social institutions long established. Social surveys made in the East and Middle West throw comparatively little light upon conditions obtaining on the Pacific Coast. For this reason the survey which is here reported was under taken. The Home Missions Committee of the Synod of California asked that a survey be made within the borders of the Synod and the Presbytery of San Joaquin requested that one of the counties of its territory be selected for study. Preliminary arrangements to this ef feet having been made, the Home Missions Committee of the Pres bytery suggested Tulare County because of the representative char acter of its industries, its predominatingly agricultural interests and its general accessibility. The field work of the survey was begun in the fall of 1914 by O. F. Wisner and was completed by H. N. Morse; this report was prepared for publication by the latter and is issued by the Country Church Work of the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions for the use of all who are concerned with the problems which it dis cusses. Book Synopsis The Gender of Memory by : Gail Hershatter
Download or read book The Gender of Memory written by Gail Hershatter and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn about the Chinese revolution by placing a doubly marginalized group—rural women—at the center of the inquiry? In this book, Gail Hershatter explores changes in the lives of seventy-two elderly women in rural Shaanxi province during the revolutionary decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Interweaving these women’s life histories with insightful analysis, Hershatter shows how Party-state policy became local and personal, and how it affected women’s agricultural work, domestic routines, activism, marriage, childbirth, and parenting—even their notions of virtue and respectability. The women narrate their pasts from the vantage point of the present and highlight their enduring virtues, important achievements, and most deeply harbored grievances. In showing what memories can tell us about gender as an axis of power, difference, and collectivity in 1950s rural China and the present, Hershatter powerfully examines the nature of socialism and how gender figured in its creation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Casa Grande: A California Pastoral A fitful blaze from glowing logs moved shadows in the spacious living-room of the old house. Through the drowsy night-gloom lime-washed adobe walls showed clean and distant, their massiveness draped by vaqueros' trappings, with here and there quaint relics of former soldier occupants. Casa Grande, sturdy and red-tiled, had been a fort when Rancho Aguas Frias, in Sonoma County, was the northernmost Mexican outpost of California. Now, some ten years later, it was the dwelling of John Miller, who had converted the abandoned outpost into a prosperous cattle range. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judge Lynch: A Tale of the California Vineyards There was a puzzled, grieved expression on the sheriff's face as he stepped forward and laid his hand on the young man's shoulder. "Jack Scott, you are my prisoner." Jack started and shivered a little. Arrest on a charge of murder is fortunately a rare experience, and of a kind to shock the strongest nerves. But arrest at this time and place meant something worse than suspicion, confinement, and the long suspense of a trial. The young man knew this, and his mind grasped in a moment the whole significance of the situation, with the lightning speed of thought in moments of peril. For this isolated little community of San Pablo, forty miles from railroad or telegraph, cut off by the precipitous coast range from the rest of California - even from the rest of its own county - was a law unto itself. The village nestled in a narrow plain; on one side the broad Pacific, on the other the mountains clothed on their western slope with the clustered vines. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bill's Mistake a Story of the California Redwoods It was a warm day in early June; one of those days when you just simply cannot stay in; a day that was never made for a school-room or for study; when a dip in the surf or a hike among the redwoods would be far more preferable than a drowsy school-room; a day that meant you must be out of doors. But it was all over, anyway-for a time, at least. The last bell was ringing. Vaca tion had begun for the students of the Santa Cruz High School. Groups of boys and girls came pouring out of the doors, laughing and chattering, with happy, smiling faces; only occasionally a long-drawn face appearing among them - no doubt that of some child who had failed to be promoted. But they were all glad to be free for a long two' months to come; all were glad to get out into the beautiful summer day. Book Synopsis Suggestions to the Settler in California (Classic Reprint) by : Thomas Forsyth Hunt
Download or read book Suggestions to the Settler in California (Classic Reprint) written by Thomas Forsyth Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions to the Settler in California In order to assist a new settler in California, a table has been prepared, from such data as are available, showing the yields that may be expected when the crop is grown by a competent man in a location adapted to it. The figures given below may be said to represent the best judgment of those who, through actual experience and observa tion, are competent to judge. The figures are in no sense official. Too much emphasis cannot be placed upon the fact that the figures given in the table opposite are intended to apply to average land and not to the best land adapted to any particular crop. There are large areas in California Where five tons of alfalfa per annum may be deemed a safe estimate and where competent men would not under take to raise alfalfa if they did not expect six tons per acre. On the other hand, there are some areas where much smaller yields may be considered satisfactory. The chief purpose of this table is to emphasize the teaching that the large yields which are obtained under very favorable conditions are not a true business guide. It is necessary to recognize that only fractions of such possible yields are obtained ordinarily in actual practice. Our purpose is not to try to state what yield may be obtained under each given condition of soil and climate, but to give a sort of working basis for reasonable estimation. Thus if in a given region, on a particular type of soil, one determines that it has been found possible to get a yield of thirteen tons of alfalfa per acre, tons of alfalfa would be a safe estimate for business purposes on the basis above stated. If, on the other hand, eight tons were found to be an extraordinary yield, then tons are all that could be safely expected as an average. However, it must always be kept in mind that the competent man may hope to secure better yields. The second and third columns in the following table are the ones to which the reader should give his chief attention.
