Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing numbers of college and university graduates from Africa’s tertiary institutions and the declining prospects for jobs in the public and private sector have reinforced the importance of creating avenues for self-employment. But job creation exposes a serious gap in education policies, for basic skills in entrepreneurship are not taught in most tertiary curricula across the continent. This nineteen-chapter volume provides essential course text material for developing the field of entrepreneurship in tertiary institutions, thus addressing the issue of appropriate pedagogy critical for the emerging field of entrepreneurship development in higher education institutions in Africa. Drawing from Nigeria, West Africa and other parts of the developing world, the volume furnishes much needed empirical information to fashion out appropriate policies and projects within macroeconomic framework to nurture small and medium enterprises as a development tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Zambia's recent growth has been impressive, it has not been accompanied with adequate job creation. To be sustainable and to create productive employment for its people, growth needs to be accompanied by structural transformation. Such transformation entails a growing share of manufacturing output in the economy. Light Manufacturing in Zambia shows that Zambia has the potential to become regionally competitive in several light manufacturing subsectors by leveraging its comparative advantage in natural resource industries such as agriculture, livestock, and forestry. Light Manufacturing in Zambia has several innovative features. First, it provides in-depth cost comparisons between Zambia and four other countries in Asia and Africa at sector and product levels. Second, the book uses a wide array of quantitative and qualitative techniques to identify key constraints to enterprises and to evaluate differences in the performance of firms across countries. Third, it uses a focused approach to identify country- and industry- specific constraints. Fourth, it highlights the interconnectedness of constraints and solutions. For example, solving the manufacturing input problem requires actions in agriculture, education, and infrastructure. This book suggests directing government policies toward removing constraints in a few of the most promising light manufacturing sectors using practical and innovative solutions inspired by the fast-growing Asian economies whose starting point 20 years ago was not very different from Zambia's today. Growing production of light manufacturing goods would allow Zambia to capture more value from its raw materials and create more jobs.

Book excerpt: This paper will endeavour to briefly describe how the use of market information systems through mobile phones can promote agribusiness and improve the socio-economic welfare of small-scale farmers in rural areas. Generally, Zambian small-scale farmers can produce food and breed quality livestock. However, lack of access to reliable and up-to-date market price information is a serious problem for smallholder farmers in Zambia.

Antecedent benefits include; increased capital inflow and investment, high labour productivity, high output, employment and high incomes. The foregoing, enhance the host country's economic growth. In Zambia, the mining sector dominates FDI inflows compared to other sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and natural resources, transport and construction. Despite being the highest recipient of FDI in the country, the mining sector contributes less towards job creation and skills development than other sectors with less FDI such as agriculture which employs over 80% of the rural people. Indicatively, Zambia's large number of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of which over 98% of its private sector are rural based involved in agricultural production, wholesale or retail trading, etc., working side by side with large scale enterprises, most of whom, are foreign with large capital investments. However, the MSMEs' sector despite creating majority jobs, is characterised by low productivity and incomes resulting in the majority of the population still trapped in poverty staggering at 60.5%.
