It is also impossible to observe her without seeing the wonderful gradation of animated beings, up to the most perfect of her creatures, each possessing properties fitted for its particular purposes, and endued with faculties adapted to the necessities of its peculiar class. Man alone seems to possess the power of reflecting on this great panorama, of comparing its endless harmonies and beauties, and of deducing conclusions, often favourable only to his own fancies which will probably be more or less correct, according to the degree of his intelligence, and to the extent of his education and study. It is, therefore, not extraordinary that amongst those whose minds have been left to receive their impression from chance or accident, many may have imbibed wrong notions; and to this may in some measure be traced the origin of many of our popular superstitions.
