Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Highway Pavements, Maintenance and Reconstruction: A Discussion of General Principles Illustrated by Current and Recommended Practice This book is the second of a series of volumes presenting the road problem from the standpoint of the constructing engineer. It completes the text book portion of the series. This volume contains basic data ordinarily used in the design, construction, maintenance and reconstruction of rural highways. The object of this book is to emphasize and illustrate the application of well recognized engineering principles which have been more or less befogged by non-technical propaganda. The method adopted includes development of tentative theory illustrated by typical reports covering the usual problems. Specific examples of actual practice are given throughout the text showing that if advantage is taken of the technical knowledge of engineers in connection with design and type selection, the mileage of programs can often be increased at least 10 per cent over what is actually obtained under a system of rigidly standardized and stereotyped design. Furthermore if legislatures will have foresight enough to follow engineering advice in raising funds for maintenance and renewal the total final cost of the road systems can be reduced at least 20 per cent below the usual reported costs. The main value of this book probably lies in its definite design data, its discussions of the suitability of different pavements considering maintenance, renewal and motor vehicle operating costs, and in the selected official reports which apply the general principles of design to specific cases. Acknowledgement is made of the courteous cooperation of highway departments, material industries and individual engineers and authors in furnishing data for this manuscript. I wish particularly to acknowledge the constructive criticism of G. G. Miller, H. G. Hotchkiss, C. M. Edwards and Herbert Michaels. Readers are to suggest additions or corrections which will make the book more useful to highway engineers. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In road projects, the pavement construction is very expensive and, therefore, the design and subsequent construction must make a proper balance between the cost and the sustainability. During the operation and maintenance period, the costs for routine maintenance (as and when pavement damage occurs) are to be kept as low as possible as there is less control towards cost of the periodic maintenance (mandatory at a contractual interval, normally 5 years). The reduction in cost for routine maintenance will relieve the project authorities from unexpected expenditures. This comprehensive text on Pavement Engineering is up-to-date with industry standards and best practices and offers an exhaustive coverage on design, construction and maintenance of pavements. The book has followed AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, 1993, besides meeting latest code provisions and pavement design methods recommended by Indian Roads Congress (IRC) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This book has all standard topics on the subject, but differs from all other books in respect of following contents: • Pavement Engineering and Highway Geometrics • Design of Flexible Bituminous/Asphalt Pavement • Design of Rigid Concrete Pavement • Construction of Flexible Bituminous/Asphalt Pavement • Construction of Rigid Concrete Pavement • Maintenance of Flexible Bituminous/Asphalt Pavement • Maintenance of Rigid Concrete Pavement • Maintenance of other Road, Drainage and Bridge features This book refers to the web uploaded volume ‘User’s Guide for Computer Applications’ at web site www.roadbridgedesign.com to help readers learn various computer applications in pavement engineering. This book is designed to serve as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering, Highway Engineering and Traffic and Transportation Engineering. TARGET AUDIENCE • BE/B.Tech, ME/MS/M.Tech (Civil Engineering and Transportation/ Highway Engineering) • Professionals of Highway/Road Construction Industry

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Location, Construction, and Maintenance of Roads Highway engineers in all parts of the Country generously con tributed material and advice. Special attention was paid' to ascertaining reasons for unusual methods, in order to avoid the publication of anything useful only in restricted localities and possibly leading to trouble if tried generally. The purpose was to furnish information Of a national value rather than an expres sion of the views Of a few individuals, who inevitably have per sonal preferences and prejudices. As each section was finished it was submitted for criticism to engineers or chemists with special knowledge of the subjects discussed, and most of the chap ters formed by combining these revised sections were sent out to other engineers for further criticism. Some of the chapters were revised a number of times before they were finally ap proved. As a consequence, although my name appears as the author on the title page, the book is rather the product Of the cooperation Of over fifty Of the leading American highway engi neers and the patient and intelligent handling Of the details of the work by Miss Isabelle Stockett, at the time chief clerk Of the American Highway Association. This book appeared originally as Part II of the 1917 Good Roads Year Book. Its wide circulation, the many references to it in technical journals, and its use as a textbook by engineering colleges, indicating that the volume had won a distinct position in technical literature, led the Directors of the American High way Association to assign the copyright to the D. Van N ostrand Company, when the Association was dissolved a few days ago. By this action the results Of the cooperative labors of so many specialists will remain available to the public. Book excerpt: The states of the world invest very much money for the construction and maintenance of roads since roads are considered very important in the transportation sector as an indispensable tool. Roads are used to transport goods and persons from one place to anotherSo the process of maintenance management for roads networks is considered very important because it needs various kinds of resources. This process must be completed with a very high degree of accuracy to achieve more profit of available resources and to keep on the acceptable level of service for these road networks.therefore, the significance of this book lies in dealing with an important area of the constructional and urban development, which is the flexible pavement maintenance operations.
