Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the most current research findings on the economic, demographic, fiscal, and social consequences of rapid growth in rural communities and offers strategies that can be used to mitigate the often disruptive impact of that growth. While working extensively with government officials and citizens in rural communities, Drs. Weber and Howell became aware of the need for a compilation and synthesis of the research on rural growth; they subsequently invited scholars working in selected topic areas to contribute to that effort. The resulting papers were refined during a meeting sponsored by the Western Rural Development Center, edited, and brought together in this volume. Incorporating 1980 census data, the book outlines the spectrum of changes associated with rapid growth in rural areas, presents specific options for managing rapid growth, and suggests a model that communities can use for impact assessment and for monitoring the effectiveness of various management strategies.

Book excerpt: The vastness and isolation of the American West forged a dependence on scarce natural resources especially water, forests, fish, and minerals. Today, the internet is shaping another revolution, and it promises both obstacles and opportunity. Seeking to understand the impact of a global society on western small towns, the author, director of the Western Rural Development Center at Utah State University, conducted strategic planning roundtables in thirteen states. The gatherings brought three major concerns to the surface: sustaining natural resources, creating vibrant rural economies, and enhancing educational and employment prospects. Rethinking Rural provides an overview of western environmental history and explores the roundtable challenges, offering guidance to community leaders, policy makers, and scholars seeking ways to address poverty, increasing inequality, and shifting demographics, as well as resource management and conservation issues.

Book excerpt: Millions of Americans are moving west, attracted by big skies, majestic scenery, abundant wildlife, and a romantic past. Unfortunately, many developments built to accommodate these newcomers flout the landscape and ignore local traditions threatening the very qualities that make the West beautiful and unique. It is not too late to prevent more damage and preserve the best of the West for future generations. True West translates the key elements of authentic Western development patterns-drawn from Native American, Spanish, and early American settlements-into design guidelines for expansion and new development. Comprehensive case studies examine contemporary developments that embrace historic patterns and harmonize with the landscape.True West is an exceptional resource for Western Planners and elected officials who are committed to ensuring growth that respects the region's distinctive character and natural environment.

Book excerpt: Rural America is at a crossroads in its economic development. Like regions of other First World nations, the traditional economic base of rural communities in the United States is rapidly deteriorating. Natural resources, including agriculture, show little prospect for generating future job growth, and manufacturing has become a new source of instability. Faced with these changes and an increasing vulnerability to international economic events, rural communities have begun to seek high-technology industries and advanced services as candidates for job growth and economic stability. What is the potential for high-tech growth outside the largest cities? What is the role of high-tech industry in the economic development of non-metropolitan America? This book provides a hard-nosed look at the high-tech potential in rural economic development. Some of the questions Glasmeier addresses include: Are rural areas attractive to high tech? Will high tech follow earlier patterns and filter down the lowest-paid jobs to rural areas? Will rural communities be bypassed completely for even lower-wage Third World locations?Glasmeier answers in a sober analysis that separates fact from myth. Empirical data reveals the kinds of high-tech jobs that locate in rural areas, and the kinds of rural areas that attract high-tech jobs. This analysis leads to a highly critical evaluation of state and local economic development policy and recommendations for its improvement. This book is a must for policymakers, practitioners, scholars, and an informed public interested in the promise of high tech and the future of US economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to rural communities when their traditional economic base collapses? When new money comes in, who gets left behind? Pushed Out offers a rich portrait of Dover, Idaho, whose transformation from “thriving timber mill town” to “economically depressed small town” to “trendy second-home location” over the past four decades embodies the story and challenges of many other rural communities. Sociologist Ryanne Pilgeram explores the structural forces driving rural gentrification and examines how social and environmental inequality are written onto these landscapes. Based on in-depth interviews and archival data, she grounds this highly readable ethnography in a long view of the region that takes account of geological history, settler colonialism, and histories of power and exploitation within capitalism. Pilgeram’s analysis reveals the processes and mechanisms that make such communities vulnerable to gentrification and points the way to a radical justice that prioritizes the economic, social, and environmental sustainability necessary to restore these communities.
