Book Synopsis Rural development by : Kristof Van Assche
Download or read book Rural development written by Kristof Van Assche and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique perspective on rural development, by discussing the most influential perspectives and rendering their risks and benefits visible. The authors do not present a silver bullet. Rather, they give students, researchers, community leaders, politicians, concerned citizens and development organizations the conceptual tools to understand how things are organized now, which development path has already been taken, and how things could possibly move in a different direction. Van Assche and Hornidge pay special attention to the different roles of knowledge in rural development, both expert knowledge in various guises and local knowledge. Crafting development strategies requires understanding how new knowledge can fit in and work out in governance. Drawing on experiences in five continents, the authors develop a theoretical framework which elucidates how modes of governance and rural development are inextricably tied. A community is much better placed to choose direction, when it understands these ties.

Book excerpt: Development schemes are common throughout the third world. Many fail, but the reasons for failure or success are only too often not adequately studied. In this monograph two schemes started in Basutoland - now Lesotho - are intensively analysed and compared: the first, which was abandoned in 1961, primarily by means of documentary material; the second, which was and still is successful in at least part of the area, mainly through observation and field research. The analysis reveals the factors making for success or failure, particularly in the fields of politics, economics, and communication. The relevance of the study extends beyond Lesotho and even Africa, the analysis dealing with problems common to introduced social change and development in any part of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the demands of the new innovative, sustainable and inclusive rural development paradigm, the monograph raises the discussion regarding new approaches and success factors that are vital in current rural socio-economic development and policy transformations. The bottom-up policymaking, self-organization, creative use of knowledge in rural areas, and many other rural innovations are aligned in this book with new social movements’ theories, which help disclose, explore and explain the rural development paradigm shift. Rural development forces of the 21st century center on the agents of change - rural population, and, surprisingly - urban population(!), and the political debate concerning EU Common Agricultural Policy and European Green Deal, illustrated with multiple case studies. This book will be of interest to a broad audience of readers, keen on scientific, political, and practical issues of innovations in rural areas and their future development pathways. The monograph is authored by a team of scholars from the Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences, Institute of Economics and Rural Development, Department of Rural Development.

Book Synopsis Rural Development: By the People, For the People by : Ramprasad Kundu
Download or read book Rural Development: By the People, For the People written by Ramprasad Kundu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph is a study on "Rural Development: By the People, For the People" which is basically based on People's participation that means people are closely involved in economic, social, cultural and political process that affect their lives. Human Development stresses the need to invest in human capabilities and to ensure that the capabilities are used for the benefit of all. The book is also related to the new concept of economic development that contradicts the conventional wisdom that the Gross Development Product (GDP) or per capita GDP is the only measure of wellbeing of the people of a country. Though a few studies are based on village or block level analysis, most of them are at macro-level, i.e., district or state level. Role of governmental and non-governmental organizations in rural development is a hot topic for debate in the changing global perspective. However, this topic has never been studied rigorously and hence there is a lack of literature. This study analyzed, in detail, the role of people's participation with the help of different organizations in the community development, by considering a case of a developing country.
