After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? The United States Bureau of Education, Bulletin 1913, No. 58, The Educational System of Rural Denmark, says: Country teachers are all provided with free homes. These range from three-room suites in the case of unmarried women teachers to seven or eight rooms for married men. The suites are built, as a rule, in connection with the main school building, using either the second floor or a wing on the first floor. Where more than one teacher lives in the building each suite of rooms invariably has its own separate entrance. This system of teacher housing is very successful and means much for the teacher and for community leadership. Another thing of interest is that all teachers are entitled under the law to a garden. This is planned and planted to shrubbery and fruit at community expense. The garden may vary from a small lot to nearly an acre of ground. In a few instances women teachers accept a sum of money in lieu of the garden. Not alone do the gardens supplement the teachers' incomes, but they are often used as experimental plats for the schools as well. Such schools provided as they are for housing the teachers and making their lives attractive and wholesome, naturally become the rallying centers for all community activities. A sketch of the arrangement of class room, living quarters, play grounds and gardens in a typical one teacher rural school in Den mark is shown on page 8. The level of living of any family as a production and consumption or social - participating unit is definitely a function of the relationship of that family to the other individuals and other fami lies in the community. Consequently, it has frequently been maintained that the community should be the smallest unit to be considered in any effort to alter living conditions. Occasionally Governments or private individuals have attempted to create better communities. It cannot be said that all such plans have had exactly the same objective, but certain ly all of them have had as their final goal a more abundant life. Although no two conceptions of the abundant life may concur, there has been agree ment of Opinion that the proposed programs should contribute to a higher level of living, both material and non-material. During the last 4 years the Federal Government of the United States has tried its hand at building new communities. Many important considerations led the Government to undertake this new and extremely difficult venture. The most far - reaching depression in history had brought uncertainty and poverty to millions. The laissez - faire system of settlement and exploitation of natural resources had left in its wake a toll of exhausted and eroded agricultural lands, depleted forests, and stranded families and villages. There was too much raw material and large inventories of stored manufactured goods on the one hand, and, on the other hand, people were practically starving and freezing. In short, society seemed to be decidedly out of joint. Few realistic thinkers believed that resettlement of the families on new or already plowed lands would bring Utopia. It was maintained, however, that much could be accomplished if man were brought into a better relationship with land. Tillage of certain lands should be discontinued and other lands brought into different usage. Families living on relief money should be given an opportunity to earn at least part of their living through work. The high rate of tenancy which the era of exploitation hadencouraged was proclaimed undesirable. It should be attacked. When possible a farmer or part - time farmer should work a farm that he could call his own. Ownership, it was maintained, made for stability because it gave the owner status in the community and contributed toward a more abundant life. To these and other ends resettlement projects were initiated by the Division of Subsistence Homesteads and by the Resettle ment and Federal Emergency Relief Administrations, to be completed and carried on by the Works Progress and the Farm Security Administrations. We find that 90 per cent. Of the communities surveyed are located on at least one 'railroad line, while 19 per cent. Of this population are served by trolley facilities and 96 per cent. Of the population under study have rural free delivery. These means of communication are the basis of the interaction of minds, and they are the most general avenues of common response to common stimuli. Whatever common action there may be in this whole population is conditioned by these factors. One other element in this system of communication by roads Should be mentioned. Generally through this region the roads are the ordinary country road, but the State of Pennsylvania is rapidly building stone roads, and this region is under swift transformation as a result of those processes. The effect, however, of the new roads cannot yet be socially registered. It will have much to do with increasing the common response and intensify ing the social character of the population.
