Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being Myself is a contemplative exploration of the essential nature of our self. Everyone has the sense of ‘being myself,' but not everyone knows their self clearly. In most cases, our sense of self is mixed up with the content of experience and, as a result, its natural condition of peace and happiness is veiled. Through investigation and analogy, the meditations in this collection take us back to our true nature again and again, until we begin to find our self naturally and effortlessly established there, as that. In time, experience loses its capacity to veil our being, and its innate peace and joy emerge from the background of experience. * * * The Essence of Meditation Series presents meditations on the essential, non-dual understanding that lies at the heart of all the great religious and spiritual traditions, compiled from contemplations led by Rupert Spira at his meetings and retreats. This simple, contemplative approach, which encourages a clear seeing of one’s experience rather than any kind of effort or discipline, leads the reader to an experiential understanding of their own essential being and the peace and fulfilment that are inherent within it.

Book excerpt: The Irish Times: Best Book of the Year New York Times Book Review: Editor's Choice The Times (UK): Book of the Week Pick Foreword Reviews: Book of the Day Pick Conde Nast Traveler: Best Book of the Season Pick Set on the eve of the financial crash of 2008, this evocative novel is made up of three stories linked by time and place, and also by the moving, unexpected interactions of a rich cast of characters. Barcelona Dreaming is narrated, in turn, by an English woman who runs a gift shop, an alcoholic jazz pianist, and a translator tormented by unrequited love, all of whose lives will be changed forever. Underpinning the novel, and casting a long shadow, is a crime committed against a young Moroccan immigrant. Exploring themes of addiction, racism, celebrity, immigration, and self-delusion, and fueled by a longing for the unattainable and a nostalgia for what is about to be lost, Barcelona Dreaming is a love letter to one of the world’s most beautiful cities and a powerful and poignant fable for our uncertain times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Observer, PopMatters, and Sydney Morning Herald. The true story of a love affair between two extraordinary women becomes a literary tour deforce in this novel that recreates the surrealist movement in Paris and the horrors of the two world wars with a singular incandescence and intimacy. In the years preceding World War I, two young women meet, by chance, in a provincial town in France. Suzanne Malherbe, a shy seventeen-year-old with a talent for drawing, is completely entranced by the brilliant but troubled Lucie Schwob, who comes from a family of wealthy Jewish intellectuals. They embark on a clandestine love affair, terrified they will be discovered, but then, in an astonishing twist of fate, the mother of one marries the father of the other. As “sisters” they are finally free of suspicion, and, hungry for a more stimulating milieu, they move to Paris at a moment when art, literature, and politics blend in an explosive cocktail. Having reinvented themselves as Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, they move in the most glamorous social circles, meeting everyone from Hemingway and Dalí to André Breton, and produce provocative photographs that still seem avant-garde today. In the 1930s, with the rise of anti-Semitism and threat of fascism, they leave Paris for Jersey, and it is on this idyllic island that they confront their destiny, creating a campaign of propaganda against Hitler’s occupying forces that will put their lives in jeopardy. Brilliantly imagined, profoundly thought-provoking, and ultimately heartbreaking, Never Anyone But You infuses life into a forgotten history as only great literature can.

Book excerpt: How the world's most powerful media mogul really thinks The third book in Portfolio's new series looks at Rupert Murdoch, the controversial chairman and CEO of News Corp. He is the subject of endless gossip, speculation, and criticism, but what really drives his bold (and usually successful) gambles? Based on comments from News Corp. executives and competitors, and interviews with Wall Street analysts, investors, and other media experts, Paul La Monica's book explores some of the most fascinating questions about Murdoch. For instance: How did he grow a small Australian newspaper company into a global media empire? Why did he challenge the TV establishment with the Fox Network and Fox News Channel—for profits or for deeper reasons? Did his obsession with The Wall Street Journal lead him to overpay for Dow Jones? How has he dealt with detractors and enemies, including Ted Turner and John Malone? Was he smart to acquire MySpace to launch his Internet strategy? Why does he still work so hard at age 77 with a net worth of $8.8 billion and nothing to prove?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prince Rupert's Drop book presents a timeless plot. An atheist sets out on a journey to disprove God's existence. Things don't turn out exactly as planned. The book's central character, Rupert Austin, plays both antagonist and protagonist in equal measure. The former as a dark and disturbed boy with no empathy, no compassion, no love, and no guilt for any of it. Rupert has only one emotion, fear, and from there, fear's timeless bedfellow, hate. You see, Rupert is a severely autistic multiple savant. He's statistically one out of ten billion since the dawn of man. A child that talks at birth, won't feed from the breast, won't open its eyes, covers its ears, and lashes out to communicate displeasure because it can't stand the noise of its own voice. Such a child would die on its own of starvation, be culled as weak, or be persecuted as a witch/demon. But most importantly, if the child survived long enough to get the strength, Rupert's lot would kill itself. Every single time... The setting is in the mid-twenty-first century. It's the time of a sweeping American revival called the Wildfire. Outside America, the world is literally in flames due to massive uprisings of isolated ghettos. We follow Rupert through high school. He shuns a loving mother and is manipulated by an abusive father. He is adopted by a classmate to be protected and tamed. She is largely successful until she unwittingly leads Rupert into an exorcism by a spin-off Christian cult. Rupert almost dies. Rupert seeks revenge. To get it, he will attempt to destroy the thriving mythology of a higher power. If you clip the tail, the head will die. Prince Rupert's drop. Rupert seeks out a partner for his proposed crime against humanity—Winchester Carnagie II, the richest man alive. Together they will exploit the world's most powerful computer. She's a sentient computer and performs heinous acts to achieve their goal, ridding man of God. The computer is narcistic and a sociopath. She has even less empathy than Rupert—in the beginning. But Rupert is asked a curious question during his rampage: "You a Judas, a Saul, or a Paul?" On the road to Damascus. This is a story about a doctor healing himself and not knowing it. On Rupert's misguided path, he's a coconspirator in horrific genocide, shameless execution, and a general disregard for life. That will change. Not only will the doctor heal himself; he will release a deluge on the world's inferno.

This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book interrogates how districts were used in British North America to inspect, and document indigenous people by the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC). In particular, it examines how the HBC utilized districts to create a political geography that allowed for closer surveillance of indigenous people and stabilized debt. An initial examination of how the district was used to rework earlier 18th-century conducts of observation into the more ordered and spatially limited regime of inspection is undertaken, followed by an investigation of how the district became central to the HBC’s efforts to limit the movement of indigenous people, individualize hunters, and spur ‘industriousness’. The book points to how districts became key to a number of colonial projects, laying the infrastructure for the modern reserve system in Canada. In this sense, the book provides a critical genealogy of how the command of space and social vision shaped Canada’s colonial geography.
