Book excerpt: "This was my first experience with the urgency of 'fleeing' in the most immediate and literal sense. It was only then that I could fully imagine the terror felt by my family and other refugees during their escape from Rwanda in the 1990s, when they resisted forced repatriation by hiding in the forests of Tanzania. In that breathless moment on the tarmac in 2002, I felt the visceral terror of what it really means to be a refugee just as they had, terrorized by the harsh realities of being nationless, propelled forever onward in flight."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015 University Press of Mississippi published Mississippi Fiddle Tunes and Songs from the 1930s by Harry Bolick and Stephen T. Austin to critical acclaim and commercial success. Roughly half of Mississippi’s rich, old-time fiddle tradition was documented in that volume and Harry Bolick has spent the intervening years working on this book, its sequel. Beginning with Tony Russell’s original mid-1970s fieldwork as a reference, and later working with Russell, Bolick located and transcribed all of the Mississippi 78 rpm string band recordings. Some of the recording artists like the Leake County Revelers, Hoyt Ming and His Pep Steppers, and Narmour & Smith had been well known in the state. Others, like the Collier Trio, were obscure. This collecting work was followed by many field trips to Mississippi searching for and locating the children and grandchildren of the musicians. Previously unheard recordings and stories, unseen photographs and discoveries of nearly unknown local fiddlers, such as Jabe Dillon, John Gatwood, Claude Kennedy, and Homer Grice, followed. The results are now available in this second, companion volume, Fiddle Tunes from Mississippi: Commercial and Informal Recordings, 1920–2018. Two hundred and seventy musical examples supplement the biographies and photographs of the thirty-five artists documented here. Music comes from commercial recordings and small pressings of 78 rpm, 45 rpm, and LP records; collectors’ field recordings; and the musicians’ own home tape and disc recordings. Taken together, these two volumes represent a delightfully comprehensive survey of Mississippi’s fiddle tunes.

Book excerpt: Times have been tough for young Lady Canèda Lang and her brother Harry and they neither seek not expect help from the aristocratic French family that ostracised their mother Clémentine de Bantôme in their outrage at her running away to marry their father, Gerald Lang, whom they considered beneath her.Worse still, the couple incurred the wrath of the much older and powerful Duc de Saumac, to whom Clémentine was betrothed and so a bitter vendetta began. Then, overnight, Harry discovers that he is now an Earl! He has unexpectedly inherited the Earldom of Langstone with an ancestral Castle and a large and prosperous estate. Hearing the news, their French grandmother invites them to stay – evidently the de Bantômes have fallen on hard times themselves and now have the nerve to ask for help. Apparently their vines have contracted the deadly phylloxera disease that is ravaging vineyards all over Europe and has badly damaged the family’s finances. Harry is determined to refuse the invitation, but Canèda is set on journeying to the Dordogne to meet the family and the Duc de Saumac – and to wreak her revenge on them for all the years of misery they have caused.. But on arrival it is not hatred but love that she finds in beautiful Périgord!

Book excerpt: Today most students with disabilities are either educated in special education classes located on general education campuses or mainstreamed individually into general education classes. Often, however, a lack of understanding of the disability exists in the minds of students and teachers, causing them to make generalizations concerning the person or persons with disabilities. To facilitate understanding and foster friendships, integration should begin in the elementary schools. For when an individual takes the time to get to know someone, he or she can appreciate the fact that each person has unique strengths and qualities to offer. Elvins Friends demonstrates, not only how someone with a disability can excel and teach others, but also how friendships can form when two people stop to take the time to get to know each other.

Book excerpt: Some may claim that they've had moments of deja vu, or the uncanny ability to see what is about to happen, like determining the end of a movie, or feeling like you have been somewhere before, based on nothing but intuition. However, what if you could acquire a prescreening of your future, would you? Or would you prefer whatever happens, happens without your destiny ever being revealed? Well, for Hope Wilson, that was never an option. Considering it both a blessing and a curse, she marches through life alone understanding those same premonitions will lead her ever closer to the man she will eventually meet and fall in love with. Often described as a selfless woman, Hope donates much of her time and money to the less fortunate, aiding anyone in need, even knowing her destined path is about to change. That is when John walks in, a man who is looking for his own purpose, while he himself searches for that one special person who will stand beside him through it all. With the love and support of her family and friends like Elvin, John's college roommate, and Liz, Hope's best friend, they embrace what life offers, with all the normalcies of life's twists and turns. And even though Hope strictly adheres to her rule of her not changing anyone's futures, they each optimistically focus on their tomorrows. How will it all turn out? Only Hope knows.

This book was released on 2007-11-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive, decision making bodies must consider the environmental effects of projects before allowing them to proceed. As the House of Commons will be asked, at Third Reading, to approve the building of Crossrail this document aims to inform the debate by summarising the work that has been done to assess, control and mitigate the environmental impacts of the scheme. It also explains why the Government takes the view that the project is worthy of support. It covers: the environmental statement; role of the Select Committee; the general approach to the control and mitigation of environmental impacts; post-mitigation impacts; the need for and benefits of Crossrail; and human rights. The appendices, which form the bulk of the document, include a summary of the reason for the Governments support of the project; a list of Information Papers and other sources of information; and examples of correspondence on the consideration of alternatives.
