Book excerpt: Ruminations is a collection of poems that were all written in 2021. Covid-19 was ravaging the world and most of us were stuck at home. The first poem, “Sweetheart”, was written on my wedding anniversary. Typically, I go to our backyard to make a rose bouquet for my wife. This year, there were no roses in the garden. Fearing how my wife would react prompted me to write this poem. I shared the poem with my siblings who were all taken aback that I could write poetry. They encouraged me to write more. And my journey in verse began. I cannot say I am a poet but I did discover that I was able to take everyday life situations and put them in verse. Hence the title “Ruminations, Flashes of Thoughts, Sentiments and Emotions”. I then shared with other family members and friends and the reaction was encouraging. I also started blogging. I now have written just under 300 poems in 2021. Not sure if this will be a lifelong passion or not. Time will tell. But I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s I have pursued three separate but overlapping and sometimes simultaneous careers: (1) philosopher / writer / teacher / historian of the long nineteenth century, 1789-1914; (2) editor / translator / photographer / publisher / biographer / encyclopedist; (3) cataloging librarian / rare books and special collections librarian / historian of medicine. Somehow these three vocations have garnered me some acclaim, even an entry in Who's Who in America. Each of them has resulted in some published or presented works. Because these works have been scattered in a wide variety of venues, some of which have gone out of print or have otherwise become generally unavailable - and of course with the oral presentations being gone as soon as they are given - I have thought it wise to select, epitomize, and bring them together in one place - here. Thus, what follows in these volumes is what I consider to be the most important of my shorter works.

Book excerpt: This short story collection set in the desert southwest features spiritual themes. What do terracotta suns have to do with racism? Is a little bliss worse than no bliss at all? Who is The Alchemist, the one turning things to gold, the one concocting elixirs, or the one seeking immortality? Soon the road was little more than a path, winding like a snake through the creosote, century plants and desert spoons. I walked on for a while, my footsteps the only noise. It must have been over 100o out there, but it didn't seem to bother me much. There was no wind. I stopped and stood still, listening to the sun seep into the sandy soil, watching the occasional bird glide silently over the empty land, then I turned around. I never did find Peter, but by the time I got back to the truck, my head was all full of knowing. - - Amazon.

Gifted—and bullied for being different—he hopes moving away to study will mean a change for the better. Instead, he encounters the unexpected, when strange things start happening in his room—the blinds falling down by themselves and notes from an illiterate prankster. Add to this the myth of the haunted third floor, and cynical Josh has had just about enough when Sean Tierney arrives, three days late and with not a penny to his name. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, bonded by their passion for learning and compassion for others. But will their intellectual prowess be enough to solve, once and for all, the mystery of the third floor? * * * * * Ruminations is a stand-alone prequel (novel) to Hiding Behind The Couch. This story follows chronologically from Beginnings (Prequel Novella) and is continued in Hiding Behind The Couch (Season One).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Au Natural is a collection of essays by Lucille Bertuccio, long-time president and co-founder of The Center for Sustainable Living based in Bloomington Indiana. These essays focus not only on the beauty and diversity of the Earth as expressed locally by its myriad flora and fauna but also on living sustainably to protect this planet and its creatures. While reflecting on the lives of insects, birds, and bats these stories also play the role of cautionary tales calling on us to change our behavior. Included are paeans to earth, air, water, and fire, the elements necessary to life on Earth, which modern humans have (for the most part) ignored, damaged, and devastated. Beyond this idealistic view of the potential of living in harmony with the Earth, Ms. Bertuccio's essays invite us to open ourselves to the potentialities within ourselves by seeing the broad range and scope of life on this planet.

Book excerpt: Peregrinations, Ruminations, and Regenerations: A Critical Approach to Doctor Who examines the famous BBC science fiction show as a cultural artifact in dialogue with other science fiction, with politics and religion, and with the culture at large, both in terms of how it reflects and comments upon that culture and in terms of the audience and the peculiarities of its response. This book enables researchers in film and media to make historical, industrial, aesthetic, and ideological connections between and among Doctor Who and other shows and historical events since its inception in 1963. This volume is a new entry in a relatively new area. As the young fans of Doctor Who have matured, and as many have become scholars, they are returning to the show to consider it from a scholarly perspective. It is also of use in the media studies classroom to address directly the issues presented by the longest running science fiction show in the history of the medium. Peregrinations, Ruminations, and Regenerations considers not only cultural ramifications and connections, but audience studies as well.

Book excerpt: Ruminations of a Catholic School Girl is a compendium of random thoughts on food, love, sex, shopping, marriage, divorce, death, rebirth, the existential vacuum and music through essays, notes passed in class, and diary entries. With vivid imagery and sardonic commentary, brings to life the story of a Boomer from Long Island, Gwen Patrick (the author's alter-ego), who loves shoes, Beaujolais, shopping, food and most of all - food, family and friends. Chronicling her life from her first experience with parochial school in the 60s through her son Zimmerman's high school years, it tells the story of a Long Island boomers experience and continuing journey. With references to Plutarch and Popeye, the Bible and Sex and the City, Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Opera, Gwen's journey will resonate with women of any age - and men who understand the importance of having the right mustard for their pastrami.
