Book excerpt: In the wake of England's break with Rome and gradual reformation, English Catholics took root outside of the country, in Catholic countries across Europe. Their arrival and the foundation of convents and colleges on the Continent as attracted scholarly attention. However, we need to understand their impact beyond that initial moment of change. Confessional Mobility, therefore, looks at the continued presence of English Catholics abroad and how the English Catholic community was shaped by these cross-Channel connections. Corens proposes a new interpretative model of 'confessional mobility'. She opens up the debate to include pilgrims, grand tour travellers, students, and mobile scholars alongside exiles. The diversity of mobility highlights that those abroad were never cut off or isolated on the Continent. Rather, through correspondence and constant travel, they created a community without borders. This cross-Channel community was not defined by its status as victims of persecution, but provided the lifeblood for English Catholics for generations. Confessional Mobility also incorporates minority Catholics more closely into the history of the Counter-Reformation. Long side-lined as exceptions to the rule of a hierarchical, triumphant, territorial Catholic Church, English Catholic have seldom been recognised as an instrumental part in the wider Counter-Reformation. Attention to movement and mission in the understanding of Catholics incorporates minority Catholics alongside extra-European missions and reinforces current moves to decentre Counter-Reformation scholarship.

Book excerpt: This book explores changing gender and religious roles for Catholic men and women in the British Isles from Henry VIII’s break with the Catholic Church in 1534 to full emancipation in 1829. Filled with richly detailed stories, such as the suppression of Mary Ward’s Institute of English Ladies, it explores how Catholics created and tested new understandings of women’s and men’s roles in family life, ritual, religious leadership, and vocation through engaging personal narratives, letters, trial records, and other rich primary sources. Using an intersectional approach, it crafts a compelling narrative of three centuries of religious and social experimentation, adaptation, and change as traditional religious and gender norms became flexible during a period of crisis. The conclusions shed new light on the Catholic Church’s long-term, ongoing process of balancing gendered and religious authority during this period while offering insights into the debates on those topics taking place worldwide today.

Book excerpt: Till the researches of modern historians proved the contrary, a widespread belief existed in this country that the accession of Elizabeth was hailed by the majority of the nation as the deliverance of an enthralled and coerced people from the bondage of Home. In view, however, of known facts, even hostile critics are forced to admit that the final establishment of the tenets of the Heformation ill England was the outcome of a slow process of evolution-assisted, it is true, by a protestant legislature and several favorable local circumstances, but still an evolution-which lasted the greater part of a century. At the outset, little if anything presaged the ultimate and mighty change. The Queen received the congratulations of the episcopate with approbation and caused Masses to be duly sung for her sister's soul. In her own domestic chapel she continued to be present at the angnst sacrifice of the Catholic Church, frequently availed herself of Confession, manifested respect for sacred images and pictures, and was I indulgent to the affectionate practice of praying for the souls of the departed.' In a word, she showed by her whole demeanour her resolution of abiding by her solemn oath to the late Queen' to live and die a true Roman Catholic.'

Book excerpt: Through its missionary, pedagogical, and scientific accomplishments, the Society of Jesus-known as the Jesuits-became one of the first institutions with a truly "global" reach, in practice and intention. The Oxford Handbook of the Jesuits offers a critical assessment of the Order, helping to chart new directions for research at a time when there is renewed interest in Jesuit studies. In particular, the Handbook examines their resilient dynamism and innovative spirit, grounded in Catholic theology and Christian spirituality, but also profoundly rooted in society and cultural institutions. It also explores Jesuit contributions to education, the arts, politics, and theology, among others. The volume is organized in seven major sections, totaling forty articles, on the Order's foundation and administration, the theological underpinnings of its activities, the Jesuit involvement with secular culture, missiology, the Order's contributions to the arts and sciences, the suppression the Order endured in the 18th century, and finally, the restoration. The volume also looks at the way the Jesuit Order is changing, including becoming more non-European and ethnically diverse, with its members increasingly interested in engaging society in addition to traditional pastoral duties.

Book excerpt: Despite the rigorous and continued persecution of the Catholic Faith in England after the Reformation, the teaching and practices of the Church were deeply rooted in the history and hearts of the English people, and many remained loyal to it. Crucial to this achievement were the lives and work of generations of Jesuits of the English Provinces. English Jesuits had come back to their homeland in 1580 to work with the priests already there proclaiming, in Campion's words, nothing but the truths their ancestors had taught. The English mission and Province was inspired and spiritually formed by Campion, martyred in 1581. Hope of bringing the faith back to England faded in 1688 when James II lost his throne. In 1829 the goverment recognized the Church once more, after nearly 300 hundred years of persecution. With the restoration of the hierarchy in 1850 the Church was fully home again; the sacrifice of the martyrs and the stoic courage of the recusants was fully vindicated. By 1880 the English Jesuits had opened nine schools for boys, thirty large city parishes and missions in Latin America and Central and South Africa. The 1914-1918 war ended the era of expansion but, between the wars the schools, parishes and other work were consolidated, while Heythrop College and the new Campion Hall in Oxford were established. The pattern of the Province's work was changing, but down to the 1960s its ethos did not. Fr Bernard Basset, SJ was one of the best known and loved English Jesuits of the 1950s to the 1960s. Academically very able he, like Plater and Martindale before him, found the intellectual apostolate not his real calling. From the 1950s, he saw that this was to help the ordinary laity to better understand and live their faith. This he did, through the lay apostolate, in the Sodality and Cell movements, through parish work and as author, organizer, journalist and expert on the things of God - surrounded by the laughter and love of his friends. A true son of Ignatius, the book here abridged reflects the spirit of the man, the Society and the Province that he loved.
