Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rudiments of a Vocabulary of Egyptian Hieroglyphics The Arabic language was spoken by every nation bordering upon Egypt. We learn from Manetho that the Arabs had extended them selves, by gradual intercourse and imperceptible migration, over a large part of the Delta, whence they were expelled with the Jews, who were of a kindred race, in the time of Moses; and it is pro bable that at an equally early time this language had spread itself along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to Cyrene, and as far as Carthage, and that when Dido ed to that city it was to join an established colony of men speaking her own language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphics With Sign List This little book is intended to form an easy intro duction to the study of the Egyptian hieroglyphic in scriptions, and has been prepared In answer to many requests made both in Egypt and m England. It con tains a short account of the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphics, and a sketch of the hieroglyphic system 'of writing and of the general principles which underlie the use of picture signs to express thought. The main facts of Egyptian grammar are given in a series of short chapters, and these are illustrated by numerous brief extracts from hieroglyphic texts each extract is printed in hieroglyphic type and is accompanied by a transliteration and translation. Following the exam ple of the early Egyptologists it has been thought better to multiply extracts from texts rather than to heap up a large number of grammatical details Without supplying the beginner with the means of examining their application. In the limits of the following pages it would be impossible to treat Egyptian grammar at any length, while the discussion of details would be quite out of place. The chief object has been to make the beginner familiar with' the most common signs and words, so that he may, whilst puzzling out the ex tracts from texts quoted in illustration of grammatical facts, be able to attack the longer connected texts given in my First Steps in Egyptian and in my Egyptian Reading Book. He should note, too, that a few new words learnt correctly each day will, in a short time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Egyptian Hieroglyphic Dictionary, Vol. 1 of 2: With an Index of English Words, King List and Geographical List With Indexes, List of Hieroglyphic Characters, Coptic and Semitic Alphabets, Etc Curiously enough Young did not follow up his discovery by a continued application of his phonetic principle to Egyptian inscriptions other than those on the Rosetta Stone, but seems to have been content to leave its further application and development to Champollion 1e Jeune.2 And for some reason he made no attempt to add to the Egyptian Vocabulary containing 218 words which he published in his article egypt in the Encyclo/xedia Britannica, or if he did, his additions were never printed. On the other hand, he devoted himself to the preparation of a Demotic Dictionary and this work occupied the last ten years of his life. The Advertise ment is of considerable interest, for it shows that it was only his inability to decide upon the system of arrangement that ought to be employed in an Egyptian Dictionary, that prevented him from publishing the work during his lifetime. His difficulty is described by him thus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and accessible approach to learning hieroglyphs, written by an experienced teacher and author. This is the first guide to reading hieroglyphs that begins with Egyptian monuments themselves. Assuming no knowledge on the part of the reader, it shows how to interpret the information on the inscriptions in a step-by-step journey through the script and language of ancient Egypt. We enter the world of the ancient Egyptians and explore their views on life and death, Egypt and the outside world, humanity and the divine. The book draws on texts found on some thirty artifacts ranging from coffins to stelae to obelisks found in museums in Egypt, America, and Europe, and selected across two thousand years. The texts are then explained clearly, and are supported by full translations, photographs, and line drawings.
