Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an interdisciplinary examination of depictions of girlhoods through a comparative study of foundational fairy tales revised and reimagined in popular narrative, film, and television adaptations. The success of franchises such as The Hunger Games, Twilight and Divergence have re-presented the young heroine as an empowered female, and often a warrior hero in her own right. Through a selection of popular culture touchstones this empowerment is questioned as a manipulation of feminist ideals of equality and a continuation of the traditional vision of female awakening centering on issues of personal choice, agency, physical violence, purity, and beauty. By investigating re-occurring storytelling frameworks and archetypes, Untaming Girlhoods examines different portrayals of girlhoods in the 20th- and 21st-century Anglo-American cultural imaginary that configure modern girlhoods, beyond the fairy-tale princess or the damsel in distress, into refigurations that venture away from the well-trodden path for a new breakaway path to authentic selfhood. This will be a useful and enlightening text for students and researchers in Girlhood Studies, Gender Studies, Film Studies, Popular Culture and Media Studies.

Book excerpt: Jake is Midnight Forest Pack's Beta, incredibly popular and handsome, always surrounded by friends, and is successful in business and as his role in pack as Beta. Yet part of his life feels incomplete. Seeing all of his friends settled down with their mates and now having children, Jake can't help but wonder where he went wrong or think if he will forever be alone. Avoidance seems to be the best tactic, and Jake pushes himself harder into work, where an unexpected encounter at a business meeting gets his heart racing and turns his life upside down. Rose, this seemingly perfect, beautiful fated mate of his, has somewhat of an unusual reaction to meeting her mate. Are you meant to be doing your best to avoid your new mate? Or be keeping secrets from him? Not to mention Rose comes from the other side of the world and plans to head home as soon as she can, with promises of keeping in touch, and working things out with time and space. Jake is just happy to finally have his mate, and willing to do all he can to have her by his side. Would Jake be willing to leave all he knows for fate? Or could it be the moon goddess made a mistake, and Jake is better off alone? Or is there a better match out there for him?

Book excerpt: The history of Hudson began in 1795 when David Hudson and five business partners anted up $12,900 for Township 4 Range 10 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, in what is now Northeast Ohio. On June 26, 1799, after traveling two months through the wilderness, he and his small party landed in the Western Reserve. The story moves to establishing churches, schools, businesses, and the Western Reserve College, known as the "Yale of the West." The fiery John Brown and the Underground Railroad figure prominently in the history of Hudson. Hudson flourished until a series of misfortunes took their toll. Plans for the Clinton Air Line Railroad collapsed, the college relocated to Cleveland, the Fire of 1892 destroyed an entire block of businesses along Main Street, and the only bank in town suddenly closed its doors with people's life savings. Saddened by the deterioration of his hometown, wealthy coal magnate James W. Ellsworth outlined a plan to restore Hudson as a "model town" and put his vast financial resources to work. Hudson rebounded with a new spirit and has since thrived.

Book excerpt: Villains aren't bad people; they are just victims of circumstances. Granted, they are usually the ones to create that circumstance, but that is not the point. Lucius was living the good life. Spending time with his mate as she pranced around in her sexy red hood. Mmmm, he couldn't wait to get a bite of that luscious little cupcake. Nothing was better than tasting her cream filling. Then his mate betrayed him. Next, a dead body turned up, and all fingers were pointing at Lucius for making it that way. A shiny example of life sticking it to him once again. Waking up in jail, accused of killing his biggest rival, Lucius thought his day couldn't get much worse until help was offered from his most hated enemy. Before he knew it, he was accepting help from a witch, the last creature on the planet that he trusted. His whole situation just screams shady. Second chances are a thing of Fairy Tales. Two things Lucius doesn’t believe in, Second Chances and Happily Ever Afters. Now he is being offered both. And all he has to do was avoid screwing up his second chance, and find a murderer all while convincing his mate to fall in love with him again and not keeping his date with the Woodman’s ax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of simple living skills. Not too long ago, handwork skills such as sewing a quilt, crocheting a washcloth, or embroidering a pillowcase were handed down from one generation to the next. Candle- and soap-making, blacksmithing, basket weaving, natural yarn dying, and repurposing were all time-honored traditions that were essential to the farm’s microeconomy and long-term success. While many of these traditional skills have been lost to the convenience of today’s modern economy, they are still alive and thriving among America’s farmers. The FarmMade Essential Skills Book showcases fifty authentic projects from farms all over the country. Hailing from New England, the Deep South, the Midwest, Southwest, and Northwest, each farm-made project represents its region’s unique array of raw materials and end products. Revive valuable lost traditions and pave the way for a more independent, sustainable future with The FarmMade Essential Skills Book.
