Book Synopsis Ruby Taylor: Homesteading Woman by : Margaret Drake
Download or read book Ruby Taylor: Homesteading Woman written by Margaret Drake and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1910, women could not vote. The romance of the western frontier still lured many people to adventure and the quest for wealth in the prairies. Homesteaders were enticed to settle the lands with the goal of civilizing the west. Miss Ruby Taylor, school teacher joined this flood of new settlers to the South Dakota plains. She took her chances in a land lottery. Money was a constant worry for her with her modest teacher's income. Living in the family of one of her students was a challenge as some families resented "boarding the teacher". Women were sought after for wives by the men who made up the majority of the homesteaders. Marriage meant giving up control over a woman's income as well as unavailability of birth-control which meant repeated pregnancies with high infant and mother mortality. When men begin to pursue Ruby, she was forced to consider all these factors. She is absorbed by overcoming the day-by-day barriers and problems in the life of a settler, a rural one-room schoolteacher and in being a single woman in a male dominated frontier. Successfully she fends off unwanted attention until one surprising attack.

Book excerpt: "Of her two granddaughters, Grandma Yvette clearly prefers Ruby Taylor's perfect--and perfectly Jewish--cousin, Sarah. They do everything together, including bake cookies and have secret sleep overs that Ruby isn't invited to. Twelve-year-old Ruby suspects Grandma Yvette doesn't think she's Jewish enough. The Jewish religion is matrilineal, which means it's passed down from mother to child, and unlike Sarah, Ruby's mother isn't Jewish. But when Sarah starts acting out--trading in her skirts and cardigans for ripped jeans and stained t-shirts, getting in trouble at school--Ruby can't help but be somewhat pleased. Then Sarah suddenly takes things too far, and Ruby is convinced Sarah is possessed by a dybbuk, an evil spirit... that Ruby may or may not have accidentally released from Grandma Yvette's basement. Ruby is determined to save her cousin, but a dybbuk can only be expelled by a "pious Jew." If Ruby isn't Jewish enough for her own grandmother, how can she possibly be Jewish enough to fight a dybbuk?"

Book excerpt: Empathetic to a fault, librarian Alice Pepper always had a natural talent for figuring out people and puzzles in the small Oregon town of West Hazel. But as a mystery permeates the quiet Pacific Northwestern community, murder is a challenge she’s not prepared to solve . . . Down-on-her-luck Alice had hoped to retire before turning sixty-five, not struggle to keep her cozy home and dependable job. But even after divorce leaves her golden years a mess, the pieces always come together with a little help from her friends—a fun-loving crew who thrive on jigsaws over coffee, cocktails, and gossip. So, when it’s time to defend close confidant Ruby Milliner, she springs into action. Only, in this case, supporting Ruby means proving she didn’t murder her cheating husband! Ruby never wanted to kill George, although anger can make a person say questionable—and incriminating—things. And scheming, deceitful George made a lot of people angry. A quick investigation reveals the man was blackmailing whoever he could for a quick payday, from his mistress to the most prominent residents in town . . . Alice dives into a secret search to exonerate Ruby, fiercely committed to cracking the crime and patching up torn relationships along the way. Despite using her unassuming persona to fly under the radar, slimming down a massive suspect list and restoring peace to West Hazel is a real gamble. Because if successful, Alice will meet a vengeful killer whose game she doesn’t yet know how to play.

Book Synopsis Sharonville and Its People by : Maria R. Eckhoff
Download or read book Sharonville and Its People written by Maria R. Eckhoff and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the people of Sharonville-the folks we read about in the "neighbors" column of a local paper, our grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great grandparents, the human beings inside the uniforms. Sharonville: And Its People shows how different we are from those that lived here 50, 100, or 150 years ago; and yet, how much we are the same. Since its founding in 1788, the town of Sharonville (originally Sharon) has been called home to generations of people who have built homes and businesses, churches and schools, and a vibrant community that will be called home by the generations to come. The story of these people is told here through over 200 photographs from the collection at the Society for Historic Sharonville. These images show that a town isn't just its buildings and politicians, but a place built by everyday people who all have rich stories to tell.
