Book excerpt: "The exhibition features a selection of forty-one paintings from the 'Golden Age' of the former Southern Netherlands, and covers all the important areas in which the artists from this region excelled: history painting, portraiture, genre painting, still life and landscapes. Some of the works are recent acquisitions; a number have never been exhibited in Paris. Among the principal pieces is Rubens's The Miracles of St. Benedict, an unfinished painting entirely by Rubens's hand and a fine example of his virtuosity. Also in the exhibition is Jacob Jordaens's boisterous The King Drinks and, to remind us that he was not just a painter of boisterous scenes, his imposing Portrait of a Woman. This hangs opposite two portraits by Anthony van Dyck one of which is the great masterpiece Portrait of Father Jean Charles della Faille. Landscapes, genre painting and still life are represented by the painters who did most to ensure their success. Foremost among them are Paul Bril, Lucas van Uden, David Teniers the Younger, Frans De Momper, Jan Fyt and Abraham Brueghel. The exhibition gives due importance, too, to painters who are less well known today but who in their time enjoyed great popularity. Cornelis Schut, Gerard de Lairesse, Jacob van Oost the Elder, Jan Siberechts, Gillis van Tilborch and David Ryckaert all belong in this category. An item of great interest is a canvas by the Brussels born painter Karel Philips Spierinck A bacchanal with two fauns looking at drunken Silenus, with putti cavorting. It is a recent acquisition of the Old Paintings section of the Royal Museums and is one of the first works to show the influence of Nicolas Poussin. This beautiful exhibition at the Musée Marmottan Monet of some of the finest Flemish Baroque painting ensures that a far wider public can enjoy these unique masterpieces from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. Over the years the Royal Museums of Belgium have assembled an exceptional collection of paintings, one of the largest in Europe, from the regions that make up their history. The exhibition is the first in a partnership agreement between the Musée Marmottan Monet and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. The aim is to increase the visibility of their respective collections through temporary exhibitions that highlight a particular aspect of the collection. The next exhibition will be Claude Monet and Japonism in Brussels, then in Paris (2014 and 2015)."--Codart.nl.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crowning Glories integrates Louis XIV's propaganda campaigns, the transmission of Northern art into France, and the rise of empiricism in the eighteenth century - three historical touchstones - to examine what it would have meant for France's elite to experience the arts in France simultaneously with Netherlandish realist painting. In an expansive study of cultural life under the Sun King, Harriet Stone considers the monarchy's elaborate palace decors, the court's official records, and the classical theatre alongside Northern images of daily life in private homes, urban markets, and country fields. Stone argues that Netherlandish art assumes an unobtrusive yet, for the history of ideas, surprisingly dramatic role within the flourishing of the arts, both visual and textual, in France during Louis XIV's reign. Netherlandish realist art represented thinking about knowledge that challenged the monarchy's hold on the French imagination, and its efforts to impose the king's portrait as an ideal and proof of his authority. As objects appreciated for their aesthetic and market value, Northern realist paintings assumed an uncontroversial place in French royal and elite collections. Flemish and Dutch still lifes, genre paintings, and cityscapes, however, were not merely accoutrements of power, acquisitions made by those with influence and money. Crowning Glories reveals how the empirical orientation of Netherlandish realism exposed French court society to a radically different mode of thought, one that would gain full expression in the Encyclop?die of Diderot and d'Alembert.

Book excerpt: Showcasing diverse methodologies, this volume illuminates London's central role in the development of a European art market at the turn of the nineteenth century. In the late 1700s, as the events of the French Revolution roiled France, London displaced Paris as the primary hub of international art sales. Within a few decades, a robust and sophisticated art market flourished in London. London and the Emergence of a European Art Market, 1780–1820 explores the commercial milieu of art sales and collecting at this turning point. In this collection of essays, twenty-two scholars employ methods ranging from traditional art historical and provenance studies to statistical and economic analysis; they provide overviews, case studies, and empirical reevaluations of artists, collectors, patrons, agents and dealers, institutions, sales, and practices. Drawing from pioneering digital resources—notably the Getty Provenance Index—as well as archival materials such as trade directories, correspondence, stock books and inventories, auction catalogs, and exhibition reviews, these scholars identify broad trends, reevaluate previous misunderstandings, and consider overlooked commercial contexts. From individual case studies to econometric overviews, this volume is groundbreaking for its diverse methodological range that illuminates artistic taste and flourishing art commerce at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: Based on Guilliam Forchondt’s surviving business documentation in Antwerp and applying an aggregate and data-driven approach, Connecting Art Markets focuses on the role of art dealers in mediating the supply and demand for art, behaving in particular ways as to influence the markets for artworks in which they were strategically invested. Van Ginhoven presents her findings on Guilliam Forchondt’s workshop production volumes and transatlantic art trade flows, and evaluates the relationship between the production of paintings in the Southern Netherlands, their local, regional and overseas distribution channels, and the markets for these works in Europe and the Americas during the seventeenth century.

Book excerpt: Rembrandt's life and art had an almost mythic resonance in nineteenth-century France with artists, critics, and collectors alike using his artistic persona both as a benchmark and as justification for their own goals. This first in-depth study of the traditional critical reception of Rembrandt reveals the preoccupation with his perceived "authenticity," "naturalism," and "naiveté," demonstrating how the artist became an ancestral figure, a talisman with whom others aligned themselves to increase the value of their own work. And in a concluding chapter, the author looks at the playRembrandt, staged in Paris in 1898, whose production and advertising are a testament to the enduring power of the artist's myth.

Book excerpt: The first major examination of Anthony van Dyck's work as a portraitist and an essential resource on this aspect of his illustrious career This landmark volume is a comprehensive survey of the portrait drawings, paintings, and prints of Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), one of the most celebrated portraitists of all time. His supremely elegant style and ability to convey a sense of a sitter's inner life made him a favored portraitist among high-ranking figures and royalty across Europe, as well as among his fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Showcasing the full range of Van Dyck's fascinating international career with more than 100 works, this catalogue celebrates the artist's versatility, inventiveness, and influential approach to portraiture. Works include preparatory drawings and oil sketches that shed light on Van Dyck's working process, prints that allowed his work to reach a wider audience, and grand painted portraits. Some of the masterpieces are drawn from the exceptional holdings of The Frick Collection, while other works are presented here for the first time. Also included are drawings by some of Van Dyck's contemporaries--including his teacher Peter Paul Rubens--that illuminate the lineage of his working method. With insightful contributions by a team of international scholars, this unparalleled study of Van Dyck offers a compelling case for the distinctiveness and importance of the artist's work.
