Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), has emulated the simplicity of the protocol architecture of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) and is being popularized for VoIP over the Internet because of the ease with which it can be meshed with web services. However, it is difficult to know exactly how many requests for comments (RFCs) have been published over the last two decades in regards to SIP or how those RFCs are interrelated. Handbook on Session Initiation Protocol: Networked Multimedia Communications for IP Telephony solves that problem. It is the first book to put together all SIP-related RFCs, with their mandatory and optional texts, in a chronological and systematic way so that it can be used as a single super-SIP RFC with an almost one-to-one integrity from beginning to end, allowing you to see the big picture of SIP for the basic SIP functionalities. It is a book that network designers, software developers, product manufacturers, implementers, interoperability testers, professionals, professors, and researchers will find to be very useful. The text of each RFC from the IETF has been reviewed by all members of a given working group made up of world-renowned experts, and a rough consensus made on which parts of the drafts need to be mandatory and optional, including whether an RFC needs to be Standards Track, Informational, or Experimental. Texts, ABNF syntaxes, figures, tables, and references are included in their original form. All RFCs, along with their authors, are provided as references. The book is organized into twenty chapters based on the major functionalities, features, and capabilities of SIP.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 12th SDL Forum, Grimstad, Norway. The SDL Forum was ?rst held in 1982, and then every two years from 1985. Initially the Forum was concerned only with the Speci?cation and Description Language that was ?rst standardized in the 1976 Orange Book of the Inter- tional Telecommunication Union (ITU). Since then, many developments took place and the language has undergone several changes. However, the main underlying paradigm has survived, and it is the reason for the success of the Speci?cation and Description Language in many projects. This paradigm is based on the following important principles of distributed - plications: Communication: large systems tend to be described using smaller parts that communicate with each other; State: the systems are described on the basis of an explicit notion of state; State change: the behavior of the system is described in terms of (local) changes of the state. The original language is not the only representative for this kind of paradigm, so the scope of the SDL Forum was extended quite soon after the ?rst few events to also include other ITU standardized languages of the same family, such as MSC, ASN.1 and TTCN. This led to the current scope of System Design Languages coveringallstagesofthedevelopmentprocessincludinginparticularSDL,MSC, UML, ASN.1, eODL, TTCN, and URN. The focus is clearly on the advantages to users, and how to get from these languages the same advantage given by the ITU Speci?cation and Description Language: code generation from high-level speci?cations.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to implementing QoS in IP/MPLS networks using Cisco IOS and Cisco IOS XR Software Understand IP QoS architectures and how they apply to MPLS Take a detailed look at traffic management using policing, shaping, scheduling, and active queue management Study Cisco QoS behavioral model and the modular QoS command-line interface (MQC) Learn the operation of MPLS TE with its DiffServ extensions and applicability as a traffic-protection alternative Find multiple configuration and verification examples illustrating the implementation of MPLS TE, DS-TE, and FRR Review the different designs, ranging from a best-effort backbone to the most elaborate scenarios combining DiffServ, DS-TE, and FRR Quality of service (QoS) plays a key role in the implementation of IP and MPLS networks today. However, QoS can be one of the most complex aspects of networking. The industry efforts to achieve convergence have generated a need for increased levels of traffic differentiation. Today’s networks need to meet an array of QoS requirements to support distinct applications (such as voice, video, and data) and multiple network services (such as IP, Ethernet, and ATM) on a single converged, multiservice network. QoS has therefore has become an integral part of network design, implementation, and operation. QoS for IP/MPLS Networks is a practical guide that will help you facilitate the design, deployment, and operation of QoS using Cisco® IOS® Software and Cisco IOS XR Software. The book provides a thorough explanation of the technology behind MPLS QoS and related technologies, including the different design options you can use to build an MPLS network with strict performance requirements. This book discusses MPLS Traffic Engineering (MPLS TE) as a tool to complement MPLS QoS and enhance the performance characteristics of the network. You’ll learn technology, configuration, and operational details, including the essentials facts about the behavior and configuration of the rich MPLS QoS and related MPLS TE functionality. To get the most out of this book, you should have a basic understanding of both IP and MPLS, including the basics of IP addressing and routing and the basics of MPLS forwarding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile communications users are demanding increased reliability, functionality, and accessibility; they want "always on" access to voice, e-mail, text, and multimedia services as they roam from home to auto to office to outdoor/indoor locations. In addition, there is an increasing deamnd to replace separate landline/mobile telephones with a single handset that can be used wherever its owner might be. Answering those customer needs, fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) marries the mobility provided by cellular networks with the extended connectivity provided by 802.11-based WiFi services and integrates them with landline networks using a single handset. This book provides the theoretical and practical background necessary to successfully plan, develop, and deploy effective FMC networks. This book discusses the various 802.11 and VoIP protocols used in FMC networks, open and proprietary communications protocols, integration of FMC networks to wired telephone networks, mobilizing applications such as text messaging and video, security issues, mobile handset requirements for FMC networks, and the administration/management of FMC networks. Special attention is given to selecting appropriate components for FMC, and numerous case histories and examples from the author's experience are provided. This book is an essential tutorial and reference for any RF/wireless, communications, and networking professional who will work with the next generation of wireless networks. Describes how to develop, deploy, and manage networks that seamlessly combine landline, cellular, and WiFi networks into one converged communications network Thorough coverage of various 802.11 and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) standards and how they impact integration with cellular networks Discusses security considerations and how to successfully manage converged networks Includes numerous case histories and examples from the author's experience---this is not a purely theoretical treatment of the subject!
